USA ~Ocracoke Lighthouse-North Carolina~

It looks to be a fantastic place for a visit...Thanks Janie!!
"Ocracoke Island, 14 miles long is rich in maritime history and maintains the aura of quaint, quiet fishing villages of yesterdays"...

Global Forever stamp that shows the beauty of our entire planet. (Issued: 28-01-2013)

Ocracoke Light was built in Hyde County, on Ocracoke Island in 1823. The lighthouse stands 75 feet (23 m) tall. Its diameter narrows from 25 feet (8 m) at the base to 12 feet (3.7 m) at its peak and it is the oldest operating lightstation in North Carolina.

It is believed that an Indian village once existed at the site of the lighthouse.

The island of Ocracoke is a part of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. It is one of the most remote islands in the Outer Banks, as it can only be reached by one of three public ferries, private boat, or private plane. The entire island is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

USA ~Northern Carolina Lighthouses~

Sent by Sheila. For centuries, lighthouses have been erected to protect ships and guide them safely away from low shoals. Each lighthouse has individual markings making it readily identifiable from a distance. Most of them are open for tourists and visitors providing a historic view of times gone by.
