SPAIN ~Garajonay National Park - La Gomera - UNESCO~

... Canary Islands beauty nr 2💚... wonderful evergreen forest view with tourist footpath... the Garajonay National Park lies at the very heart of La Gomera... this park, contrasts with the rest of the Canary Islands... instead of volcanic landscapes it is a densely forested area with laurel trees... a jewel of nature... the second smallest and one of the most unspoiled islands of the Canary Islands... the Garajonay NP is an area of evergreen mist-covered forests... a prehistoric landscape that has been sculpted over millions of years... the Park has a unique ecosystem and is of extreme ecological importance... the highest point of La Gomera is found in the national park and on a clear day you can see the islands of El Hierro, La Palma, Tenerife and Gran Canaria... a major tourist attraction... the park has an extensive network of trails for hiking... also a Visitor and Information Center... Thank you very much dear Andrene! (✿◠‿◠)

Located in central and northern parts of the La Gomera Island,  the Garajonay National Park encompasses an area of around 40 km2.  It is named after the highest point on the island, a rock formation, which stands at 1,484 m. Garajonay was designated a National Park in 1981.

Mostly forest landscapes but there are also numerous different plant formations to be seen; everything from the laurisilva, through white tree heath, mocan and the strawberry tree.

As with most island ecosystems the variety of mammals on the island is limited, as the surrounding sea hinders migration, although endemic populations of reptiles and frogs are well represented and there are 27 species of bird, including the Eurasian Sparrowhawk, the White Tailed Laurel Pigeon and the Barbary Partridge.

La Gomera National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.

SPAIN ~San Cristóbal de La Laguna - Tenerife - UNESCO ~

... First of two great postcards coming from the Canary Islands🙂... the historic capital of the Canary Islands, La Laguna is still considered to be the archipelago’s cultural heart... it was the first unwalled colonial city and still preserves its original 15thC layout almost intact... this layout was used as a model for building many other colonial cities in America... its streets, with their fantastic shopping atmosphere, gastronomy and leisure, are also full of monuments and historic buildings... this town is also home to the University de La Laguna... the oldest university on the Canary Islands... La Laguna is not primarily a tourist town and most visitors just come for a day trip... Big Thanks Andrene! (✿ ♥‿♥)

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is located on the Island of Tenerife, part of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands.

It was founded  in the late 15thC by Alonso Fernández de Lugo and was the capital of the island after the conclusion of the conquest of the islands.

San Cristóbal de la Laguna consists of two distinct parts – the Upper Town (Villa de Arriba) of 1497 and the Lower Town (Villa de Abajo) of 1502.

With examples of Mudejar, Neoclassical, Modernist, Rationalist, and Contemporary styles from different times in the islands history.

In 1999, La Laguna was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site,

Founded in 1478, Las Palmas is the largest city and the capital of Gran Canaria. The majority of historic and cultural monuments are located in the oldest district of Las Palmas - Vegueta. Among maze of paved streets we find for example: the famous square Plaza de Santa Ana, the huge impressive cathedral Catedral de Santa Ana and a house, in which Christopher Columbus had been staying, and where today is the museum dedicated to him.

SPAIN ~Gran Canaria - Santa Lucia~

...as being a favorite holiday destination for Belgian people the island  is mostly  associated with the stereotype of sun, beach, sea and all-inclusive deals... not this amazing nature and unique landscape...
50% of the territory of the Canary islands are a protected natural area...

CANARY ISLAND ~Gomera-The Garajonay National Park-UNESCO~

By seeing all the wonderful views of the "Bosque del Cedro" I understand why this Island is called a "jewel of the Nature"... Just magnificent... Would love to hiking in this mystic ancient forrest!!
Beautiful butterfly stamp too!

La Gomera is one of the seven Canary Islands, located in the Atlantic Ocean, and 150 kms. from the African coast.
It is is a small island having a total area of some 378 sq kilometres and hardly 20 km. from north to south. Yet it conceals an ecological treasure without precedent and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Few places in the world have such a wealth of natural beauty as La Gomera, even more interesting because of its past prehistoric character.

CANARY ISLANDS ~Fuerteventura~

Yeaaaah!!! Already a new place at the beginning of 2011.... I know the Canary Islands are a populair holiday destination for Belgian people... But to live at such a place with almost 365 days of sunshine must be wonderful... I admit I'm a bit jeaulous of the sender...
The name Fuerteventura (sounds really exotic) is said to come from the word Fuerte (meaning strong) and ventura(viento meaning wind)and sometimes the winds are strong on Fuerteventura.
Love the stamp too!

Fuerteventura a Spanish island, is one of the Canary Islands, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa and it is the second largest island after Tenerife.

Fuerteventura is the oldest Canary Island, and was formed about 70 million years ago as a result of volcanic activity
