Hand Printed Fabric

I printed more fabric and this time I used my old roller stamps (tutorial for roller stamps) to make the marks.
It was on plain white cotton and coloured with liquitex inks mixed with fabric medium. I rinsed them out and the colours stayed in but the fabric is very stiff.
On the yellow sample piece one end is motley, this is because I tried something else at that end for the background colour (Adirondack colour wash) [which I sprayed on last] but it came out really orangey which I didn't like so I tried rinsing it out.

I started embroidery stitching on the blue fabric, but I'm not sure how much I will do as it's so stiff and makes my fingers sore.

Turquoise

Three Muses challenge - turquoise.
I like the colour turquoise.
The background was created digitally and the swirling pattern was paint - I made a stamp from wallpaper.

Hand Embroidered Painted Fabric

The fabric [butter muslin] started as a wrapping cloth for steaming digitally printed fabrics so it had some colour and stains on it. I then used a handmade rolling stamp to add more colour and painted it when it was dry. I've used running stitches, French knots, bullions and some other embroidery stitches for decoration. Click on the image for a better look. I'm wondering what to do with it now - a book cover maybe?

Rolling Stamp 84, Fabric and Paper

My arty friends and myself set ourselves challenges and one for this month is to use/do something with a tube. I haven't made a rolling stamp for a while so I thought I would do a new one. I used it on the background paper above and on the fabric below. The fabric was used originally as a pressing cloth when I used to steam digitally printed fabrics and it had some marks on it. I have been adding paint splodges on purpose to try and make it more interesting and I used the new rolling stamp on it in two different colours. I've started to quilt and stitch on it since taking the photo and I will show you the progress in a few days. Click on the images to enlarge. There is a picture of the rolling stamp below and the marks it makes.

Animal Collages and Rolling Stamps 76-82

Three collages above - watercolour backgrounds and wax crayon, found images, some altered.
It has been a while since I posted any rolling stamp ideas, but now Cloth, Paper Scissors have released a free eBook download
called "The Workshop: Roll Out the Backgrounds" and you get four articles about art stamps and stamp carving which includes my article on the rolling stamps.
Some ideas for you to try

Rolling Stamps [72-75], Sketchbook Pages

The green marks above were made with a rolling stamp [no 83], which I then outlined in pen and colured the rest of the page with brush pens.
I've posted a couple of pages from book 15 but this is the first page.

Rolling stamps 72 to 75
The first two are from different parts of the same wallpaper

The bottom two are parts of the same wallpaper too, but the top roller is made from two torn areas of wallpaper.

Flowers in a Jug, Rolling Stamps 62-67

The top three rolling stamps are made from wine bottle stoppers - corks or plastic
The cork one directly below has not been carved, it is shaped, so I used it as it is.

The three below have been cut from fun foam and stuck on rollers
For a free download to see how to make rolling stamps such as these click here.
[Printing Technique number 4] They were featured in Cloth, Paper Scissors magazine.

Childhood and Rolling Stamps 62-64

Take a Word - the challenge this week is 'childhood'.
I've used a vintage photo from my stash and a poem by Robert Louis Stevenson. The background is one of my games creations which were originally designed to be printed on fabric with a digital printer.

Three more rolling stamps, all made with fun foam. Cloth, Paper Scissors are offering a free download of the article I wrote them about rolling stamps which you can get here

Lollypop, and Flower Doodles & Rolling Stamps

This doodle reminds me of the big lollypops on sticks that you see at the seaside.

Rolling Stamps 56, 57, 58

The top one is made from textured wallpaper stuck around a card roller. Use recycle containers such as you would find inside foil, cling film, granules etc. As you can see the top one was just a section of paper ripped off, so not a repeat pattern. You can see where the repeat starts on the one below. This one is made from fabric and has holes cut out.

I used offcuts of fun foam for this roller. If you don't have sticky foam use double sided sticky tape or glue. A strong glue is probably best if you want to reuse the roller over and over again.
