Stencils and Modelling Paste

A while back I bought some second hand wooden wall  plaques. I painted them and put them aside. This week I dragged one out to use for this project .  You could use the Altered Pages Slat Sign . I decided to go crazy and make a fabulous mixed media piece. I am happy with the end results.  I began by making  modelling paste. It was made with equal parts glue and paint (color does not matter - I used grey acrylic) and then mix in talcum powder until it has the consistency of modelling paste.  I used two stencils with the modelling paste to create patterns and rough texture on the plaque, let the paste dry overnight (or longer depending on where you live). I arranged and glued die cut gears , bead trims, gems, keys and clock face. Then painted with black acrylic paint. Three coats were necessary to get good coverage. When dry I painted with metallic  paints , letting it dry between coats of paint and ...

Just Begin!

We've all learned to appreciate a job well done, but before that can happen you have to get a good start!   This is true whether it's a job or a hobby.  You might be amazing at something, but you won't know until you begin.   Today's project started with a monoprint on my gel plate.  I like to collect interesting patterned items to use with my prints.  The shapes in this print are from an empty adding machine tape roll and the wheel from an empty tape runner. My print was made on a scrap of blue card stock with blues, greens and red paint.  We're all about red this month so I sponged in some red ink on the page and left some random areas untouched so that the other colors would pop out. The addition of the permanent ink really altered the paint colors.  I added a little darker red around the edges after the paper was trimmed to size, in this case it's an A6 card panel.  I also dipped the edges into the dark ink so the blue paper...

Mixed Media Necklace

Happy February Everyone!  This month we are celebrating the color Red and how powerful a color it is...I mean it is the color of L.O.V.E, right? Pretty powerful.  So, check back with us all month long and see what we come up with using red in our works.  I have for you a mixed media Steampunk inspired necklace featuring reds and pinks.   There is a supply list below directing you to everything you need to make one of your own, with variations as well.  I began with a DIY bezel style pendant.  I was so excited to begin that I forgot to snap a before pic of the blank bezel.  You can see what they look like  here.   Next, a collage image was added using  PPA Glue. You can see it is still a little milky white as this was just after applying the wet PPA glue.  I allowed mine to dry overnight, but it was almost totally dry in a couple hours.  I then colorized a chipboard gear with acrylic paint then added a...

Art Deco Journal Page

I was so excited to hear that Altered Pages and Lost Coast Designs are partnering this month.  They have fabulous stamps!!! This is my finished journal page using the fabulous Lost Coast Designs stamp 'Art Deco Face'.  I could not be happier with the results of my page!   Products used : Journal book   Lost Coast Designs  stamp Recycled white tissue paper  Coloured  inks or  markers White pen (from my stash )  black pen   Scraps of recycled wallpaper and paper Copper paint   Steampunk gears Tacky glue   Glue stick   Begin by stamping the gorgeous image of the 'Art Deco Face' on to white tissue paper, it stamped perfectly first time.   You can see the fine detail of the image on the tissue.   Let the ink dry on the tissue before adhering to the page. Then colour the background on the journal page using inks and pens.  This could also be do...

Victoriana Box (with a touch of steampunk)

Well, here is my first post as a new Design Team member at Alteredpages.com. I hope you enjoy this altered box project. Supplies: Matte Medium Ephemera pack Dew Drops - getaway Collage sheet   - Sepia Collage Scrapbook papers Fabric and paper flowers random box from my stash random other bits and pieces, metal gears , etc., from my stash Stickles Ribbon Gelatos Crackle glaze Ink pads After I had found a small box that I wanted to alter, I removed the cross bracing from it. Then I cut possible images from my collage sheet. I like to play around with composition so I cut out a few different ones. I never know for sure what I will end up using. In this picture you can see the cross bracing that was inside originally. At this point, I went through my paper stash and found some great leathery textured paper to use on the inside of the box. Use  matte medium to adhere the paper to the box. I also like to use the matt medium on top of the paper for...

Fly With Steam Mixed Media Canvas

Hi everyone!  Barbara here today with a fluttery-steampunk-style mixed media canvas using  Altered Pages  products and our those from our partner,  Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts ! First, I grabbed a 6"x9"  Canvas Panel Board  and gave it a light coat of  Liquitex Gesso  before I added a bit of molding paste through a stencil.  Then I laid out my Gypsy Soul Laser Cuts chipboard pieces to see how they will look.  I always give my chipboard a light coat of gesso before adding color.  In this case, I used the  Chalk Paints  in Brown, Romance, and Heritage.  I used a sponge or  Ranger Blending Tool  to pick up the colors and dab them onto the chipboard.  I find this works better than a brush because it does not fill in any of the small openings in the laser cuts. I was going for a rusty look, and I even added some brown to the  Pen Nibs  to make them look old.  Set these aside to dry...
