DOMINICAN REPUBLIC ~ Altos de Chavon ~

... Great card nr5 from postcard friend Glenn♥... I'm gonna miss these almost daily "exotic" surprises㋡... it is the most popular attraction in the La Romana region and hosts a cultural center, an archaeological museum, church and amphitheater... sculpted in stone, the site is an impressive example of what a Mediterranean-inspired village would have looked like on the island long ago... this church is as a treasured destination for weddings... dear Glenn it was a great pleasure to be a little part of your holiday... and thanks so much for helping to enlarge my postcard collection with fantastic new places!!\_(♥‿♥)_/

Altos de Chavón was built in 1976 and is a 16thC replica of a Mediterranean style European village located atop the Chavón River in La Romana. The Altos de Chavon village was created by Italian master designer and cinematographer Roberto Coppa, and designed by Dominican architect Jose Antonio Caro.

St. Stanislaus church is a charming stone building in the center of the village of Altos de Chavón. Consecrated in 1979, Pope John Paul II sent the ashes of Poland’s patron saint, St. Stanislaus, and a hand-carved statue from Krakow to commemorate the church’s inauguration.

This Caribbean nation is a major tourist destination. The Dominican Republic lies about 800 miles/1,280 kilometers southeast of Miami and is bordered in the Greater Antilles chain by Cuba to the West, and Puerto Rico to the East. The island of Hispaniola, which the Dominican Republic shares with Haiti, is the second-largest island in the Caribbean.

The Dominican Republic has over 200 miles of spectacular beaches along the coastline of the island that stretches for over 800 miles.

The Dominican Republic was explored by Columbus on his first voyage in 1492. He named it La Española, and his son, Diego, was its first viceroy. The capital, Santo Domingo, founded in 1496, is the oldest European settlement in the Western Hemisphere.

Until the late 19th century, the Samaná Peninsula was once its own island, separated from the mainland by a very narrow channel. Over time, sediment filled the channel, joining it to the mainland to form a peninsula.

On of the  main tourist destinations in the Samana Peninsula is Las Terrenas. Terrenas is a town in the Samaná province and was a famous slave trade port for the British in the early 17th C. The name is derived from the French phrase "la terriene" (the landowner).

Samana features the best adventure diving of the north coast of the Dominican Republic.
