Happy ThanksGIFing/Thanksgiving! (2014 edition)

Last year I picked my 8 favorite GIFs that I've made and posted them here:

What does GIFs have to do with Turkey? ThanksGIFing was a pun of ThanksGIVing ... I know, I know, I'm so punny! LOL @ me!!

Following up this year, I'm going to post the 5 Most Popular GIF Sets as well as picking 5 of My Favorites. It will not be easy. However, I wanted to share first the following quote from Henry Van Dyke:

“Gratitude is the inward feeling of kindness received.  Thankfulness is the natural impulse to express that feeling.  Thanksgiving is the following of that impulse.”

Happy Thanksgiving to my readers who celebrate! I give thanks to many many things, however, suffice it to say, I give thanks to you readers for helping me do what I do!

I thank you for joining me in my Sojourn of Septillion Steps... THANK YOU!!

Without further ado, here are the most popular GIF Sets of 2014 (well the period of Thanksgiving 2013 through yesterday) ... ENJOY!!

5 Most Popular GIF Sets

5. Counting down the 5 Most Popular GIF sets of 2014 is the nasty leg break in Chris Weidman X Anderson Silva II - UFC 168. The GIF below is the first leg check, it was the 2nd leg check that broke Silva's leg:

7 more Round 1 GIF highlights can be seen here including, WARNING!!!, Anderson Silva's nasty leg break:

4. Round 1 GIF highlights of the Jon Jones X Glover Teixeira - UFC 172 fight ranks as the 4th most popular GIF set I've made in 2014:

4 more Round 1 highlights can be seen here:

3. One of the most painful MMA fights to watch was Jon Jones X Glover Teixeira - UFC 172. Jones clinched Teixeira and executed 5 shoulder cranks in 5 rounds captured in 4 GIFs (if I missed any, please let me know):

OUCHY!!

3 more GIFs here:

2. There is a beauty in watching a good throw executed. Ronda Rousey is an Olympic Bronze Medal Judoka. This was the most viral GIF set I made prior to the Phil Simms knifethrowing set above from a video of a training session she posted to her Facebook:

SWEEEEET!!

Enjoy 10 more GIFs here:

1. This Phil Simms knifethrowing set was the most popular, out of all my GIF posts of 2014 to date, this went viral the fastest:

Did Phil Simms really throw those knives on the TV show Elementary? Find out the answer as well as checking 7 more GIFs here:

My 5 Favorite GIFs

5. Coming in as my 5th favorite GIF I've made in 2014 is the martial arts legend, Dan Inosanto. He gave a demo at the Smithsonian Institute. It blows my mind how everyday objects can be used in Self-Defense. Here Manong Inosanto uses a "Malong" (similar to a sarong which is worn around the waist, the malong is slung over a shoulder) for a choke:

Check out 3 more GIFs of the Malong and Stickgrappling performed by Manong Inosanto and Guro Joel Clark:

4. In recognition of Dan Henderson's birthday, I made some GIFs of his knockouts. The Knockout is a thing of beauty, just like a well-executed Throw. Check out this KO from Dan's classic fight against Wanderlei Silva from their Pre-UFC PRIDE days:

Lights out!

Enjoy 3 more KO GIFs here:

3. One aspect of the Martial Arts is Respect. This next GIF displays the Respect between 2 world-class grapplers. After ~14 mins grueling submission-only match, Josh Barnett submitted Dean Lister:

HESPECT! :)

For 9 more GIFs of the highlights of the match including some nasty Catchwrestling moves, please check out:

2. My second favorite GIF is of the BJJ great Rickson Gracie and his diaphragmin action from his Yoga/Ginastica Natural training. He demos it in the Ed Norton Incredible Hulk movie:

Please check out the following for the full GIF Set:

1. Gina Carano, MMA fighter and actress was in the movie, Haywire. She can kick your butt, submit you, or disarm you with her beauty and smile. This is my favorite GIF of 2014 that I've made:

When asked a question, Gina's reply of "No."

Please check out the following link for the full first GIF Set of Gina in her movie, Haywire:

Hope you enjoyed the 5 Most Popular GIF Sets of 2014 on this site as well as My 5 Favorite GIFs of 2014!

Shoulder Crank GIFs from Jon Jones X Glover Teixeira - UFC 172

Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones faced challenger Glover Teixeira at UFC 172. GT suffered a torn labrum in his April 26, 2014 fight vs. Jones. It was Teixeira's first loss in 20 fights which spanned 9 years.

GT had a MRI done and the prognosis was the labrum tear. Date and venue for surgery is to be determined.

The injury came from the first round when Jones improvised a move that he had wanted to attempt since his high school wrestling days where it is illegal. Jones whizzered/overhooked GT's loose underhook and cranked. The injury pretty much neutralized GT's feared right hand.

Round 1

Check out the rest of the rounds in which JJ shoulder cranked!

Round 2

Round 3

Round 4

GT's coach, John Hackleman on the injury:

"When I found out after the fight about the injury, it broke my heart," Hackleman said. "Had I known, I probably would have stopped it even though everyone would have hated my guts.

"So he just fought on with a torn labrum, swinging. It wasn't like he was running, he was moving forward and banging. It's unbelievable to think of going five rounds with Jones like that. And we're not taking anything away from Jones because he caused the injury. Both the eye and the shoulder. So kudos to Jones for doing that. They are both legal moves. He didn't try to hurt Glover intentionally, he did what he had to do to win.

"It just shows the mental fortitude and toughness of Glover. It shows what he's capable of. It made me proud, man."

Excerpted from mmafighting.com.

The argument for banning the Shoulder Crank is that the defender has no time to tap/submit. The counter-argument is that the Rules are the way they are currently. Any fighter who steps into the Octagon knows the risks involved and willingly places him/herself in harm's way.

What say you readers? Should the Shoulder Crank be banned from MMA/UFC?

GIFs of UFC 172 - Jon Jones vs Glover Teixeira Rd 4

Previously, I posted my GIF Highlights of:

Greg Jackson, Jon Jones' coach, talked about Jon's different attacks and improvisation in an interview with MMAJunkie:

“The thing with Jon is that you have to gameplan for creativity,” said Jackson. “What that means is you identify the safety zones that Glover has, and then I leave it to Jon as to what he wants to do.

“Now, the double handgrabs and the elbows are all protocols that we do. Did we specifically say, ‘Do this to Glover?’ Absolutely not. But I never want to put a fighter like Jon in a box; ‘This is exactly what you have to do and how you do it.’ I think that’s a disservice to what makes him great. I think you put him in a position to where he understands what’s going to happen in a fight, he understands he needs to be in great shape, and then you give him positions and let him work and be creative and flow.

“It’s hard to have a definition of a gameplan. A gameplan isn’t always, ‘Do this specifically and do that specifically.’ It can be, ‘You need to avoid these things, and then you need to take control in these certain positions and then flow, and mix it up.’ I think that’s one of the things that makes Jon so incredible is his ability to improv. You teach him the notes, and then you let him do improvisational jazz to his heart’s content.”

“It reminds me a lot of Georges (St-Pierre), who I was lucky enough to work with for a lot of years. GSP had that same kind of (versatility to where) if you shut down his takedowns, he’d blast you with his jab and his nice right hand. He’s very versatile.

“I don’t want to say that he’s the greatest fighter of all time until he’s closer to the end of his career But he’s certainly on his way of being so.”

“You have to be able to push the envelope a little. You have to be able to do new things, and morale is such an important part of fighting. So we could just jab and move the entire fight, and we’d probably win, but that’s not fun for the fans, it’s not fun for the fighter; there’s just not a lot in it. So it’s much better to try to push the envelope to see what you can come up with, to use these different protocols in different places.

“Some fighters aren’t like that at all. They want to know, ‘I need to know a, b and c, exactly where I need to be at all times,’ and that’s fine, if that’s that kind of fighter. But a very creative and flowing fighter like Jon, you need to give him strong positions to move from and let him have free reign to do what he wants.”

Here is Round 4 which features 8 GIFs! My sincerest apologies if the page loads slowly due to the loading up of the 8 GIFs. Most of them are short, so it shouldn't be that long of a page loading.

Enjoy!

UFC 172 - GIF Highlights of Rd 2 of Jones x Teixeira

Yesterday, I posted my GIF Highlights of:

Today, I present to you Round 2 which features 8 GIFs! My sincerest apologies if the page loads slowly due to the loading up of the 8 GIFs. Most of them are short, so it shouldn't be that long of a page loading.

Enjoy!

Always seemed like Jones was only throwing, what in Jeet Kune Do is called Single Direct Attacks.
One technique and then stop. Here's a sequence 2 sidekicks and a followup elbow!

Intra-round SloMo of the fingers in the eyes
I think it's unintentional, and due to his huge reach advantage, he keeps his hand on his opponent's head/face to guage the distance, as well as collapse the arm for an elbow to the face.

Throughout the five rounds, Jones would throw elbows, but only single ones.
This was the only time in the fight I recall seeing 3 consecutive elbows!

Awesome Shoulder Bump!
Never understood why it's not used more... Taiji/Tai Chi and other MA teaches the shoulder bump. Yes, I said "Tai Chi"!

Look familiar?
