Josh Barnett's post to the Underground MMA forum after win over Dean Lister at Metamoris 4

Excerpted from http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/

For all who watched Me vs Dean

Or really anyone that followed along.

Last Saturday at Metamoris was a very proud moment for me for a lot of reasons.
Firstly, I am so proud in being able to win the Heavyweight title in the name of all my coaches and for all of Catch Wrestling. I chose to walk out there in the classic attire of the old school pro wrestlers from which I trace my lineage to respect and honor those whom I dedicate this match: the late Billy Robinson and Karl Gotch. The plain black trunks I wore, the robe, and the black boots are in homage to another one of my mentors: Antonio Inoki. Even the towel I had (Which had Inoki's poem "The Road" on it in Kanji) is in respect to Inoki-san.
I couldn't have performed to the best of my abilities without the help of my coach Erik Paulson and the grueling practices and coaching from Jacob Harmon; My training partners (Especially Erik Hammer and Babalu) who pushed me throughout camp and made me fight every day; and Dan Panosian for being willing to get up early and lift me all those days.
Dean Lister is a man I was proud to get the chance to just wrestle with let alone claim a victory over. He is a great wrestler and great guy. I have known and respected Dean for many years and with as much admiration as I have for him, it was a necessity that I got out there and wrestled him at some point in my life. He made me work for anything I got and was always working to set me up for something on the mat out there. I had to wrestle smart and at my best to not end up tapping the mat against such a dangerous grappler.
Lastly, thank you for the persistence and desire to have me wrestle on your show Ralek. Thank you to Metamoris all the people who worked the show. Thank you to James Law and Scott Hirano for their amazing photos. And thank you to all came to support, watched, and cheered us on out there. It makes us as wrestlers happy to leave all out on the mat for you all.

Josh

> Penguin of Death - Did you think Ralek was a little disrepectful to you in the interview?

No. I never took it that way. I think he has a very particular personality that may throw some folks off but he and I have been cool f
or years.

Josh

Josh replied with:

"Don't fear what happens if you keep going on this road. With fear, there will be no road. If you give one step, the step becomes a road. Go on without fear, then you will find out." - A. Inoki

"You're a f*cking animal, Josh. That was a beautiful performance and a huge victory for you and also for catch wrestling. F*cking awesome stuff."

Rickson Gracie vs Eddie Bravo!! (OK, not really :-)

Sorry for the misleading title LOL @ me. Rickson Gracie vs Eddie Bravo would have been an EPIC match if it ever happened.

Instead, this is a video of Eddie Bravo explaining the Rubber Guard to Rickson!

Eddie was talking a mile a minute! Either he's excited to be talking to Rickson, one of the living legends of BJJ or perhaps it's because what he's talking about is something near and dear to his heart. He's passionate about the Rubber Guard because he created it and is happy to be teaching/explaining it. He truly believes in it and the passion flow through and is pretty evident in this video.

Rickson is a True Warrior/Martial Artist with an Open Mind ... living... adapting... he seemed reserved. Not sure if it was like anyone else seeing something being taught them by a master practitioner for the first time and he is soaking it all in, didn't have time to 'digest' it yet. Perhaps, he didn't want to say anything either yea/nay about the Rubber Guard until he had time to analyze it a bit more.

NOTE: I had scheduled this entry to publish, when I came across this from The Great Rickson Gracie by Eddie Bravo (bolded text my emphasis):

"[SNIP]

Sitting there for 3 hours listening to him tell those old street fighting stories gave my brain the chills. This was a dream of mine ever since I began my Jiu Jitsu journey 20 years ago. I actually never thought it would actually come true, even in recent years. Rickson just seemed to yoda like, too mysterious, too out of reach, like getting to hang out with Mohammed Ali or Michael Jordan. Like that would ever happen, right? But BOOM! It happened, and all of a sudden Joe and I were having a conversation with this enigmatic martial arts icon.

And just like that 3 hours flashed by and it was over. I swear I could’ve gone 10 hours, EASILY. But it was over and it was time to go. As we were walking out of the studio into the front waiting room I thought to myself, maybe I could show him the rubber guard really quick?? Or maybe he’s in a hurry to get somewhere and he simply wouldn’t have enough time?? F*ck it I said, I’m gonna give it a shot. Getting to show Rickson what my students and I have been working on the last 10 years would be insane. I didn’t know how much time he would actually give me so I felt my pitch would have to be machine gun like, I had to make as many vital points as possible before he said, “I’d love to see more but I got to be somewhere”. So I rattled off my rubber guard speech faster than ever, like those disclaimers at the end of Nissan commercials. I was sweating, out of breath, while inside I was thinking “Is this really Rickson Graice inside my rubber guard or am I on 25 grams of Ecuadorian mushrooms?!?!” I am very confident about my Jiu Jitsu philosophy, plus I just hung out with him for 3 hours but I was still obviously a little nervous to be showing this Jiu Jitsu god some 10th Planet material. I just had to get all the rubber guard scenarios out before he left which could have been at any moment. It was like Eminem on a gallon of Cave Man coffee, no cream, black like Charlie Murphy’s anus but with no rhymes. I couldn’t help it, I just had to let him see what we’ve been working on the last 10 years, especially since he, Jean Jacques and Renzo were the catalyst to it all.

When it was all said and done, Rickson, Joe and I took some pictures and just like that, he left. Whether or not Rickson was impressed with the rubber guard, doesn’t really matter, it wasn’t about that anyways, it was about picking his brain, getting them old legendary stories straight from him, hearing his philosophies on modern Mma and listening to him break down life, honor, courage, conformity and spirituality. God bless Rickson."

OK ... ready for the video? Enjoy!

Vunak's Top 50 Combat Secrets Ch. 25

Chapter 25 – Contemporary JKD’s Progression

As stated before in our previous articles, mixed martial arts has boiled down to really two arts, Thai boxing, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. And as mentioned before, we were aware of this revelation around 1985. And since that time, we have had plenty of years to devise ways to improve this Thai boxing – Brazilian jiu jitsu cocktail. Adding Kinamutai was our first priority. The single most important thing that we wanted to do, was defeat another person that also knows Thai boxing and Brazilian jiu jitsu, and happens to be bigger, stronger, younger, etc… Kinamutai filled this hole, next we found that by injecting Wing Chun, we were able to control the opponents center line, trap the opponents hands, and even apply follow up arts. Some of these follow up arts can include, but are not limited too, savate, dumog, tai-chi, etc…

When two people are trading blows, in a typical MMA fashion, and all of a sudden somebody enters with a Pac Sao, and the perhaps a Lop Sao, and then if they were to go to a double leg takedown, continuing the match on the ground, we would see a visceral response of most of the audience sitting up in their chair, extremely impressed, in deed this scenario has actually occurred once in the UFC.

Joe Rogan, perhaps the most sophisticated man on planet earth, when it comes to knowing fighters, was blown away by Vitor Belfort’s Straight Blast on Vanderlai Silva. In fact, Joe actually got up out of his chair, and declared at a very high decibels, did you see that he, “Wing Chuned him”.

Once this perfectly timed Wing Chun entry occurs, and you have Pac Saoed and Lop Saoed your opponent, controlling his center line, there is a brief window in which we can actually flow to the enigmatic but functional art of Tai Chi. Picture the opponents hands crossed, and you square up your body and sail him, straight across the octagon, or perhaps a street fight, sailing the opponent into a 65 Chevy. Now we have a contemporary JKD person, able too trade blows in the world of Thai boxing, able to trade counters in the world of jiu jitsu, yet also able to put more sophisticated and sublime arts in, that are more germane to the street, again weather these follow up arts are Wing Chun or Tai- Chi, or locking, or throwing, there main purpose, is to add to the potential degree, of violence, necessary to win the encounter.

Training Drill:

Step 1: Get your Thai boxing and jiu jitsu skills as high as possible.

Step 2: Integrate the Pac Sao as a Portal to enter.

Step 3: Make sure you can perform said Pac Sao on the retraction of any punch or kick.

Step 4: Trap the rear barrier (Wu Sao).

Step 5: Once the students are able to get all the way up to this final point, add the two basic Tai Chi shoves.

Step 6. Add Foot sweeps

Step 7: Add Dumog

Step 8 : Add Savate

Step 9: And now finally by step 9, we should see our students, looking very similar to two MMA cats sparring in the Octagon. They should be trading blows, not too dissimilar from Thai Boxing. Integrating Ground Fighting, integrating biting, indeed if we could for a moment, lets shut our eyes and picture this one combination.

Thai Kick – Pac Sao -Lap Sao - double leg takedown - ground and pound - sweep occurs from the bottom person - the sweeper comes to his feet, with a blitzing straight blast, and a Tai-Chi Sail into the Octagon, concluding with a knee strike.

In conclusion when one can seamlessly integrate, tai chi, locking, biting, with Thai boxing and jiu jitsu, they can fight out of their weight class by 70 pounds, when they are 70 years old.
