μέν, ἀτάρ: cf. Rep. ii. 367 e ἀεὶ μὲν δὴ τ̀ὴν φύσιν τοῦ τε Γλαύκωνος καὶ τοῦ Ἀδειμάντου ἠγάμην, ἀτὰρ οὖν καὶ τότε πάνυ γε ἥσθην, Xen. Hell. v. 4. 17. —

φιλοσοφίαν: here, as freq., desire for knowledge, intellectual aspiration; cf. Rep. ii. 376 b τό γε φιλομαθὲς καὶ φιλόσοφον ταὐτόν; Lys. 213 d ἐκείνου ἡσθεὶς τῇ φιλοσοφίᾳ.
