Dushanbe is the capital and largest city of Tajikistan. Dushanbe means Monday in the Tajik language. It was so named because it grew from a village that originally had a popular market on Mondays (as Dushanbe means Monday in Persian language). Until 1929, the city was known in Russian as Dyushambe, and from 1929 to 1961 as Stalinabad.
Named for the father of Tajik literature and the first president of the Tajik Academy of Sciences, the Sadriddin Aini State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater, or "Opera-Ballet" is located on Dushanbe’s main street, Rudaki Avenue. Completed in 1942, the theater was originally built as a gift from Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin to the people of Tajikistan.
Since 1944, the Theatre has played host to opera performances in both the Russian and Tajik languages.

Tajikistan is a small landlocked country in Central Asia that borders Afghanistan to the south, China to the east, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and Uzbekistan to the west and northwest. The ancient Silk Road passed through it.
It is the country of mountains and rivers. In fact, 93% of the territory of Tajikistan is occupied by mountains which belong to the highest mountains groups of the Pamir and the Tien Shan Mountains with absolute heights varying from 300 m up to 7,495 m.
The Tajik people came under Russian rule in the 1860s. In 1929 Tajikistan was made one of the component republics of the Soviet Union, the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic and it kept that status until its independence in1991.
Tajikistan is the only former Soviet state with Islam as its official religion. During the course of seven decades of political control, Soviet policy makers were unable to eradicate the Islamic tradition.
