ἀδύνατος: with acc., cf. Meno 94 b ἵνα δὲ μὴ ὀλίγους οἴῃ καὶ τοὺς φαυλοτάτους Ἀθηναίων ἀδυνάτους γεγονέναι τοῦτο τὸ πρᾶγμα. —
ἵνα ἐγίγνετο: for secondary tense of indic. in a final clause, expressing a purpose which cannot be fulfilled, see G. 216, 3; H. 884.
συνουσία: conversation; cf. 338c.
ἀποτείνοντι: see on 329 a.
ἐπεὶ κτἑ.: for, if I had time, I should be glad to listen to this also (ταῦτα equiv. to τοὺς μακροὺς λόγους). Socrates in Plato is never at a loss to cover his meaning, — in this case, aversion to the long discourses of the sophists, — in terms of expression which are courteous yet perfectly transparent.
