ESTONIA ~ Tallinn - UNESCO ~

...Beautiful panoramic view... in winter, Tallinn becomes a true ❄️Winter Wonderland❄️... there is nothing more magical than taking a stroll in the snow-covered streets of Tallinn's well preserved medieval old town... the city's iconic skyline is dotted with church spires and red-roofed towers... there are numerous monuments to see and visit within a walking distance... the city walls, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the orthodox church, the palace and numerous cobbled streets and old merchant houses, they all make up the atmosphere of the place... although it is an European country my last received postcard from Estonia was almost 10 years ago😮... Thanks a lot Gian Luca and Raffaella!【ツ】
Estonia lies in Northern Europe and is one of the Baltic States. It is the northernmost, the smallest and the least populous of the three Baltic States and borders the Baltic Sea of the North Atlantic Ocean and two countries: Latvia and Russia. Tallinn is the capital city. As part of the influential Hanseatic League, Tallinn was home to wealthy merchants who left their mark on the city's architecture.

The Old Town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.

ESTONIA ~Struve Geodic Arc-Tartu Observatory-UNESCO

...A scientific UNESCO site...thinking this chain was accomplished around 200 years ago is simply astonishing...it's my second point after the one in Norway...still a lot to go (◕‿-). Thanks a lot Patrick!!
© Bernt Rostad
The Observatory in Tartu is on a hill overlooking the town. The upper portion of the observation tower can be winched around so that the observation opening for the telescope can be oriented 360 degrees.

The Struve Geodetic Arc is a chain of survey triangulations stretching from Hammerfest in Norway to the Black Sea, through 10 countries and over 2,820 km, which yielded the first accurate measurement of a meridian. The chain was established and used by the German-born Russian scientist Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve in the years 1816 to 1855 to establish the exact size and shape of the earth.

In 2005, 34 of the triangulation points – the ones that are distinguished by a landmark – became protected and included as cultural memorials on the UNESCO world heritage list. This makes it the longest inscription on the WHS.

Estonia is the most northerly of the Baltic states. It is a mainly flat country on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, with many lakes and islands. Much of the land is farmed and forests covering almost half of Esotonia's territory. The capital, Tallinn, is one of the best-preserved mediaeval cities in Europe.

ESTONIA ~Saarema~

Here is a lovely card from Estonia...The yellow-golden colors are just fantastic with that beautiful Kuressaare castle on the backgrond

Saaremaa is the largest island in Estonia located in the Baltic Sea. The capital of the island is Kuressaare, which has about 15,000 inhabitants; the whole island has over 39,000 inhabitants.Kuressaare Episcopal Castle is unique in being the only intact medieval fortress in the Baltic countries. The late Gothic dolomite was built of local dolomite with the purpose to house the bishop when he was visiting Kuressaare from mainland Haapsalu. The building is a convent-type castle with a square main plan around an inner courtyard, and the oldest part, the Tower of Tall Hermann, is thought to date back to 1260.

ESTONIA~Palmse~

Park Hotel Palmse, the converted manor distillery, is set amongst unspoilt nature.

The large 18th century residence, which once belonged to the von Pahlen family, has been restored and is now, once more, the jewel in the crown of the park. The group of buildings which form the manor are surrounded by park, where trees, both common and rare, can be found, as well as a lake with swans and a garden pavilion. Beyond, lie the woods and the forest. Nowadays, the manor itself is a museum and is open to the public. One of the largest of the group of buildings in the manor complex is the former distillery which has been rebuilt to form the hotel. This has meant that the unity of the manor buildings has been preserved as a whole, taking nto account heritage and environment

ESTONIA ~Panga Cliff-Saarema

Although Estonia a country is in Europe and only a trip of two hours by plane from Brussels to Tallin, I know so little about it....
The Panga cliff is located on the northern shore of Saaremaa, at the end of the Kuressaare - Võhma road, close to Panga village. It is the highest of the Saaremaa and Muhu cliffs, reaching to a maximum of 21.3 meters. The entire cliff is approximately 2.5 kilometers long.

Found a great story about the Panga Cliff:
Folk tradition ties Panga cliff as a place of worship and sacrifice for the ancient Saarlanders. It is known that until well into the 19th century, local fishermen poured libations of beer and whisky over the edge of the cliff, especially at midsummer eve, to ensure lots of fish during the coming year. There is a fishing spell that was chanted in Mustjala parish, and it says: "Come, come closer codfish to me. Bite my hook my dearest gray one. My hooks are silver, dipped in gold and slipped in lead."

It is not known whether the requisite virgin was ever sacrificed here, but it is known that the last animal sacrifice took place during the 1960's. Mustjala kolhoz had finally acquired a prize seed bull. The animal was let loose among the cows that were pastured on the cliff meadows. In a delerium of utter happiness and apparently following some ancient instincts, the bull soon made a beeline for the edge of the cliff and over it went. No doubt the fishing was good that summer.
