Recorded live at Ebbet's Field in Denver, Colorado on July 8th, 1974. An incredible find and a great sounding radio broadcast on KVPI 105.9FM. Taken from the original reel-to-reel tapes used the broadcast the concerts. Captures Bob a bit over a year before he finally found success. Any and all Seger fans should have this show! Sound quality is EX+.

*about the SQ of track 6. (jandanfan explanation) Indeed - it looks like the speed is changing a lot. IMHO the speed variations are only heard in the organ parts.(at 0:15;1:00;1:36..). If you listen clearly - the pitch of bob's voice and the guitar (in the right channel) - drums etc doesn't change. I think it's a little joke of the organplayer who fiddled around with his knobs.

Notes:
This is the same show as "Retro Rock" however this has the songs in the right order and no fake audience pumped in. You can tell from the between song banter. It's a true killer - one of my early DIME finds. This is from the cdr I burned from my Dime download - the files were no longer on my computer. Wildly esoteric setlist here and the performance is dyn-o-mite. You can hear a bit of lp noise between tracks like before Turn The page - it is pretty much of a non-issue though.

Notes:
There are a lot of issues with this recording..
Disc one... I just have to keep my hands off he controls sometimes... there are a few drop outs from the Maranz source..
Disc two is fairly good... with only a few issues from the mixing board, which was beyond my control... most are very subtle and you won't notice them.
Source #2 is just god aweful... !!.. but I needed a stereo recording to matrix with.. and this is all that surfaced. a lot of obnoxious talking, and there is a low end distortion at times.
Source #3 added some nice lower end.. a few issues with surrounding fans... a 30 second -
I removed just about all of it, thankfully between songs, and Bob's banter.
Matrix - Source #1 is the main feed.. about 70-80% of the mix. Source #2 was used primarily to add some ambiance... at about 10-20%. Source #3 about a 20-30% mix.

Recorded from section 101 beside the stage on Bob's left. This was my first time seeing Bob. He's one of those artists that radio ruined for me from being played constantly. When he toured a couple of years ago I thought he's someone I should really see. This show just flew by in a hurry. It seemed like the show just started when I realized they'd been onstage for 30 minutes already. Bob sounds great and seems to really enjoy performing. Enjoy!

Original seeder's comments:
Alto Reed was not a touring member of The Silver Bullet Band at the time of these recordings. Broadcast was compiled from 2 prior broadcasts from 1974. The broadcast was sometime in the 1990's. The bootleg was sourced from vinyl there are some pops present but not distracting. I did run a passive pop/click fix with Goldwave. I bought this CDR bootleg at a small used CD store for $4.00. There was only a printed insert with a track list. I ripped the wav files with EAC to run the pop fix and convert to mp3. I had just installed Trader's Little Helper so I ran a check on the wav files and they came up 100% CDDA so I encoded to flac level 8 instead.

This is a great early Seger show with emphasis on his blues roots. There are 4 songs in the set Bob never recorded: J.J. Cale's "Bringing It Back From Mexico", Hound Dog Taylor's "See Me In The Evening", Albert King's "Don't Burn Down The Bridge" and the Bob Seger original "Full Circle".

Comments:
Solid performance by veteran rocker Bob Seger in the Chicago stop of his current tour. I had never seen him before, and I must say that I was impressed with his showmanship and the quality of his vocals. Although he certainly *looked* his 68 years of age, his voice sounded exactly like he did in his late 1970s/early 1980s heyday.

The setlist was a hit factory, with virtually everything drawn from the early 1970s with a sprinkling of his '80s hits and a handful of current tunes. He introduced "Like a Rock," for audience members who were less than 26 years old, as a song he hadn't performed live during their lifetimes; I'm not sure if this was a tour debut, but it sounded great and inspired me to go out and buy a Chevy truck. A highlight, for me, was the cover of Wilco & Billy Bragg's "California Stars" -- though interestingly enough, he didn't seem to be aware that a local band was involved in the recording (he alluded to the fact that the lyrics were written by Woody Guthrie, but didn't reference Wilco at all). He does a credible version of the song, though I prefer the "original" version by Wilco.

In terms of sound quality, I was a little too close to the stage to catch the full effect of the overhead PA, and needed to improve upon the high and low ends using Audio Cleaning Lab. Overall, this is a very clear recording but lacking "punch"; I was fortunate in that there wasn't any crowd interference close to my mics, but there were a couple guys nearby chatting throughout the show that can be heard in the background at quieter points of the show. Overall, this is a very listenable, enjoyable recording, but I'm sure there will be better documents that surface eventually from this tour.

Download if you're even a casual fan who's curious about the current tour, and don't forget to buy his studio and live releases.

There are no fades on this file set, so the CD breaks (for those who still burn to CD) are merely a suggestion - you can split discs wherever you want.
