Review taken from Sinatraguide.com
This legitimate (?) release is one of the first full concerts of the Rat Pack that ever made it to CD. A trimmed-down version was released by Artanis Entertainment, but this is the only set that contains the full, nearly 104 minute show. Currently available as part of a CD/DVD combo Live and Swingin', this pair of CD's is nonetheless an important document of the Rat Pack in action. First off, if you've never heard a show by the Rat Pack, then it's an experience where you leave feeling like you had to be there. Some of the jokes are purely physical, so that the laughs of the audience and the stars are incomprehensible to the listener. Also, the humor is very topical, from Sinatra: "Shut up, Sam, and sit in the back of the bus!" Davis: "Jewish people don't sit in the back of the bus!" Sinatra: "Jewish people own the bus!" - to Dean's trademark drunken humor, much of the time the audience is laughing only because they're drunk themselves. Nevertheless, the affection that these three friends have for one another is palpable, and even if the skits aren't as off-the-cuff as they seem, it still sounds like they're having a great time. Vocally, Sammy comes off the best, with burn-down-the-house renditions of "What Kind Of Fool Am I?" and "Birth Of The Blues" - Frank on the other hand, seems much more casual in his numbers,  almost throwing away songs like "Goody Goody" and "Please Be Kind." Not that it's a bad performance, but it sounds uninvolved. Dean is also very funny, slurring his words, and letting loose with cunning malapropisms every chance he gets. We also get to hear Sammy's infamous impersonations, although again, the sketch suffers from not being able to see his performance. If you can find these discs, I consider them superior to the Summit recording due to their completeness and perfectly clear sound.

Notes:
This concert bootleg is hard to find and pricey, but it will hold plenty of interest for die-hard Frank Sinatra fans. Backed by a full orchestra, Sinatra is in excellent voice and the song selection is first-rate, with the exception of the "mod" "Goin' Out of My Head," which suits the singer about as well as love beads and platform shoes. The concert contained on this disc was a big Democratic Party fundraiser, and it was very rare for Sinatra (or any other performer) to do stadium shows at this time. Sadly, such massive concerts would become Sinatra's main musical activity throughout the '70s and '80s. Since this concert was a fundraiser for a Democratic candidate, the bootleg also includes Sinatra's reworking of "High Hopes" for Robert Kennedy's presidential campaign as a bonus.

Let me start by saying this is a SBD Master. I love Frank and was very excited to have tracked this down. About 10 years ago I met a guy I was going to by some electronics from. After talking for a while, he told me he worked sound at many of the theaters in Chicago. He told me he (and some other folk) recorded a bunch of shows including, crooners, broadway and comedy etc. Needless to say I am now have them in my possession and will begin start transferring many of these masters to digital. Some are on cassette, others from the 90's are on Mini-Disc masters. Bumping into this guy was a very random and serendipitous event.

It took a lot of research to find the correct date for this show. In May of 1984, Frank played 5 shows at the Arie Crown Theater in Chicago. (It's located inside the McCormick Place Convention Center along the lake front). Based on the setlist and a few comments by Frank, this is the May 11th show.

Now it's time to listen to the Chairman of The Board. So turn it up and "Make it one more for my baby, and one more for the road".

This is great stuff taken from kinescopes* of the TV variety show which was broadcast live each week on CBS. Quality is very good considering the era. Enjoyable black & white. Never issued commercially anywhere. Thanks to K Rob for the VHS tape.

*A kinescope is a recording of a television program made by filming the picture from a TV monitor's CRT (or "kinescope" in its original meaning). Alternatively, it can refer to the equipment used for this procedure: basically a 16 mm or 35 mm movie camera mounted in front of a TV monitor, specially synchronized to the monitor's scanning rate.
