UZBEKISTAN ~ Nadir Divan-Begi - Bukhara - UNESCO ~

... Last postcard from a country located in the heart of Central Asia, at the crossroads of so many cultures and traditions... Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah is part a of famous architectural complex around Lyabi Huaz... this unique building was built in 1622-23 years by Imamkuli Khan Nadir Divanbegi as a caravan-serai, but later it was converted into a madrasah... having a puzzled layout, this building consists of a warehouse and hostel for travelling caravans... the old town of Bukhara is regarded as a living museum... Big thanks Boris!!!【ツ】Also for using so many beautiful stamps👍and never seen so many postmarks on all the postcards (must have been a postal worker who loved his job😉)...

Bukhara was founded by the Persians. Archaeological findings suggest it was established around 500 BCE, giving it a history of at least 2500 years. In its early days, it gained fame as the City of Fire Worshippers due to the presence of Zoroastrians. After the Arabs Islamized the region, it was given various beautiful titles that reflected the beauty of Islam, such as “The Beauty of the Soul,” “The Dome of Islam,” “Noble,” and “Sacred.” There are nearly 150 historical monuments preserved in the city in a modern day Uzbekistan.

In 1993 the city was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

UZBEKISTAN ~ Aq Saray Palace - Shakhrisyabz - UNESCO ~

.... View of the famous Aq Saray palace, the most iconic place in this small town... the palace was built as a massive and stylish complex of public and residential buildings... it once was a magnificent structure with intricate designs and beautiful tilework... but unfortunately, much of it has been destroyed... only a few sections remain, such as the entrance portal and the massive pillars that once supported the building... Shakhrisabz is a small but lively town with many monuments related to the lives of Amir Timur, the national hero of Uzbekistan, and his family.... Thanks a lot Boris!¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The Historic Centre of Shakhrisyabz, located on the Silk Road in southern Uzbekistan, is over 2,000 years old and was the cultural and political centre of the Kesh region in the 14th and 15thC.

The monuments in the city were built during the Timurid Empire. The town was the birthplace of Amir Timur(1336-1405), who was a great leader of the Timurid Empire. He built the town in grandeur and elegant architecture and made it the second capital of his extensive empire. Other monuments in the town include mausoleums, market centre, bathhouses, tombs, and mosques.

The Historic Center of Shakhrisyabz was listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Site in 2000.The site has been included on the endangered list, because of over-development of tourist facilities in the area.

UZBEKISTAN ~ Kutlug Murad Inak Madrasah - Itchan Kala - Khiva - UNESCO ~

... First of 3 great new Unesco sites... all located along the famous ancient Silk Road... the "Kutlug Murad Inak Madrasah" was the first two-story madrasa in Khiva in its time... and is the only monument where unglazed layered terracotta is used... Itchan Kala is the largest surviving wall city in the Central part of Asia in the middle of a desert... the town is very heavily restored and operates virtually as an open air museum... there are nearly 60 historic buildings preserved including palaces, mosques, minarets and pillars... ..Thanks Boris!【ツ】

Khiva is an ancient city located in Khorezm region. In the 10thC Khiva is mentioned as a major trading center on the Silk Road and was the last resting-place of caravans before crossing the desert to Iran. It was under the Timurid Empire that many of Khiva’s cities rose to prosperity. The city’s rulers, the Khans of Khiva, built the wall to keep off colonial threats. Itchan Kala was preserved by Russian colonial rulerd and is a cultural heritage in modern day Uzbekistan.

Itchan Kala, the inner town of Khiva, is a coherent ensemble of Islamic architecture that dates from the 14th to the 19th century.

It became the first site in Uzbekistan to be inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1990.

UZBEKISTAN ~Bibi-Khanim mosque-Samarkand UNESCO ~

...Fantastic colorful  mosque view...a new "rare" place to add to my collection... and also a new UNESCO site!!Thanks Brigitte.

With nice stamps: Uzbek National Academic Drama Theatre and  two stamps to commemorate Berdaq, an Uzbek poet from the 19C
Uzbekistan, is the only doubly landlocked country in Central Asia and one of only two such countries worldwide.

Samarkand is the second largest city of the counry and one of the oldest inhabited cities (with a 2.500 years old history) in the world.. At the crossroads of the Great Silk road between the east and west it became a melting pot for all the cultures with which it came into contact.

The Bibi Khanum mosque was built between 1399 and 1404. It was once one of the Islamic world's largest mosques, but over the centuries it crumbled and it finally collapsed in an earthquake in 1897.  (In 1974 reconstruction started, unfortunately the inside has not jet been restored)The ensemble consists of two small side mosques and the large central mosque.
