The Fabulous World of DragonDance (TM)

The fabulous world of DragonDance(TM) will be a fabulous setting where your heroic player-characters seek dragons to dance with and win DragonDance battles. Young dragon dancers wander the perfectly safe and barley threatening world of magical adventure and dragon romance. While they wander dragon dancers meet new friends, try tasty new regional snacks and gain new adorable familiar spirit minions. The greatest thrill for every DragonDancer(TM) is to compete at temple regional Dragon Dances held once a century. As the contests are once a century at any one place, so the DragonDancers must travel to new Dragondance temples across the world.

Once a DragonDancer arrives at a Temple they must perform a solo audition to get final selection then if they pass to final selection will be shown a map of local dragons to seduce into the Forbidden Dance with dragons. Each temple has their own preferred dance style and own rules and score system with judges. Each area has different dragons who may or may not like dancing or might think you just want their treasure. Often friends who failed the audition help their audition winning pals seduce a dragon willing to dance. Once a dragon is enthused in the idea of dance it will test the DragonDancer in various ways to see if they are worth becoming one through dance. Finally, after the dragon's test you are ready for the great contest where you become one with your dragon dance partner and compete for fabulous trophies, ribbons and snack food sponsorship deals. For some unlucky dancers who foolishly chose bad dragons, they might get eaten or worse.

Sometimes a special choreographer can be recruited to improve their chances but this requires another journey and meeting another cantankerous supernatural choreographer. Choreographers are ancient immortals who can enhance DragonDancers chances of victory in a contest but are high maintenance and might cause conflict between a DragonDancer and their partner. Some case choreographers are liars or insane or hopelessly out of date or have their own pet dance theory judges don't cares for. During a DragonDance battle, a choreographer improves your chance on the Dance Battle Matrix chart. During the contest rounds, there is a festival to enjoy, friends to meet, snacks to try. There can also be intrigued as some rival dancers might try to influence judges or sometimes a judge has some agenda other than selecting the most beautiful DragonDance.

Quite a bit of DragonDance is wandering looking for a contest then finding dragons and choreographers and the tasty snacks they can be persuaded with. Sometimes distractions and strange spectacles or obstacles might delay you. Sometimes you might have to choose a faster but slightly risky path like a spooky woods or cross a bridge over lava. Sometimes mean failed DragonDancer gangs will demand you dance battle them or hand over all your tasty food items and familiars. Sometimes you meet disturbed people who want to hurt dragons and you have to help them recover from this terrible malady with love, kindness and the healing power of dance. Yes there are dark dank dungeons but the scary monsters use unconventional dance styles that could send you to hospital. Monsters will steal your treats and dance trophies too so there is very little to gain from them mostly unless you're on a quest to please a dragon or choreographer or a judge.

Players can play both kinds of exiting DragonDancer character types in DD, a wizard-dancer or a witch-dancer. There are hundreds of adorable magical spirit familiars you can gather on your journeys that give you magic spells like sheet ghosts, unicorns, mini dragons, talking animals, sprites, goblins, basilisks, manticores, Griffins and many more. To tame your familiar a wizard-dancer treat their familiars with tasty treats or offers to help them in return. A witch has strong allegiances to certain types of spirit and dragon and uses their kinship to persuade familiars to join with them. Naughty magicians might trick, bully, blackmail and otherwise be mean to their familiars and you can help them by defeating their masters and freeing them. Some might join with you in gratitude. Having a dance battle with a wild familiar can result in friendship but failure might send you to the hospital from the complicated otherworldly dance moves.

Sometimes your battles don't go so well and you might end up in hospital which takes time and accrues massive bills. If you cannot be rescued and taken to the hospital or your dragon eats you, the hospital will just clone you which of course is very expensive and sometimes creates legal problems if there are two of you. Some lucrative snack food sponsors include medical benefits and a supply of snacks and branded outfits and uniforms.

Possibly might cross over with my Magical Octopus Princess Adventure game but the humans in that are possibly too mean but could be a crossover.

Against the Snake Tribe

My cave DND game continued. The tribe reached the tundra and granny had made them swear to find a cave for what might be her last winter. At sixteen the tribe felt like a extended family. So heroes set out to explore the region.

Granny cried out about troll beast coming from the north with huge teeth and a hairy tentacle in their face. No not troll beasts or Nyarlathotep but wooly mammoths.  Trieb watched them and kept away and hypothesized trapping them but seeing beasts trumpet to each other made them wary. The chief hunter saw strangers and ran home to send heroes to negotiate being on this land.

Dallas playing a stone axe and spear-wielding warrior
Matt playing a halfling baker with rogue gardener sidekick
Richard playing a pine elf trickster who had some fight back home when a pet was killed

So halfling made a basket filled with herbs and flowers and grain cakes and party went forth. Halfling and the elf had the best chance of making friends. The strangers in mammoth hide made some threatening gestures but party left gifts including a cowrie shell necklace. Strangers investigated and talked and accepted as a gift to stay for a moon plus they were to avoid upsetting holy mammoth herds. Heard of other tribes and agreed there would be a new meeting where tribe leaders would meet the party to negotiate a longer stay. Snake, Hyena and Orc tribes were enemies and unwelcome in the land and strangers killing these enemies would be more welcome.

So spent days scrabbling for food without a lot of success but did find a cave with some smelly hooved humanoids. They headed home to find goatmen tracking them so the elf hid and let them pass, then the halfling and his human hid and finally as the goat folk reached the warrior they were in a three direction ambush. One goat warrior was charmed by elf who kept it charmed a few days before making it a follower reluctantly because it proved a competent warrior and helper. If you treat a charmed being better than it's own kind then they might become a loyal follower.

So everyone moved into the goat cave and party discussed what laws and customs they should develop as they were a mongrel tribe from different peoples and other peoples will frown at them for lacking culture, totems and even a name. So they were the South Tribe as they came from the lost flooded southland over the sea. First law they all agreed on was no cannibalism that all accepted. Then after the spell with shape-shifting gnomes who lived with their dogs a bit too closely so debated banning that. Then debated if it should just be private then someone suggested only certain sex positions should be allowed and eventually gave up before making law number 2.

Discovered a ruined village with stone circle foundations and some rubble-filled stone-lined pits. One had a dirty squarish hole so lowered down the halfling with a stone handlamp of animal fat. Saw was cramped and dirty with a few thin odd bones. Wiped out a warren of degenerate snakeling folk (halfling version of serpent folk, degenerate albino cave folk). Took a bunch of eggs and found a assault hexagonal pillar with reptilian writing which the elf knew. Spoke of fall of the snake kingdoms and a valley nearby that was a hidden holy place for reptiles. Found a green stone pyramid idol in rubble that tended to grow psychedelic alien mould and can cast command 6 times can be recharged with a priest praying for a week.

Went home to discuss with tribe and ate eggs. Next day found someone had tracked the heroes from the snake tunnels wearing leather mochasins. So they tracked them back to the stone village and then followed into the hills a followed a band of snake tribals clean-shaven wearing only lizard skin loincloths with spears and darts and caste makeup. They went into a narrow canyon and saw motion on top as snake tribe went into canyon. So waited till dark and warrior climbed cliff and was attacked by two snake tribe men he defeated. One tried to jump over narrow canyon while those on other side hurled spears, but the warrior slammed the coward. The warrior now in a frenzy lept over the gulf and killed all the guards on that side. Looted a 4 floor rope ladder!

Spent a day into the canyon and climbed up the cliff at night to camp in secret. A giant eagle tried to snatch the halfling and missed by one and got away unharmed. Next day found jungle valley with a huge river, unnaturally tropical in the mountains. Followed cliff and mountains of south to avoid jungle dinosaurs and megafauna. Did find a weird cave where animals came to be healed and the warrior thought killing these animals here would be wrong. Continued till they reached the river, a hundred yards across. Several dog paddled badly but reached shore about a hundred and fifty yards downstream more than they planned. Elf had to send his goat man to rescue thay halfling, they party running along the shore to keep up. A wily plesiosaur attacked and the goat man at great personal risk saved the halfling. Alf shot the beast in the back with arrows and the warrior hurled a critical spear in the monster's mouth. As they rested saw on hills above them on this shore were some great stones and something in trees up there watching. The elf saw apes of several sizes in the jungle.

So they didn't want to go near the apes especially as a warrior had a fursuit onesie made from a flayed white ape they might not like. So went downstream to a huge waterfall that fell into a cavern. Snake symbols were in rocks everywhere including a picture of a hydra. Moved on following the north cliff face till they found a crystal cave where the halfling button mashed a crystal control altar like the ones in the city of the old ones they had seen and revived six reptilians in strange vestments with weird bows (crossbows). T
he elf was confused by having only seen shortbows which impressed humans.

The elf communicated with reptilian script in charcoal and they went outside to talk with stick writing in sand. Most of party puzzled about this squiggling in the sand for an hour. The reptilians explained they cared for the environment of the valley. They spoke of human snake tribe pilgrims who visited to give reptilians gifts. They bid humans leave and not steel any crystals. The party left tucking in their stolen crystal chunks towards the reptile monastery and where the snake tribe pilgrims camped.

We stopped there as a good spot...

Party all speculating on skills to learn to enrich the tribe with food and technology.
Discussions over tribal identity, laws and fitting in with local tribes amusing.
Seem to be ok helping reptiles purge valley of snake tribe humans, white apes and evil wizard spiders

Lots of my COC players not responding to post-plague gatherings still despite everything opening again bit by bit now so a 3 year campaign on hold still. My other dnd game probably dead. No new cases in weeks near me so all good.

84 This crude cyclopean sarcophagi crumbles if any attempt to open it is made. The stone coffin contains the remains of a hunchbacked wizard holding the onyx statue of a squat evil toad god of elder times. Copper disc's with a lost language describe the fall of a long forgotten dynasty of wizard kings. The idol sends the holder dreams and teach strange spells best forgotten with terrible consequences
85 This yellowish stone sarcophagi has carvings of masked dancing figures in tattered scalloped capes. Inside is a beautiful white alabaster coffin carved with a masked figure about to remove their mask. If opened yellow mist floods the area and a bloated white maggoty undead wizard arises who calls more dead to arise and insectoid demons from the stars. Inside are thousands of gold coins with unrecognisable alien script
86 This oval shaped sarcophagi has locals gossiping about the otherworldly music sometimes heard from here. Inside is a coffin with strange designs and brass clamps with strange hexagonal locks. Inside is a swirling vortex to another world without gravity where formless spirits drive men mad. If entered may be able to escape if has a rope or throws a mass in opposite direction to return
87 This old sarcophagi is carved with ghouls feasting on victims. Inside are gnawed skeletal remains and a dank pit into a network of ghoul filled tunnels. They have amassed a treasure trove of grave goods
88 This old sarcophagi has eldritch markings erased by more recent holy symbols. Inside is ancient crumbling coffin, worm eaten useless spell books and the remains of a crowned wizard and a mound of old coins. The wizards ghost will posses a grave robber, preferably a minor follower who can slip away later and will be seen later as a rich powerful new wizard in the area. Possibly it will  build a dungeon and return to breeding abominations, raising the dead and summoning elementals
89 This strange sarcophagi is seamless but if the strange designs are studied a secret door might be found. Inside is a dusty staircase into the depths and a old lantern. Down the 77 steps the explorers enter the land of nightmares, ocupied by strange demons and non human wizards from forgotten prehuman races
90 This stone dome sarcophagi made from rocks and mortar has been built by a angry mob long ago. Inside is a crude wooden box with a terrified grimacing wizened corpse in a long black coa and tall hat clutching a partly burned book. If clothing removed the corpse is revealed to have scaly skin, bristly black hair and tentacles growing from it's waist.
91 This unusually wide sarcophagi depicts a man and woman side by side and alchemical symbols. Inside a cedar wood painted coffin with more realistic depictions of the couple in alchemist robes. Inside is a fused at the hip male and female corpse of a alchemical hermaphrodite. Piles of gold and alchemical ingredients and recipe scrolls are in a large chest at their feet including the process that made the fusion and claims of the marvelous powers such a union grants the participants
92 This red granite heavy sarcophagi is carved with a grinning face. Inside is a red wood coffin with a chaos star on the front. If opened a crazed clown leaps out and tries to explain how it has seen beyond and returned with great wisdom. The creepy jester will increasingly grow bizzare in conduct challenging notions of alignment and morality, The more time spent in his company the more listeners alignments shift to chaos. He will go on to form a cult and cause upheavals in local politics in the name of freedom
93 This sarcophagi smells of mould and if opens it is filled with black and purple toadstools growing in the wrecked remains of a coffin and skeleton. There is some treasure and spoiled jars of wine and a scroll tube describing the death of this former underland explorer. Over next few weeks new strain of fungus appears in area, some helpful and some hostile. Some even grow and hatch into goblins and mushroom folk who worship the mushroom goddess. Some places like old basements even develop into grotto wonderlands of fungus
94 This old crumbling sarcophagi if opened reveals cheap coffin holding a twisted corpse that has chewed off and scratched of his own fingers. Anyone exposed to opening may be exposed to a disease causing them to arise as zombies on death. Over days it spreads and zombies arise that spread the disease further causing a zombie apocalypse
95 This sarcophagi has remains of mosaic tiles featuring rich robed women but the faces have been smashed off by vandals. If opened a delightful scent of incense rises from a staircase going into a small luxurious chamber. Inside are attractive and friendly servants who offer drinks and sex. They claim to be imprisoned here by a wizard who abuses them and they are very grateful. Of course they are shape shifting undead looking for mortals to kill out of misdirected vengeance. When killed or kissed they return to rotting corpses but at least their jewelry and fine glass perfume bottles and makeup cases and grooming tools are intact
96 This sarcophagi is decorated with maritime scenes of ships. Inside with a plain coffin are hundreds of dried stinking fish. In the coffin is the remains of a rich sea captain with his mermaid lover. Scrimshaw whale teeth, strange idols from afar, huge sea shells, poor quality pearl strings, old sea charts and other strange exotic things from the couples adventures. Robbers will be cursed by the fish gods and unable to eat fish ever again
97 This sarcophagi is magically locked and trapped. Inside the coffin is a adventurer from olden times with chest of mixed coins, treasure maps, a mummified donkey head, several minor magic weapons, several cursed magic items, strings of goblin ears and several huge orc skulls. The adventurer might be a robbers ancestor and their spirit will be upset
98 This sarcophagi moulded from mortar has rat hols in the sides. A swarm of rats inside attack if opened and their master a undead were rat bursts from the coffin. All carry disease but the were rat carries high quality thieves tools, a sack of silver and copper, a collection of saucy paintings, a tin of black lotus resin and a collection of ivory and gold pipes. An idol of the rat god allows the god to witness the robbery and rats will constantly cause trouble for the robbers until the god appeased
99 This crude carved sarcophagi leaks green fluid from within. Inside the coffin has many toads sitting on it that hop away as opened. The coffin is slime covered and badly warped. Inside the coffin is a badly decomposed body clutching a strange key. If the key is touched a toadlike chaos demon appears and demands a tribute. If granted a valuable offering the demon will grant them a random strange chaos mutation. If the gift is very valuable the demon ensures it is a useful ability. The key can be used to make bargains with the chaos frogs but the deals get worse and allow them to enter this plane more easily every wish
100 This stone sarcophogi has scenes depicting a god's mythic quest. If disturbed by attempting to open it a gruff voice from with speaks: "I wouldn't do that". If thieves persist the night feaster a demon of divine vengeance appears to punish thieves. If they surrender and beg forgiveness he will only scar them. If defeated the god's followers will be alerted. Inside the sarcophagi is the remains of a brilliant saint the god has earmarked to make into holy relics. A imp will appear and offer to buy the corpse

d100 Strange Memorials

Recently on my Gothic table compilation project I found I had repeated some stuff so now taking a while to check my past blogs. It is a bit time consuming - normally i churn out as fast as I can. Id rather write 3 or 4 blogs imperfect than spend a few days editing and still get things wrong. At worst tables that over lap can just add diversity. I started d100 stuff because I don't like repeated results of smaller dice so being able to use another set occasionally or a Judges Guild book. I like my own stuff because it is nastier and grittier than stuff on market.

This is for graves to find in a sandbox to springboard adventure or exploration

Some Definitions
In older post I had crypts as smaller structures, tombs as larger or more elaborate and mausoleum as a built graveyard. By some definitions Crypt has a surface opening and is mostly underground but mist must have a surface entrance.

Other tables described graves to loot and kickstart adventure or provide distractions. This table more about curious memorials which might just be curiosities, local colour or inspire adventurers to loot them. It's a different approach to same problem but more about decorating grave plots with interesting stuff than leading to adventure.
