Sinister Underland of the East

Inspired by
http://udan-adan.blogspot.com.au/2017/01/once-more-unto-morlocks-20-lost.html
This is a classic post and I will use these ideas

These would fit right in my Underland Setting or slip in the decent to the depths modules or underdark settings when players fall down a extra deep hole or get lost.

Im reminded of some American Indian Myths of a subterranean period of human life which probably inspired HPL's cavern dwelling races. Marvel comics has lots of warring subterranean civilizations. I had 7 lost underground cities in one of my settings and seven secret underworld civilizations. Agents of Atlas has a good secret underworld empire too.

In My current setting I also have this:I put this secretly controlled kingdom nth of Yoon Suin and it is like warring kingdom china (or the Dragon Kingdoms in Kara Tur)

Dòngxué chéngbǎo - The Cavern Citadel
A ancient eastern dynasty who built a great underground refuge and were driven into it aeons ago during dynastic struggles. The secret royal dynasty began growing addictive Black Lotus in hidden mountain valleys and used it to subvert and enslave the surface peoples, spreading a world wide drug based crime syndicate. The Royal Dynasty by occult means have become very long lived and the royal divine cult has many sects including monks, assassins, thieves, warriors and magicians. The ever living ones who make up the select of the emperor plot and scheme to become ruler. The current emprees has rulled a thousand years and has never been seen by outsiders. Those who are most dangerous are sent to the outside world to direct the empires secret empire of drugs, slavery and vice. If their service is worthy they are invited to return to the secret pleasure gardens of the hidden court if they renounce their ambition. Each empire or major land mass has such a perfect one in exile seeking to return to the subterranean paradise.

The original cavern sanctuary has expanded and has hundreds of miles of tunnels and enclaves which influence different kingdoms. Some go into the mountains, others connect to other strange kingdoms even beneath the oceans and beyond.

The crumbling Dragon Empire has broken into multiple kingdoms at the will of the Unseen Empress. The great dragon Kingdom covers the great river delta and the original empire capitol (riddled with secret buildings of the Black Lotus Cult). Two smaller empires battle their progenitor and a cluster of tiny kingdoms the thousand kingdoms against the lower edge of mountains to the south. Beyond the mountains is Yoon Suin.

Raging barbarians press against the easter edge of the three fragments of the the old empire. The three empires hate each other but stop fighting and unite vs the great khans of the wastes. The Northern empire has become steadily influenced by the barbarians culture.

The south empire has revived rituals and cults of the pre impirial bronze age dynasties and many worship spirits and monsters.

In the middle the great Dragon Empire pretends nothing has changed and assumes the lesser empires will return to the fold one day. They worship a sleepy overweight prophet who sits blissfully in a drug coma.

The Hidden Empire beneath divides the empires to make control easier and variants in imperial culture produce different luxury goods and artforms the Secret Empress desires.

The rulers of the Dragon Empires claim to be dragon descendants. Some say the true dragon born are the perfect immortals of the hidden empire beneath. According the this theory the surface empires are dupes, deluding themselves and their people.

Black Lotus is used on every continent by the rich in secret. In the western desert floodplain empires Blue lotus is more popular and acceptable. Lotus drugs are for the rich mostly but tea is enjoyed by commoners of many lands. The best tea though is quite narcotic and expensive also but rare outside the east. Elves love tea and dark elves love black lotus especially. The dark elves of the deeps help carry Black Lotus across the world, beyond the sight of shipping officials and common folk. In Shadelport a sorcerer Zorg the Great serves the Barron and controls the drug trade after a bitter battle with the hidden empire. Now the Barron's pirate fleet helps carry the drugs on the surface and into the southern continent kingdoms.

The lands of Yoon Suin produce their own drugs and tea and the Hidden empire is less interested in infiltration and manipulation of these lands. The Hidden Empress and her elite despise slug men and their elites cannot bare to even look at them.

d100 Poems and why your bards are lame

A friend has been using my shadelport theatre tables for a dwarf theatre fan in his dnd game and i was reminded of fun i had with these. Poems are handy for bard performances, to find on scrolls or possible quest subjects or clues.

Poems can be competitive and performers might battle in a genre or extolling useful virtues of a date palm vs a coconut palm. Contests might be in courts or public as entertainment or serious duels with high stakes. Bards in play should battle bards or compose a new popular poem that people want to hear (or steal or copy). Performing from memory a famous poem might be a challenge too.
Each poet might recite a stanza. Boasting is popular with some contests, insults are common too. Some contests take turns to compose a original verse with turns to improvise a stanza. A subject might be given by a judge.

Arabic poets have many fomal battle modes - this was a good bit:
al-Nābighah al-Dhubyāni (ca. 535–ca. 604), one of the great court poets of Arabic literature, served as the first judge, and where the seventh-century female poet al-Kansā gained fame for her elegies for her brothers, who had died in battle, and dueled with the likes of Hind Bint ‘Atabah and Hassān Ibn Thābit. When al-Nābighah suggested that she was the best of poets with a uterus, she responded “and of those with testicles as well!”

Anytime great bards or poets meet people will expect a contest. Some will be bitter and shame the loser some will elevate both or produce a collaborative work. Great battles might be the subject of worked by later bards.

Contests light be judged by most important person, most attractive lady, oldest man, greatest scholar, a priest or the mob. If you offend a great poet or cheat them look out, they are vindictive and might curse or lampoon someone who wrongs them.

Occasionaly a ruler encourages poets and attracts art and culture. Whith more bards schools start and battles become commonplace.

I might make a separate bard and elf spell list one day.

These might also be subjects of artworks canvas, vases, metalwork or prints. Most frequently they are scrolls or books and quite valuable.

Spell Componants and Magic Revisions

Component types
These are the basic elements of spell casting any spell. All spells also require the mind of the magician to concentrate to then use the components. Some magicians learn proficiency to not require a specific component, eliminating all and just use their mind. Componants are more about fun of magicians showing off their props more in play and for use in descriptions. Even a chance to be creative on the fly.

Components mostly are prepared and ready to cast. Visual and audio components happen after the spell is released.

Ritual
Requires at least ten minite ritual and can last days, used to enchant and make long lasting magic. Some do specific strange things but summoning and enchanting and divination requires it. Combat magic does not use rituals and can be cast in one round.

Gesture
Requires ablility to move hands and body or dance and make expressions

Spoken
Requires ability to speak, chant, ryme, talk backwards, pun, sing or call apon a great power

Visual
Spell is visible in effect often creating light and beams of power, auroras tend to come from the caster to the target. Abjure visual makes spells invisible to non magic eyes

Audio
Spell makes noise that is distinctive. Abjure Audio makes spells silent

Time
Combat spell takes either a few moments like a weapon attack but go off in the casters initiative in the magic phase. If struck in this time caster requires a concentration save with INT or INT. A non combat spell usually takes a whole round and effects happen last in the round and into subsequent rounds if spell has duration. You can learn quick draw spell proficiency for a single spell at a time. Abjure Time proficiency puts your action before spell phase unless other casters also have this ability. Rituals require ten minutes minimum. It lets you cast one round spell in normal combat magic phase.

Material
Foci -
Consumables -
Requires some item specific to that type of magician. Specific spells may demand specific things. Some require token goods that are consumed in casting or sacrificed like a drop of holy water or come rat whiskers or holy herbs. Some require a foci object like a staff or a holy symbol or a druid sickle. When being subtle or non threatening a priest will use expendable componant idf they dont wish to show of their foci. Prices get higher with level. Stripping casters of materials can limit them but a good magician can improvise with alternate materials.  Materials often kept pre packed in small bags and guild sell them. There are many skill proficiency that can be used to limit material shortages. Some sympathy between the target and the powers called upon are evoked in the material. Link like a legend, material, colour, doll or even just rhyming on linguistic word games could be associated in a spell. Quickdraw Foci could be a handy proficiency too. Necromancers and others use living sacrifice for spell materials.

Magician Types
Any who can cast a spell is a magician

Spells come in several distinctive lists

Spell lists
Arcane used by Wizards and Sorcerers
Divine used by Priests
Nature used by Druids
Mentalist used by exotic types

Bards and spell casting races can choose any one type of magician style for casting and spell list, but have own spell progression which is slightly worse than the specialists.

Im thinking of creating elven sub race spell lists and bard school lists (one generic list to start - pyrobards later). These could steal spells from various lists into new single specific one. Also explain elves cultural links to each spell list. Possibly choosing a elf spell list defines your breed. Lotsa interesting consequences of this.

Casting Styles
These styles dictate how a caster regains spell use, what they start with and how they gain new spells when advancing levels. Some classes can pick a difference spell list and pick a diferent casting style. Druid spell list but use sorcery style casting. Elf sub types for example.

Wizards pre learn spells from 8 hours rest and spellbook study
start with 4 zero level cantrips and 4 zero level spells in their book with room for 4 more
get two spells to choose from per level from common Arcane list

Divine pre learn spells through 8 hours deep prayer
can choose any spells from common lists

Sorcery can expend spell energy points to cast any spell they know after 8 hours trance
start with 4 zero and two first level spells you know
get one new spel known per level
every second level they can swap a known spell for a new one

This opens up a bunch of weirdness for my magic classes
Will play with elf and bard spell list with a psychon version
Basically planning to rewrite and simplify some stuff
A big a3 spread skill list will help with separate descriptions
The character class spreads i did with spells and level benefits helped lots
Then rebuild character classes with example sub types so new players can jump in much faster
I wrote my original rules when sick over weeks and don't see me getting time like that again
3 hour bus rides twice a week is cool though for writing

d100 Dungeon Prep School Encounters

I used last article mystery table for major party for a term, with one of these rolls for each player. Also see my d100 Magic School encounters and d100 secret doors could be handy. I used my articles on urns and barrels and boxes tables handy too for crap in school and stuffed in wardrobes, attic cells and other places about the school.

In my game school is co-ed with no differences made but rival schools could be interesting and some could be same sex or for one character class only. University in city handy also. There are secret and illegal schools also which is a good place for school rivals to go and be seen later using evil teachings. Partied from same school tend to be polite and gentlemanly resolving arguments with a duel or chess game or a small fee. Lots of murder hobos, monsters and other folk dislike anyone with a fancy school background. Students in the city should wear school robes and avoid conflict. City guard favours students in uniform over street scum thankfully. If the school has to collect you from the drunk prison or secret police cells students will be fined and given punishment.

City militia code has legit students special privileged status but police are allowed to castrate male students caught in public coitus, a tradition hundreds of years old. They in most cases lock up student and call the school.

Students are expected to defend school property and interests and should defend other students and staff in public. Abandoning a student to a rival school, gang or cult is the most shameful error. Students are taught to call for the militia and not be afraid of the secret police. There was a time though when a student asked police orcs for help and they killed the rival school students dead and everyone blamed the student for many years.

If students are expelled it is a big deal and shameful. Many end up bandits and murder hobos. Failure is considered respectable as is dying in school. Failures often get administrative jobs in the city or enter officer training for the military. Many even sit the secret police exam with favoured ones being awarded with bridging programs to enter secret police school immediate.

Students are invited to participate in the dungeon sport labyrinth under the city which attract adventurers from all over the world. The dungeon is maintained by an army of professional monsters and trappers and events are monitored by scrying relics and spell users. Some witness the games via illusions made by magicians but the most common see puppet show versions on the streets. Only the richest really see what happens and the survivors are usually offered jobs including with the Barron. Some become gladiators or murder hobos. A few school teams have been wiped out.

Graduates are monitored by the school and occasional by the secret police if tagged by the school as dangerous.

Former students 4-5th level may stay on as tutors if they get o well with staff. 6-7 may get positions as part time teachers with 8th level benig accepted as master teaching staff. Any literate ex student can possibly get admin, scribe or assistant duties. Occasional a teacher leaves and takes several students with them as followers.

Tables for Dungeoneer Prep School

I saw this when landed at Adelaide Airport
So while on plane over here I wrote up school and mapped it and wrote some tables to fill in between adventurers. The point of this was that zero and first level adventurers could use school as a base early on, recruit extra help and even get emergency aid quickly. I figure they will graduate about third level if they dont run away and become unqualified murder hobos.

Players happy to just ask in local pubs for adventure now. A bit wary of Shadelport city which is sensible.

Player reminded me that witch familiar not killed and hey shopped her to bits and dumped them in different locations the witch house moved to.

Hmmm d100 cheap possibly cursed city houses might be needed...

Also will do a d100 small cult table also many with junior versions. Junior versions under different names might hide dark secrets or might engage youth in anti social acts. A small able for some youth ones included here.

Characters at first level recruit and hire other students as followers. Could try and get a professor interested in your research so they help with further discoveries or pay them to fireball someone for you or to identify relics. When leave school may (3rd level max), adventurers who remain respectable may invoke the school name and possibly gain the school and masters as contacts, possibly getting employed as guest speakers, demonstrators or tutors.

Hillfast School
A Preparatory school for professional Adventurers (no murder hobos allowed!)

Characters
Roll up 4 zero level heroes, each is 16 and each character can speak their native language

To create characters roll 3d6 for each stat but get to arrange them in order of choice.

INT bonus gives a bonus number of slots points that can be allocated as pleased among the three types of skills: WP weapon proficiencies, NWP non weapon proficiencies and languages. Characters could use to gain writing before attending school starts which could be handy or get a weapon that your character class does not normally teach.

So next pick a career background from Fighting to a Skilled Career Background. Roll your HP (You will get to re-roll them when you turn first level). Then pick a background type and pick from the recommended  WP, NWP and Languages. Finally give the student some tools, weapons, armour and other stuff they receive from their families or found in a ditch and.

Then the students are ready. Various incidents encounters are rolled per character every term. As  secrets of the school get discovered by the meddling kids some will die. Entry into the tunnels should be enough to get them turn first level. After they turn first level they can quit but most graduate during third level with honours. The school monitors all students after graduation and if any are embarrassing murder hobos they put their names on a kill list. The characters have been funded by a mysterious benefactor. Fees are 120gp a term and most students receive a d4gp per term for books and beer.

About the School
Founded 30 years ago by a public company with permission to operate a charity. Rich sponsors built the school to train the adventurers of tomorrow who would apply modern methods of exploiting dungeons. This was in response to the increasing appearance of dastardly murder hobos who would drive the humanoid tribes to constant warfare by exterminating their family stronghold dungeons. Many new villages have been spreading in recent years and chance for a better life in a quiet village has become a viable dream.

Modern gentleman adventurers bring a large group of followers into the fray and will even sell real state on top of the dungeon and use the builders to seal every entrance then strip mine te complex. Pumping smoke into a sealed complex so underworld horrors flee one exit into a gauntlet of caltrop filled trenches and archers. Poison monster baits are popular too. Even these modern dungeoneers can make good use of a scouting party. Murder hobos on the rise have caused unrest with the humanoid populations and made the wilderness more dangerous. Concerned guilds and substantial support from the Barron's Secret police established the school committee. Once established it was quickly seized from public committee and now ran as a asset by the state.

The hope of increasing adventurers of the more responsible kind had some successes. The school produces 3-6 adventurer parties every year with fairly good success rate.

The school is a cheap refurnished mansion built on a ruined monastery of murdered summoner warlocks. The school has had some problems with hauntings and several masters have been accused of actually being monsters.

The House is a three story mansion with two wings. The gardens include a house cottage garden where much of the fresh food is grown. The gardens have turkeys, geese and peacocks roaming the grounds. The garden also grows many magical and medicinal herbs. The midden heap is a trashheap that covers several prehistoric barrows possibly from the age of necromancy. A graveyard has over a hundred and twenty marked plots and possibly more. It includes 14 crypts several predating the school and a spiked iron and stone wall around the outside. The entry also has a multi faith burial plot. Their is a small orchard of apples forbidden to students. The teachers use it for cider. A great fir tree and oak tree (rich in mistletoe) with a game field in front is a popular feature for stickball and lawn darts and other youth sports.

The ground floor is mostly the great assembly hall, common dining hall, a study hall and the first year dorm of over a hundred. The first floor also has the admin. The second floor is where the sixty odd second year students have semi private stalls (the hutches). Also school tutors and admin live on the second. The third floor is where the library, labs and masters live. The twenty third hear students get private rooms. There are three compartmented attics many sealed for a few decades with weird stuff brought back from dungeons and failed experiments. The basement has three levels with the upper one used most especially as a gym or meditation room. Lower one for storage and a boiler room with bottom one off limits to students. Lots of secret doors about school many left as tests intended for students to find in study notes.

City university snubs the school but the cities fighting men and those investing in exploration hold the school in high regard.

My Longstairs DnD PDF for 300th Post

Longstairs Master View or Upload here

A year ago i got into blogging, got into longstairs and first conceived of sandbox dungeon zone tables. So here is a revised version of my first lot of blogs. RPG net forum still going but mine increasingly mutated from original thread. I will run at a con next year.

If you dont know longstairs is modern special forces versus a semi sentient hostile dungeon dimension in a thread on RPG net. My sidebar has links to original articles i did with links to own wiki and longstair. Like any good forum some ppl got snarky and so I went my own way. Australia was portrayed as a hippie wonderland without much effort in looking at its indigenous beliefs and nuclear tests on their land. Stargate vs DnD a good simple description.

Dungeon zones have been expanded since then with my redbrick and Gothic zones being over a hundred pages each. Goblin mines will be next one to develop.

When I do final Psychon v3 book will include stuff for space opera and post apocalypse and modern vs dungeon stuff all in a glorious weird science fantasy source book.

This is some of my collage art too.

Tonights theatres of Exile Island Guide

The media on the island is represented by the arts and crafts and music and written word. Artists often employ in name of lords, church or cities and increasingly saying what they think on other issues. Shadel Port celebrates free speech more than any land and is crawling with anarchists, pirates, freemen, escaped slaves, ex convicts and worst of all yeomen.

Yeomen own their land, produce the bulk and best of the cities food and the Barron protects them with death sentence to any who harm or rob or wrong them. They also ignore the church mostly following nature, farming and war. They specialise in longbow and greatsword and are mostly fighters. They are private and keep their own council.

Bards are common and different schools employ various agencies on the island. Some bards follow the highland tribe way, skalds from the vikings are common, elf friends (good and evil elves), empire, shadelport and many minor schools. Acting as spies, informants, messengers and entertainers they are the fastest means of information flow without magic. Everyone knows what bards are up to but everybody wants them in their towns and courts.

Shadel Port secret police have links to many holy oracles, druid prophets and diviners from the wizard university to survey with magic. The emperor has this too but is thousands of miles away. Of course they teleport secret police and heroes when needed. The emperor has reinstituted gladiatorial games and Shadelport has the Dungeon of Death for similar reasons. The Dungeon and Colosseum shows are broadcast to elites by illusion and "official" scrying devices. The poor see street theatre and puppet reenactments.

Other artists offer more illustrative information and tend to be more interested in glorification of the mighty and rich and holy. The decorative arts reach commoners the most and include painters sculptors, architect, decorative craftsmen. decorators, graffiti artists. Players and dancers are tailored to all tastes and are censored the most. Secret and private and criminal shows are common. Comedy especially puppet shows are for the commoners but may be subject to death if rulers are offended. Writers deal with the elite and often have small edition to select clients who may be tolerant or depraved in tastes. Most commoners are illiterate, rich are very literate with the merchant classes in between falling in between. Pamphlets often with illustrations are being printed and having an impact as the illiterate can understand them and are even taking an interest in reading.
