Animals…According to Nick
In 2004, the Pink Floyd fan community was treated to a new insight into the band by the release of the book Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd by drummer Nick Mason. This lengthy volume recounts the most memorable events for the band from his perspective. In preparing this 1977 Munich recording for release, we felt it would be helpful to review Nick Mason’s comments on the 1977 era and summarize them here. As you will see below, the stop in Munich had a particular significance for him and was worthy of a specific comment in his book.
Nick begins his chapter on the Animals era by noting that the band decided to buy a building at 35 Britannia Row in Islington for their own studio. It was used well into the Wall era and had a number of advantages for the band. The site was conveniently located; in fact, Roger Waters lived less than a block away. The equipment could be stored there and the band could work in studio at any time. They even had an old friend from the Regent Street Polytechnic named Jon Corpe help with the design of the studio. The composite materials used in the studio construction made it look like “a ****ing prison” according to Roger Waters but the sound characteristics were ideal and allowed a very satisfactory recording of the album Animals.
According to Nick, the album Animals was relatively easy to put together. The song Sheep was just a re-working of the 1975 tour song Raving and Drooling while Dogs existed previously as You Gotta Be Crazy. Transitioning these works into the theme of the Animals album left little more to be written. With the acquisition of Britannia Row and the ease with which the Animals album was written and recorded, Nick felt that the band was working better and more cohesively that in the past. Sadly, the tensions would re-emerge as they set out on tour. For the Animals tour, Snowy White was hired as a supportive musician and played many different segments of the music on stage. For example, he was charged with playing the bass introduction to the song Sheep. According to Mason, this often confused audiences as Snowy was the first band member on stage for this opening number and fans did not know who he was.
The Animals tour was described by Nick as the first “branded” tour, specifically designed to promote a specific album and Pink Floyd members underestimated their promoter’s enthusiasm for the “animals” motif. When they arrived in Munich, Germany, the promoter Marcel Avram presented them with a small live piglet. The Floyd tour manager Warwick McCredie was given responsibility for the little animal during their stay. Unfortunately, letting him run around the hotel room all night turned out not to be the wisest decision. The following morning the band was faced with broken glass and pig excrement, everywhere. No doubt, the band was pleased to leave Munich as quickly as possible.
One of the more significant aspects of the 1977 Animals tour was the greater use of stadiums as a venue for the shows. These much larger venues presented certain problems for the band. Pink Floyd did not like to use warm-up acts for its shows. Given that it can take many hours to fill a large stadium like Soldier’s Field in Chicago or Alameda Coliseum in Oakland, fans can get restless and tended to pass the time with drugs and alcohol. By the time Pink Floyd came on stage, many in the audience were well on their way towards oblivion. This scene was played out many times on this tour, culminating in the Roger Waters spitting incident in Montreal during the final performance. By the end of the tour, the stadium scene, the intrusion of business men, financial obligations and general tension lead to a low point in the history of Pink Floyd. David Gilmour even commented to Nick Mason that Pink Floyd “may be done”. For many reasons, this was a good time to take a break. David Gilmour and Richard Wright each went off to produce solo albums while Roger Waters reflected on his own experiences on the Animals tour. Of course, the result of this reflection was, The Wall.
This Munich recording is very special. The equipment used must have been outstanding for the time because the detail and clarity are amazing. With the tour less than one month old, Nick Mason comments that the performances of the time were a bit rough. However, listening to this performance we hope that you agree that all the material is played very well. In our view, this is one of the finest Animals tour recordings available. We hope that, through the remastering process, we have helped to improve it a little for a great listening experience.

Notes from the Re-Master
We started with a SHN CD copy of the master tapes of this recording. The most obvious problem found was a severely damaged right channel. Through an extensive, manual process this right channel was repaired as well as possible. Dropouts also needed extensive repair. Because of the inconsistency of the Right channel, multiple noise reduction techniques were needed to reduce intermittent clicks, pops and hiss. As usual with 1977 PF shows, the harsh Gilmour guitar and other tonality excesses needed to be addressed. Static and Dynamic filtering were used to adjust the tonality and bring it back in line. Each set was speed checked and speed corrected by comparing the show with studio and other live references. Dynamics were also adjusted to enhance the listening experience. Finally, though complete, this show required 5 patches. Four came from source 1 of the 1/27/77 Frankfurt performance and merge well with this show. The fifth, needed for the song Sheep, was from source 2 of the Frankfurt event. Multiple sources were considered as sources for patches including Fort Worth, Oakland, Berlin SB, Paris and Cleveland. None had the quality and clarity of this Munich show except source 1 of Frankfurt. Because Frankfurt source 1 is missing most of Sheep, source two for that date was needed for the Sheep patch. The show was then balanced and re-tracked.

This tape was given to me by the taper and at the time the exact date was not given to me. Based on the Brain Damage site, it is from the February 27th show. This is based on the "Run Like Hill" intro:

Wednesday 27th February 1980
Roger: "Thank you. Do you like our pig? He's not a very nice pig, but he's a BIG pig! There's more to our pig than meets the eye. So home pig, go on, fuck off! Puffed up, overblown, pork eyed garlic fat thing, go on, go. This tune I'd like to dedicate to all the paranoid folk in the audience tonight, of whom I'm sure there are many. It's called Run Like Hell."

Other Notes:
This is my first attempt at a "remaster". I am not a miracle worker and the quality of the source tape prevents major improvements in the overall quality. Audio has four major gaps of silence. These appear on every source I've seen from this show. Video is very dark. Most of set two is hard to see because of the issues in the original taping of the show. Use of Temporal Smoother removed most video niose but can have a blurring effect. This is the "lesser of two evils" in my opinion.

***Neonknight's Notes***
This newly discovered stereo recording captures the atmosphere of the concert really well and must have been taped using high quality equipment (I would guess chrome tapes and a Nakamichi). The sound is consistently warm, dynamic and detailed - basically all you could hope for from an audience recording of a Wall concert from this era.

Kbrubaker kindly sent me his cassettes for transferring and sharing with the community. He received them through a trade in 1980. They were not marked as low. We have decided they must be because of their age and sound quality.

The music is spread across the 4 TDK SA60 sides as follows:

01 SideA - Introduction -> Mother
02 SideB - Goodbye Blue Sky -> Goodbye Cruel World
03 SideC - Hey You -> The Show Must Go On
04 SideD - The Show Must Go On -> Outside The Wall

The left channel on the cassettes is generally weaker than the right and I addressed this using the Saffire's analogue pre-amps. "Unreal" shouts a guy near the taper, clearly moved by the conclusion to Comfortably Numb. Listening to this you can really appreciate what he meant.

***Littlepieces' Mastering Notes***

A very nice stereo recording with a warm and powerful low end and very smooth signal quality. It is slightly subdued in the upper half but if you add ~2dB between ~1kHz and ~8kHz in your player or head unit it opens up nicely.

Removed two repeated segments and spliced together and adjusted the gain to smooth the transition. Made a few other modest gain adjustments to balance the levels.

When removing the 1st repeated segment and splicing together SideA and SideB, I noticed that even though the two sections are repeated when they were copied from the source, SideB's left channel was much lower than the right for 10-15s before the level returned to normal. Given this is the same source tape, seems like a person must have changed the levels on the left channel after he flipped the tape before eventually correcting the level. So I adjusted the gain on this segment to smooth the transition between SideA and SideB.

Also, the SQ between SideA and SideB is slightly different. Given KBs tapes are the same type, it seems possibly two different type tapes were used in a past dub. It's apparent when moving from one to the other that the high end output isn't quite as high and doesn't extend quite as far. The signal quality of SideB is still very strong and smooth, its just an obvious change like a HQ metal vs normal bias tape.

Mother has some unusual and very loud artifacts from 20:49-21:25 (36s). The first half of this section sounds more like mic connect problems but the second half of this section sounds like changes between settings. If they are changes between settings, then this may indicate a dubbing issue not an issue at the venue.

To address these very harsh artifacts in Mother, I did a spectral cleaning of this section. It wasn't intended to transform the really bad sections to perfection since obviously most of the artifacts in this section are well beyond recovering what was once underneath them. A few were removed successfully, some were removed leaving a mild artifact, and some were removed leaving a significant artifact, but smooth, not the previous ear damaging one. So now from 20:49-21:25 (36s) of Mother doesn't make you want to cover your ears or run for your head unit. Check out the raw 24bit/96kHz version if you want to know what it sounded like.

Another interesting artifact is that until 19:12m there is a very high carrier signal at ~15.8 khZ, about 30dB above the content signal. Carrier signals are rarely this high. When it disappears at 19:12m, you can hear a subtle change with the SQ becoming slightly more open or uncovered.

The speed was close enough so I decided not to subject it to a resample.

**Explanation**
The reason there is only a 16bit/44kHz corrected version and no 24bit/96kHz corrected version is due to my partitions mysteriously disappearing on two external HDs simultaneously last July. I had exported the 1644 version and sent it to Neon just prior to the HDs failing, but had not sent the 2496 version. I was able to restore the partition on the less important drive but not the drive with all my work. I lost a lot of other work as well.

**Notes On Recorder**
Based on the announcement and reference to Jones beach and being too cold as well as the couple of guitar tunings during the announcements this appears to be the 26th.

Based on the audience artifacts during the intro and before and during the beginning of ITF and the lack of recording/mic disturbances during Mother on the other 2 recorders among other things, this appears to be a new recorder for the 26th.

Charade represents the first silver release of the complete February 25th, 1977 Pavillion de Paris show on Pink Floyd’s Animals tour. Three previous silver titles released in the nineties featured the second half of the show, the songs from Wish You Were Here.

Shine On (Black Cat Records BC 25) released in 1992 from Australia ran about 5% too fast and was sourced from a high generation copy of the tape. Live Volume 2 (Joker Productions JOK-013-B) is another Australian release that is probably a remaster of Shine On.

“Shine On You Crazy Diamond (1-5)” fades out early and there are gaps between the songs, but has been described by collectors as “listenable.” Finally Paris 1977 (The Screaming Abdabs 091-014) is another release of the second half of the show on silver with the same issues as the others.

In the ensuing decade a lower generation copy of the show surfaced that offers the first half of the show and improved sound quality but missing “Have A Cigar” and “Wish You Were Here.”
Charade uses an alternate tape to fill in the gaps to complete the show.

The sound quality is very good and clear with the emphasis on the higher frequencies. It lacks the dynamic live sound and bottom end of Funhouse on Siréne, which documents the opening show from this set. It does however capture the same spooky atmosphere. The Parisian audiences were much m more quiet and respectful to the musicians.

The American shows the following summer would be a different story with many good tapes ruined by drunken morons yelling over the tape. There are minor distortion issues and slight channel drops during the first half of “Sheep,” but the tape clears up nicely and the rest of the Animals material is excellently recorded.

At this point Floyd had been touring for a month with the new material and already developed a tight presentation. The tape captures very well the Psalm 23 section of the first song which on many tapes is buried in the mix. “Dogs” has a tremendous about of bite (no pun intended) and the audience like the barking dogs in the middle.

“Pigs (Three Different Ones)” builds to a tremendous climax.
At 11:57 Waters shouts out “SIX….ONE” to indicate this is the sixteenth show of the world tour.
Of all the songs in the set, this one is the most recently written and one gets the impression that, as Gilmour is spitting
out these angry metallic riffs, that the audience is sitting there with mouths open in astonishment.

The second half of the show featuring the Wish You Were Here material is more well known. The sound becomes slightly more fuzzy during “Shine On You Crazy Diamond Parts 1-5,” but the playing again is very aggressive and Dick Parry’s saxophone squeaks a bit. What is somewhat noticable in the first half, but becomes more apparent in the second is that this is definitely a David Gilmour concert.

Despite the show being tightly choreographed to fit the visuals on the screen, Gilmour takes every opportunity to produce unique solos, riffs, and throwaway riffs to make this show all his own. Charade is packaged in a double slimline jewel case with dull finish paper inserts, limited to two hundred copies.

This is a fabulous audience recording of the last of 4 consecutive nights in Paris during the In The Flesh 1977 tour. These Parisian concerts were performed at the Pavillon de Paris, which was a concert hall built at the place of an ancient slaughterhouse ("abattoirs de la Villette" in French). The idea to bring the Animals Tour at a slaughterhouse is kind of ironic, hence the title of this release.

An excellent 1st gen tape provided by Finkployd49 was transferred by Neonknight in 2011, and the present Harvested release is a remastered version of this 1st gen tape transfer.

The remastering addressed mainly 3 aspects. First, on the rough transfer the speed was not consistent, the pitch increasing slightly as the show progressed. The speed of the first part of the Animals set is correct but it begins to accelerate during Dogs resulting in a 1.7% increase at the end of Pigs. A similar accelerating effect occurs for the second set, with 1.2% correction needed at the beginning of SOYCD 1-5 and 2% correction at the end of SOYCD 6-9. During Money, the acceleration is even more obvious where the first verse is 2% too fast and the last verse is 3% too fast. These speed fluctuations can be explained by batteries slowly losing power during the taping of the show. The present remaster corrects all of these speed issues.

Another aspect was the raw sound of the original transfer with some annoying saturation of particular frequencies during the loud parts and a kind of "narrow" spectrum due to prominent medium. Careful EQ was applied in order to reduce the annoying frequencies, and to let the music breathe more with a "fuller" sound. For instance, the depth of Roger's bass can be heard in its full glory on this remaster. Another example is the barking interlude in the middle of Dogs where the bass drum kicks now sound as they were likely to sound in the Pavillon that night.

Last but not least, the original recording was plagued with hundreds of mic bumps, probably caused by GD (the taper) moving during the show and touching his microphones. Every bump was carefully eliminated or attenuated manually in order to appreciate the music without these disturbances. This was the biggest challenge for this remaster, since it took dozens of hours to get rid of these mic bumps.

Other restoration work during this remastering process was to correct some tape drop-outs here and there, adjusting the levels of each channel and creating continuity (avoiding the cut due to tape flip) between Pigs On the Wing Pt.2 and Pigs, and between Welcome To the Machine and Have A Cigar. There was no NR applied for this remaster.

In regards to the performance this show is a real killer, with the band very inspired and tighter than during the last weeks of the U.S. tour (just listen to the Oakland show from May 9, or the Madison Square Garden concert from July 2, where the sound quality is fantastic but the performance is erratic at times). Also, the European audience was very polite and did not impose itself on the recording, unlike - again - the Oakland or the Madison Square Garden shows.

New recorder.
Not a perfect sound, it's far, but listenable.
And always funny find this new recorder after years.
I always hope that a better source appear, I found it in a old cassette, from trader, and I'm sure that someone have.

Tape labeled: 1977 February 24 - Pavillion de Paris, Paris, France
Generation: Original 1st geneation cassette label = TDK SA-90x1+SA60x1
Transferred by me in November 2005 from borrowed cassette tapes with
many thanks to G.G.!
My playback deck = TEAC W-860R
My audio card = Sound Blaster Live, recorded into HD via Cool Edit Pro

Tape One, Side A: Disc One tracks
Tape One, Side B: Disc Two through to the beginning of
'Wish You Were Here'
Tape Two, Side A: Disc Two remaining tracks

Comments: From Recorder #1 of the gig, this is from a different first generation copy than my other version. Sound quality is very comparable although this has slightly more defined highs (very little difference in sound quality anyway, I should not even mention it). The cuts are the same as on the other source of the master too. Actually, there's something less...the little part of soundscape at the beginning of 'Wish You Were Here' was "lost" with the tape copy. Waters says "15" on 'Pigs (Three Different Ones)', second verse at 5:09.

Taken from a direct rip of the original vinyl, here is a great early version of The Dark Side Of The Moon album as recorded by the BBC from the Rainbow in London. Sound is pristine. Pretty much well circulated Roio among the floyd community but in case you missed this one now it's the time! Some debate whatever this comes from the 17th or the 20th.

This show was mixed live in quadraphonic (4.0 surround), captured by 3 strategically located tapers and mastered in 5.1 surround sound. This is the actual surround mix as heard at the show with nothing simulated or remixed.

Recorder 1:
is closest to the stage and to the left. Stereo with 1 mic aimed at the stage and the other aimed at the left surround speaker stack.

Recorder 2:
is closer to the right surround stack than the stage.

Recorder 3:
is in the back directly in front of the rear surround speaker stack.

Sources:
Recorder 1
title: Zurich Master Speedcorrected (Recorder 1), source: cass(master) > cdr(?), stereo
Lineage is missing speed correction info.

Recorder 2
title: Zurich rec2/gen1, source: cass[1]>DAT[1]>CDR[2], mono but with stereo cassette transfer artifacts

Recorder 3
Dsto0-Pacco stereo master (BASF CrO2) > Nakamichi ZX-7 > Tascam HDP2 > 24 bit 96KHz wav

5.1 Master:
Protools HD2 for mastering
Serato Pitch n' Time plugin used for speed correction.
WAV -> MLP compression (SurCode MLP) -> DVDA disc image (DiscWelder Chrome)
DVDA is 24 bit 96KHz 5.1 surround sound
Sound quality: A- (Half of Dogs thru Pigs is B-)

General notes:
This project started when I first heard the 3rd recorder that Pacco posted. It was the most distant sounding recording possible punctuated with the most upfront bursts of tape effects and bits of solos that would suddenly fade up from the distance and back again. Obviously a recording from the back of the room and directly in front of the rear surround speaker stack. The 1st digital transfer of this was poor (distorted & mono). Neonknight was able to arrange a professional transfer of Pacco's tape and this project was on.

Tape Notes:
Recorder 1
This is well recorded and the creative mic positioning worked well. The louder parts and louder guitar leads start to distort the mics and/or tape. This copy has been digitized at only 16 bit, 44.1KHz and had further processing done (digital speed correction and possibly more) at that lower resolution. This exaggerates the distortion and makes for piercing painful listening. There are also artifacts from CD disc errors.

Recorder 2
This is poorly recorded. It is distant enough to be challenging in the first place. The recording is low fidelity with almost no capture of cymbals and other higher frequency details. There are wild speed fluctuations from a failing tape drive. This was digitized at 16 bit, 44.1KHz which does a poor job capturing the remains of sound quality this buried.

Recorder 3
This is well recorded and professionally digitized at 24 bit, 96KHz. You might have to study it for a moment to realize that because it's a recording of the very back of the venue. This captured the ambient sound along with a very discreet recording of the real surround speaker stack. The loudest parts distort the mic/tape a little or maybe the level was set too high for the direct surround parts which were quite loud compared to the ambience here in the back.

All 3 tapes are incomplete and rec1 is missing the entire 2nd half of the 1st set. Rec3 is missing the encore. The performance is complete between all 3 recorders.

Mastering Notes:
The Serato Pitch n' Time plugin was used for speed adjustment in syncing these multiple sources together. This is the 1st digital speed/pitch adjustment to come along that is transparent, artifact free and sample accurate and is the core technology that made this project possible. The goal for positioning the sources in the speakers was to keep the source tracks in discreet speakers when possible while trying to arrange them to the correct perspective from the show. If the sync between sources was theoretically perfect there would be no harm from imaging the sources in any combination of speakers. These sources are synced together with a high degree of accuracy but are not theoretically perfect as the quality of the recordings and the current technology available to me simply doesn't allow 100% perfection. Keeping the different sources in separate speakers eliminates the possibility of any of the phase anomalies that could come up by the added complexity of mixing the sources together. Fortunately these sources fall into position very nicely in separate speakers. L - rec1(R), C - rec1(L), R - rec2(L*), Ls - rec3(L), Rs - rec3(R). *The L channel was best till the very end of HAC where it's overdriven for the remainder. The R channel was best for the rest. Recorder 1 was the sync reference for most of the show. Since this source was already digitally speed corrected accurately enough there was no reason to subject it to further digital speed processing. I kept rec3 in 24/96 and upsampled rec1 and rec2 from 16/44.1 to 24/96. There are a number of reasons for this choice with the ultimate goal being to preserve the integrity of the sources and present this master in a standardized format. Working with rec1 and rec2 in 24/96 allowed some necessary digital restoration work with a higher degree of precision than is possible at 16/44.1 (even though they were only recorded at 16/44.1). Keeping the master at 24/96 then insures no further harm however small from lossy digital compression techniques (eg. downsampling, bit reduction) and allows for lower dynamic levels to be accurately preserved without sacrificing the bit depth of the source.
Analog tape machines at their best have a lot of speed variation, much of which is imperceptible unless you look at it under a microscope. Sync reference points (ie. identical points in time in all 3 tapes) had to be identified on average every 2 to 8 seconds. In other words you could not use the same speed correction factor for more than 2 to 8 seconds at a time throughout the show. Recorder 2 had some wild speed fluctuations that were impossible to perfectly repair. The accuracy is very high but I expect there are a few slips that got past me.
Recorder 1 was very saturated at 5KHz. The louder the band and/or lead guitar, the more saturated this frequency band got. I attenuated this with dynamic eqing with the Universal Audio precision multiband compressor and manual automation. I was able to get a little high end balance back in recorder 2 so it didn't sound so unnatural (UA precision eq). I made one exception to the discreet source/speaker rule here and added some of the highest frequency band from rec1 (Lf) to rec2's channel (Rf) to help better center the image in front (so the cymbals aren't way over to the left). Rec2 had a lot of tape hiss that I reduced with broadband dynamic noise reduction. Rec3 was in good shape. The bass end was a little weak overall so instead of turning everything else down to make room I put the range I wanted to boost in the lfe channel.
Short dropouts in any recorder were edited/fixed with whatever manor of cheating was needed to authentically restore the spot in question. Imperfections in sound were kept whenever authentic repairs were not possible. Epic smacks of microphones and any loud claps and screams made inches from the mics have been edited out. When the recording is presented in full form, these sounds are no longer 'authentic' sounding but end up being exaggeratedly loud (like someone suddenly screaming full force right into your ear).
The goal was to present the music authentically as heard that night. The focus here is on the music of Pink Floyd as captured by the recorders and not on any audible non-PF events (eg. mic noises, screams, talking) happening to or around the recorders. Any sonic enhancements are limited to what can be done with no adverse effects. Most of the work was to smooth over the many distracting spots where one of the 3 tapes drops out.

Disclaimers:
Don't even consider selling this. This is a fan made recording of copyright material made for free trade among fans. And if you're one of those roio "labels" that, swear to Floyd, never sell anything but then grab only the reduced CD version (instead of the high res) to 'reissue', writing up new notes that omit all lineage and mastering info but claim 'new transfer' and 'best sounding' and read like a used car salesman script… Honestly, what's up with that?

A multichannel 5.1 home theater system with either a DVD player that plays DVD Audio or a computer and audio interface setup is required for playback of 5.1 surround sound.

Please do not convert to lossy formats like standard DTS, Dolby or MP3 to redistribute. Someone down the line will thank you.
If you want to transfer this to DTS HD Master Audio (the new lossless format) or Blu-ray lossless audio, please make sure the transfer is perfectly lossless and remains in discreet 5.1.
