GAMBIA ~ Flag ~

... Great flag view from the FOTW postcard series... coming from the smallest country on mainland Africa although it has one of Africa’s densest populations... the national flag of Gambia was adopted in 1965 after gaining independence from Britain... it is designed in such a way that it not show any political influences or bias so that it could represent the nation as a whole... this fact makes the flag of Gambia one of the few national flags in Africa that is not derived from the flag of an existing political party or movement... the red refers to the sun, the blue represents the Gambia River, the green represents the land, and the white stands for unity, peace, and purity... Thanks Alena!ヽ(ヅ)ノ

BELGIUM ~ FOTW ~

... First of two great Belgian postcards... a nice flag view of my own country... a little trivia😉... the flags are flown above the castles and palaces at the time the King is in Belgium... the flags are not flown when the king is on trip to another country or on holiday outside of Belgium... with the first newly released stamps of 2022 and great special postmark👍... clouds in all shapes and shades, featuring paintings by the artist Jan de Maesschalck... Thanks a lot Johan!【ツ】

The national flag of Belgium (Dutch: Vlag van België, French: Drapeau belge, German: Flagge Belgiens) is a tricolour consisting of three equal vertical bands displaying the national colours of Belgium: black, yellow, and red.

The colours were taken from the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant, and the vertical design may be based on the flag of France.  It has the unusual proportions of 13:15.

In 1830 the flag, at that time non-officially, consisted of three horizontal bands, with the colors red, yellow and black. On January 23, 1831, the National Congress enshrined the tricolor in the Constitution, but did not determine the direction and order of the color bands. As a result, the "official" flag was given vertical stripes with the colors black, yellow and red.

SIERRA LEONE ~ Flag ~

... A fantastic way to end this week👍... a great flag from the FOTW postcard series... Sierra Leone remains among the world’s poorest countries...  as I did before I donated money to get a w&s postcard from this really "rare" African country... the donations received for postcards were used this time for a number of sanitary pads projects... the idea is that women can make pads with their hand with local material (now bought with the donations) and sell them... girls will no longer miss school and the participants were mothers who have disabled children... so, the profit from selling the pads will go a long way... I'm so glad to be able to support this local project a little bit this way❤️(I've even seen pictures where women were making them😊)... Big Thanks again Alena! (✿◠‿◠)

Togo is one of the smallest countries in all of Africa... the colors of the flag are the same as those utilized by the pan-African movement, a political ideology designed to unite all African countries... the current flag of Togo was adopted in 1960, the day after this country gained its independence from France... the 5 stripes that make up the background are representative of the 5 political regions... the golden yellow color symbolizes the subsistence agricultural work performed by the residents of Togo, while the green is represents the agricultural produce... the red stands for love, although some sources claim it represents the blood shed during the fight for independence... finally, the white star symbolizes hope and purity... Thanks a lot Boyana!!【ツ】

GREENLAND ~ Flag ~

... Great flag view from the FOTW postcard series... coming from the biggest island on Earth and the least-densely populated country... a simple, but beautiful flag... with a lovely selection of stamps and nice fish postmark from Tasiilaq.... Thanks a lot Nina!!【ツ】
The Greenlandic flag was hoisted for the first time on June the 21st 1985 which is the national day of Greenland. It was designed by Thue Christiansen, a native of Greenland. The flag is called Erfalasorput, which literally means “our flag” in Greenlandic.

The flag has two colours, red and white, which symbolizes it's relationship with Denmark. The flag is split by a horizontal line and has a circle a little bit to the left of its middle. The circle represents the sun and its warmth as it returns in midsummer. The white is symbolic of the ice and snow that covers most of the island.

The flag of Greenland is the only national flag of a Nordic country or territory without a Nordic Cross.
