Sewing and Quilting
Table Runner and Placemats

I've been making some table mats and a runner out of my own fabric designs which I had printed at Spoonflower. I wanted to incorporate some hand stitched English Paper Piecing [EPP] into it too. The eight mats are all different.

On the first mat I stitched the stripes and the English Paper piecing quilting by hand. I used the machine for the curved join and the end of the EPP. I was really disappointed with it, I thought it was way too busy. The fabrics are busy on their own but altogether....!

I didn't use as many stripes on the next mat but I had already cut them out so I wanted to use them.

No stripes.

The EPP was difficult to deal with so I started just putting it in the middle.

The EPP was very difficult to stitch together by hand because the fabric is quite thick and very stiff. I should have washed it before I started but didn't and I don't know if it would have made any difference.

The runner in sections below - I'd got really fed up with stitching the EPP so I only did odd ones.

The fabrics used, there are seven. I did have another which I was going to use for binding but I didn't have enough and I didn't like it much so I've not bound them at all. These are the original swatches but I used a fat quarter of each fabric for 8 plate mats and table runner. They are colour coordinated, I used the same colours on each fabric design.
This swatch looks a bit washed out and thinner compared to what I used, this fabric would have been easier to sew by hand too.

Watercolours, Digital Art, Quilt, Hippo

Digital image created on my android tablet.
My granddaughter liked playing with it.

My daughter-in-law is expecting a baby so I made a hippo. I'm afraid my crocheting is not very neat although I think the yarn was a bit thinner than the one recommended so that may not have helped.

I've also made a floor quilt/play mat out of some Spoonflower swatches

Day 7 Modern -
I decided to do another key but the modern kind that you don't have to stick in the lock or ignition of a car.

Baby Quilt

I have an announcement, my daughter gave birth to a daughter the other day, my first Granddaughter.

I made a baby quilt but chose an easier way this time and bought a printed panel, so no applique or anything like that. The panel is called 'Counting Sheep'.

I've decided that I don't really like quilting so it may be the last one I do....until next time.

English Paper Piecing Cushion

As you can see I have finished the paper pieced cushion. It was made up of three shapes - decagons [10 sides], polygons [5 sides] and elongated hexagons [6 sides]. My intention was to be very neat and not show any of the stitches [the shapes were all hand stitched together], but I'm afraid I didn't succeed. I tried a few different ways of stitching them together [tutorials can be found on Pinterest] .I'm not sure if I have a favourite technique, I think it all depended on the access to a particular bit, for instance it is much easier to sew two small shapes together than when there are large pieces to join.

It was made from a pack of 5" charming squares which determined the size of the cushion.
The fabric is called "Enchanted Forest" by Lewis and Irene. I bought a fat quarter the same as some of the squares and made an envelope type cushion [hate putting zips in]. There were a few blue scraps left so I edged the overlap, which made it slightly bigger which was better.

WIP - English Paper Piecing

A few weeks ago I started a new project, English paper piecing. I'm using pentagons [5 sided shape], decagons [10 sided shape] and elongated hexagons[6 sided shape]. I was doing really well to start with but I seem to be in a slump at the moment probably because we've had some good weather and  I was doing other things.

Quilting/Patchwork Fabric Book

I wanted to make something with some of my quilting and patchwork samples but as they are all so different I didn't think they would go together. I made another book instead and it's not the best book I've ever made but it keeps the samples together. There are a few samples that I didn't use so I may make something with those one day.
The Q and P were cut from a hand quilted sample which had been painted.
Top - Somerset patchwork.
Bottom - Court House Steps [thanks Queeniepatch for reminding me what it is called]
I think I did this one for a cushion originally, but ....
Top - Applique on log cabin patchwork [plus an extra thread which I didn't notice when I took the photo]
Bottom - English paper piecing, hand stitched [it must be old, the stitches are tiny lol]
Top - Log cabin patchwork
Triangle - Embroidered, slashed, layered, stuffed, frayed
Crazy patchwork
Suffolk puffs with dyed fabrics, beaded, string
Shadow quilting
Log Cabin patchwork
Top - Italian quilting or Corded quilting
Bottom - Trapunto or stuffed quilting [painted]
Hand quilting
Top left - Patchwork
Top right - painted or stamped flower, hand stitched
Bottom - layered, machine stitched
Art Quilt - texture paint, paint, hand stitching, machine stitching

I thought I had used all my old embroidery samples in fabric books but I found some more today so there may be another book one day.
