UFC Fight Night 61: 10 GIFs of Antonio Silva X Frank Mir

UFC Fight Night 61 (aka UFC Fight Night:  Bigfoot vs Mir) was held Feb 22, 2015 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. This event set the record for the most wins by underdogs in 10 out of 11 bouts!

Former 2-time UFC Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir (#13 / 16W-9L) faced the favorite Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (#8 / 18W-6L, 1 NC) in the Main Event. Mir going into the fight had a losing streak of 4 fights vs some of the top fighters in the Heavyweight Division, namely Alistair Overeem, Josh Barnett, Daniel Cormier and Junior Dos Santos. Silva in his last 4 fights saw him beat Alistair Overeem, a Loss to Cain Velazquez, a Draw against Mark Hunt and was KO’d by Andrei Arlovski.

Mir KO’d Bigfoot at the 1:40 mark in Rd 1 with a Left Jab-Left Hook combo and awarded a Performance of the Night bonus of $50,000. With this win, it was Mir’s first since 2011, and he set a record with tallying 12 Finishes, the most Finishes in UFC Heavyweight history. Rounding out the Top 4  Most Finishes in UFC Heavyweight history:  Gabriel Gonzaga is 2nd with his 11 finishes; Andrei Arlovski (10) and last but not least, Cain Velasquez with 9 finishes.

In the post-fight interview, Mir credited his new boxing coach, Angelo Reyes, for putting him on a different level – switching to Orthodox Stance (for Righties, Left Hand in front and Right in rear).

“I came out looking for the jab. I knew that, you know, hey, he hits hard. No doubt behind that he has a long right hand so when I got back to boxing, and I wrestle left side forward , so both the wrestling coach and our head coach Ricky,  Angelo said, ‘Hey, switch back to orthodox.’ So I did, that’s why I took the extra time off, learned how to box the correct way. I got back to the roots on it. That’s where you saw the jab, setting it up. It sets up everything, I’ve never had a dominating jab. And really, the dominating jab is an important punch, especially in the heavyweight division.”

Here are some GIF highlights I’ve made of the fight.

Congratulations to Frank Mir!

Enjoy!

GIF of Vicious Elbow KO from Muay Thai fight

Of the combat sports, one of the most brutal is undoubtedly Muay Thai. It's known as the Art of Eight Limbs:  2 Legs, 2 Knees, 2 Fists AND 2 Elbows. One of the favored positions for Muay Thai fighters is the Clinch where Takedowns, Knees and Elbows can be effected.

I saw a video on Facebook and forgot which page/group/friend it was from. I don't know the fighters. I took the liberty of making 6 GIFs from the video which featured a vicious Elbow Knockout from the Clinch.

If you know the fighters/fight, please let me know. It is deeply appreciated!

WARNING! Not for the faint of heart!

Enjoy!

UPDATE ADDED 8/8/14

My friend StretchPlum had this to say about Brian London and this fight:

London was somewhat over the hill at the time but, as he said, he was never a really good boxer, just really fit. He's 80 now, and owns several night clubs. He runs 10 or more miles a day. He lost a challenge to Patterson's title 7 or 8 years before this. One of the guys he beat leading up to Patterson was Gold Medalist Pete Rademacher, who was the only guy to fight for the heavyweight title (against Patterson) in his first fight. Rademacher is famous for, at 85, riding a gas powered unicycle in parades.

My friend Buka had this to say about Brian London and this fight:

I remember that fight. They asked London if he'd fight him in a rematch. He said, "Sure. If you tie a fifty pound weight to each of his legs."

UFC 175 - Ronda Rousey X Alexis Davis

This past Saturday, July 5, 2014, at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, Ronday Rousey, UFCWomen's Bantamweight Champion faced #2 Challenger Alexis Davis. On paper, this was a good fight given Davis was both a Muay Thai fighter as well as a BJJ Black Belt. She sported a record of 16-5 going into the Championship and Rousey a perfect 9-0. Many wondered how Rousey would fare against a BJJ Black Belt.

This was Ronda Rousey's second consecutive fight via knockout. She required only 16 seconds to finish Davis. Rousey's finish of Davis was the second-fastest knockout in the history of UFC title bouts. The fastest knockout is Andrei Arlovski's 15-second finish of Paul Buentello at UFC 55 in October 2005. This 10th win was also Rousey's fourth consecutive UFC Bantamweight title defense.

"I box six days a week and grapple four days a week. I have more to catch up on striking, so I do that the most."
~Ronda Rousey

The 16 seconds finish was all her hard work/training to date as she noticeably made tremendous progress in her standup.

The finishing sequence was a right hand to Davis' chin and followed up with a knee to the midsection. As Davis doubled over, Rousey hip tossed her and landed into the Scarf Hold position (Judo's Kesa Gatame). Rousey rained 10 punches on the defenseless challenger. Davis went noticeably limp after the 9th one, which prompted referee Yves Lavigne to declare the fight over.

NOTE: My sincerest gratitude to Michael W. and Pierre H. for help in the technical Judo name of the throw ("Harai Goshi")! I'm bad with terms/names sometimes. Also my sincerest gratitude to John E. for the English translation of the technical Judo name ("Sweeping Loin Hip Throw" and not just "Hip Throw" which is technically an "O-Goshi".
