USA ~ Humpback Whale - Maui - Hawaii~

...Another wonderful whale postcard from dear postcard friend Glenn🩵... it's always a great pleasure to get a new whale card for my collection👍... spectacular sight of the magnificent "gentle giant of the ocean" seen off Baby Beach on Maui's south shore... they are true "acrobats of the sea"  often seen "breaching" or jumping out of the water and crashing into the waves... although you can go whale watching in Maui from pretty much anywhere along Maui’s shorelines, the south and west sides of the island are the most popular... it is the area most visited by whales in all the Hawaiian islands... an unforgettable experience and one of the favourite things to do on the island......Thanks so much Glenn!ヽ(•‿•)ノ

Photographed by Michael S. Nolan

North Pacific humpback whales are the fifth largest whale species in the world and can weigh anywhere between 25-40 tons, and approximately 1 ton as newborns. They come here to feed on capelin, krill, and squid along the coast.

Their upper (dorsal) body is primarily a dark shade of grey, with distinct areas of white on their flippers (pectoral fins) and under (ventral) bellies. On average, the North Pacific humpback whale can live for about 50 years (although there have been accounts living up to 90 years), and reach sexual maturity between 5-7 years old.

MEXICO ~ Whale Sanctuary - El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve - UNESCO ~

... Wonderful postcard for my whale collection and UNESCO site👍... the largest wildlife refuge in all of Latin America and certainly the most diverse... but what is most spectacular and gives this region uniqueness found nowhere else on this planet, is that it is the birthplace of the Pacific Gray Whale commonly known as the California Gray Whale... this reserve is the winter home of more than 12,000 grey whales... often you are surrounded by several of them at the same time, the chance to see mothers and calves together, the fact that the whales aren’t just passing by but actually are living (mating, breeding) in the area, how close you get to them, the low-key approach of the whale watching tourism (small boats, and they leave each other alone and do not crowd around sightings) makes this an amazing place to visit💙... also home to exquisite populations of sea turtles, Baja California pronghorn, and unique flora across a rich landscape... Big Thanks Gabino! (✿◠‿◠)

El Vizcaino is located in the central part of the Baja California peninsula in the Sebastian Volcano region, between the Gulf of California and the Pacific Ocean. El Vizcaino has a landmass of over 2.5 million hectares. There are also10,000 year old cave paintings and Petroglyphs, 17thC missions and it is the least populated region in Mexico: less than one person per 2km.

The Whale Sanctuary of El Vizcaíno comprises two coastal lagoons, Laguna Ojo de Liebre and Laguna San Ignacio, and their surroundings.

Declared a national biosphere in 1988 and inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1993.

CANADA ~ Orca - Vancouver Island ~

... Another lovely whale postcard💙... original a vintage travel poster... a pair of orcas breaching off the coast of the island...Vancouver Island is one of the best locations worldwide to spot orcas (killer whales)....when it comes to whale watching tours, orcas are often considered the main attraction... the waters around Vancouver Island host large resident pods of nearly 100 of these whales, as well as small pods of transient orcas that travel across wide ranges of coastline... the late summer months are ideal for spotting northern resident orcas, which feed in the Johnstone Strait... Thanks a lot Glenn!! (✿ ♥‿♥)

The orca or killer whale is a toothed whale that is an efficient predator. Orcas grow to be about 8-10 m long, weighing more than  3.600-5.400 kg.

They are the largest member of the dolphin family. Pods usually consist of males, females, and calves of varying ages. Females and juveniles generally remain in the center of the pod, while adult males swim at the wings.

In 2010, Anderson Design Group decided to create classic travel posters featuring our favorite destinations around the globe. The World Travel Poster series now features a poster for every country in Central America, South America, North America, Asia, Europe, and Africa.

"Humpback Whales playing on annual migration path past Gold Coast, North Stradbroke Island, Moreton Bay, Sunshine Coast, Fraser Island & Hervey Bay ."

The Gold Coast welcomes the first pods of whales into Queensland waters and is the best place to watch them with their new calves at the end of the season as they make the way back to Antarctica.

The most characteristic features of the humpback whale are its enormous flippers, which stretch to almost one third of the animal's body length. The humpback is one of the most acrobatic of the great whales and has been observed leaping from the water in nearly 40 consecutive bursts of "joy".Scientists have also recorded patterns of humpback vocalizations which they have likened to birdsong.

The humpback whale exposes its tail flukes in terminal dives. The tail of each humpback whale is visibly unique.

The southern part of the Bahamas island chain has several more islands, which are less known, sparsely populated and undeveloped from a tourism perspective.  These islands are will San Salvador, Long Island, the Exumas, Crooked and Acklins Islands, Inagua and Mayaguana.

USA ~Glacier Bay National Park-Alaska-UNESCO

...A spectacular sight...and a wonderful new whale card for my collection... Many Thanks Edvard!!
Photos by Meldren Anderson and Trevor Kirschhoff
Backside card: A humpback whale traverses the icy waters of Glacier Bay.
Glacier Bay is a Humpback Whale sanctuary. In the park's waters, Humpback Whales benefit from some of the strongest protections found anywhere on our planet.

The marine wilderness of Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve includes tidewater glaciers, snow-capped mountain ranges, ocean coastlines, deep fjords, freshwater rivers and lakes.

When Captain George Vancouver surveyed Southeast Alaska in 1794, the wall of ice that filled the bay was (at its greatest extent) 100 miles long, 20 miles wide, and 4,000 feet thick. Just 250 years later, this same ice has retreated 65 miles, the fastest glacial retreat on record...

Set of lovely stamps with special National Park's cancellation!

At nearly all of the 401 American National Park units (and many of the National Park Service's affiliated areas), one or more National Park Passport Stamps (cancellation stamps) can be acquired at no cost at park visitor centers and ranger stations.

This Caribbean nation is a major tourist destination. The Dominican Republic lies about 800 miles/1,280 kilometers southeast of Miami and is bordered in the Greater Antilles chain by Cuba to the West, and Puerto Rico to the East. The island of Hispaniola, which the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti, is the second-largest island in the Caribbean.

The Dominican Republic has over 200 miles of spectacular beaches along the coastline of the island that stretches for over 800 miles.

The Dominican Republic was explored by Columbus on his first voyage in 1492. He named it La Española, and his son, Diego, was its first viceroy. The capital, Santo Domingo, founded in 1496, is the oldest European settlement in the Western Hemisphere.

Until the late 19th century, the Samaná Peninsula was once its own island, separated from the mainland by a very narrow channel. Over time, sediment filled the channel, joining it to the mainland to form a peninsula.

On of the  main tourist destinations in the Samana Peninsula is Las Terrenas. Terrenas is a town in the Samaná province and was a famous slave trade port for the British in the early 17th C. The name is derived from the French phrase "la terriene" (the landowner).

Samana features the best adventure diving of the north coast of the Dominican Republic.

FIN WHALE
The fin whale is second in size to the blue whale measuring between 70 and 80 feet. For years fin whales outraced whalers at speeds of 40km per hour, or 20 knots.

GREAT SPERM WHALE
The largest of the toothed whales, sperm whales grow to lengths of 60 feet or more. The profile of the great sperm whale is universally known because of the description of the "great white whale" in Moby Dick. Its enormous head and blunt snout with its low slung jaw have come to symbolise all of the great whales.

HUMPBACK WHALE
The most characteristic features of the humpback whale are its enormous flippers, which stretch to almost one third of the animal's body length. AUSTRALIA ~Minke Whale~

Received an awesome whale card with a lovely First day Issue stamp on the front! It is a great new addition for my whale collection... Thanks a lot Xue!!:D

Australia considers the AAT (Australian Antarctic Territory) to be a distinct Australian territory, and release of AAT stamps helps to emphasise this claim since 1957.

The Antarctic minke whale is one of the smallest baleen whales. It has a slender, streamlined body with an elongated head. Minke whales grow to be about 7.8-9m long, weighing about 5,400-6,800kg.
