Known Faults: Last minute of “Me And The Boys” patched from Live In Rock City bootleg. 

Another excavation from the newly relocated JEMS Archive is not one but two masters of Thin Lizzy’s 1976 Ford Auditorium show, broadcast live on WABX in the Motor City. Jared lived in Detroit at the time and surely recorded one of the tapes himself. I presume he obtained the second master because his first cuts about five minutes early. His was a 60-minute cassette; the second is a 120. 

The broadcast is a well-traveled document of the band in the prime of their career, perhaps best known by the bootleg title Live In Rock City. That release utilized an off-air recording at least a couple generations removed from a master and suffers from FM noise issues perhaps related to station tuning. 

For this release, we composited the best of Jared’s two recordings, augmenting where needed to fill in gaps and upgrade particular songs. We also left some of the on-air deejay chatter intact which is missing on the bootleg. 

Jared’s cassette masters offer a material upgrade of the broadcast, though still not quite perfect. To my ears, overall sound quality improves a bit after the first couple of songs. If Live In Rock City was locked in 80% of the way, Jared’s is closer to 95% but still has a touch of noise on the margins and vocal sibilance that may have been there in the broadcast no matter what. However, the whole performance now sounds substantially better than the circulating version as you can hear in the samples below. I was also able to remove a considerable amount of the feedback in the opening track, “Jailbreak,” that’s in the broadcast; modern software makes it relatively easy to remove such defects. 

The only thing Jared’s tapes were missing was the very end of “Me And The Boys” which has been patched in from the Live In Rock City source. 

The 1976 'Jailbreak' tour was the epitome of a hard working band finally breaking out. It officially began on March 5th at Sheffield University headlining 29 shows in 31 days ending with a show at the New Victoria Theatre in London on April 4th. After a two week break, the band landed stateside hopscotching between headlining and supporting at least eight different bands (Aerosmith, The Tubes, Be Bop Deluxe, Journey, Rush, Golden Earring, Slade and Nazareth).

This comes from a boot CD that I got long ago on the Bondage Music label. I think I  got it in Japan on one of my three visits in the 90's, but I don't remember. While not a perfect mix, everything sounds pretty damn good. I do not know if the source of this was an FM broadcast, or if it's just a soundboard recording. Maybe somebody can shed some light on it's origins? I suspect it's an FM broadcast, with the commercials edited out. I have included scans of the artwork.

Notes:
From the original May 23, 1976 broadcast. Almost for sure not the entire concert, but the entire broadcast (edits made by WXRT can be heard). This has made the rounds as "The Irish Dawn Chicago". This also circulates with an April 16, 1976 date. Since I marked the cassette immediately after the broadcast and still had at that time a vivid memory of the show, I'm 99% certain that the April 21, 1976 date is the correct one. Be-Bop Deluxe were the opening act, and I also have the WXRT broadcast of their performance. I also recall that WXRT were hyping up the pairing of these two acts together in the weeks before the concert.

A very good show, with a few small flaws:
-I set up my tape machine on the wrong bias for the TDK-KR C60 tape initially, then made the switch about 1:20 in "Jailbreak". I made a small edit to correct for the equalization (see later notes).
-Tape flip at 4:08 of Rosalie
-Only one of the guitars can be heard in the mix until track 04; this was apparently a soundboard recording and apparently a correction was made on the board; as this is how it was broadcast I've made no changes.

I've also left in WXRT announcer's comments at the end for posterity, but these can be deleted by the downloader. This was UnConcert #131, by the way.

Edits:
-Small fade in to track 01
-To adjust for the wrong tape equalization setting, I used SoundForge graphic equalization for the first 1:20 of track 01, with the following settings:
+1.2 dB boost at 2kHz, +2.4 dB boost at 4kHz, +3.4 dB boost at 8kHz, +2.2 dB boost at 16kHz.
-edit at tape flip in track 07, less than .01 seconds removed to smooth the transition
-Small fade-out on track 12
No other edits made.

Trawled from the depths of the BBC Archive and classic BBC shows of the day - Old Grey Whistle Test, Top of the Pops and Full House - a collection of performance gems from a totally rock 'n' roll early 1970s. 
This was a golden era for British Rock 'n' Roll as everyone moved on from the whimsical 60s and looked around for something with a bit more oomph! In a pre- heavy metal world bands were experimenting with influences that dated back to 50s rock 'n' roll whilst taking their groove from old school rhythm and blues. It was also a time when men grew their hair long! 
In a celebration of this era we kick off with an early 1970s Badfinger number direct from the BBC library and continue the groove from the BBC vaults with classic rock 'n' roll heroes like Free, Status Quo, the Faces, Humble Pie and Mott the Hoople. Plus from deep within the BBC archives we dig out some rarities from the likes of Babe Ruth, Stone The Crows, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Man, Heavy Metal Kids and original rockers Thin Lizzy... to name but a few.

A romp through the BBC archive library from 1975 to 1979 has unearthed some seldom seen performances of the rarely-explored genre of pub rock and other late 70s rock 'n' roll gems from classic music programmes like the Old Grey Whistle Test and Top of the Pops. Before the DIY culture of punk took hold there was a whole breed of real musicians who honed their craft in the backrooms of pubs. And towards the end of the 70s men's hair was starting to get shorter too.
This compilation has uncovered rarely-seen footage from the likes of Canvey Island's Dr Feelgood, original pub rockers Ducks DeLuxe, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Elvis Costello, Meal Ticket, Steve Gibbons Band, Dave Edmunds and chum Nick Lowe, a pre-Mike & the Mechanics' Paul Carrack in his first band Ace, a post-Faces Ronnie Lane, the Motors, the first TV performance from Dire Straits, Graham Parker and the Rumour and many more.
