Note:
These are the raw recordings before editing and adding station id's etc. In other words, these are the tapes before the broadcast version was put together, and NOT the Pre-FM LP or CD media that was used for the final broadcast. Maybe they should be called the PRE-Pre-FM masters! In some cases, a song will start and then suddenly stop and restart and that is on the original master reels (and these promo cassettes) and not a defect or mistake. These breaks, usually happening at the 30 min. mark or thereabouts, indicate that multiple reels were used to capture the entire concert. The original track edits with the reel break are included here although this fileset has now been edited to play straight through uninterupted.

Here we have a BBC broadcast of Nick Lowe at the Paris theater in London in 1984. This was a bit of a project and I had to do some searching to find the best and most complete copies. I originally had a 35 minute high generation cassette which I started with but I scrapped it. So I went searching for a better copy. I found two different versions. Among the two versions the best copy was missing three songs. This comes from an unknown lineage to CD.

The second copy I had contained the 3 missing songs. but in lesser quality, also from an unknown generational cassette. Those 3 additional songs have been placed in the proper sequence and pieced together smoothly with no transitional cuts. Those tracks are numbers 1, 5, 16. We now have a total of 17 songs at just under 60 minutes.

On a side note I did find 3 songs from a pre-FM copy that’s on YouTube that actually sounds the best. So if anybody has the pre-FM version, could you please share it.

Elvis Costello and Friends - 1989-04-24 - Sweetwater, Mill Valley, CA (2xDVDfull pro-shot)

(2xDVDfull pro-shot)

"Elvis Costello and Friends"

featuring
Jerry Garcia
James Burton
Nick Lowe
Bob Weir
Kim Wilson
Charles Brown
Commander Cody
Sammy Hagar
Annie Sampson
Austin deLone
and many others!

Lineage:
Two TDK HD-XPro T-120 VHS tapes. There are a few video breaks for approximately 20 seconds each which were replaced with color bars. The audio is seamless with the first half from the VHS Hi-Fi soundtrack and the rest from a Dat master. A few seconds have been spliced in from an alternate downloaded soundboard source. Since all the breaks start between songs, very little of the music is missing as the video master changed tapes.

Transfer:
Sony WV-DR7 > Sony DVMC-DA2 Media Converter (DV Hardware Codec Converter) > Final Cut Pro (capture, filter to remove head switch jitter on bottom of screen, minor "nip and tuck" edits) > Compressor > DVD Studio Pro (chaptering, menu & DVD authoring) > VIDEO_TS file set.

Dat transfer (for audio from Charles Brown songs to end of show): Panasonic SV-3700 (S/PDIF coax/RCA output) > Macintosh with Digidesign Audiomedia III card > Pro Tools.

Audio post-capture Pro Tools processing: normalization, few clicks manually removed. No noise reduction or equalization. Audio placed back into Final Cut Pro before Compressor down-sampling.

Video:
MPEG-2 NTSC 720x480 4:3 29.97 fps, VBR 7.7 Mbps peak, 6.2 Mbps average data rate, 2-pass lower field first.

Audio:
Dolby Digital 2/0 (L,R), 48 kHz sample rate, 448 kbps data rate.

Village Music was a little record store in Mill Valley California and its owner, John Goddard, threw a lot of great anniversary parties at the tiny nearby club, The Sweetwater. This show is full of cool one-of-a-kind performances. It's the complete show from VHS tapes that are labeled "dubbing masters" and is an upgrade over what has previously circulated of this show. The stage was well lit for the video and the cameras are mostly steady. There was a lot of flash photography that washes out frames here and there, but it's mostly problem free and quite enjoyable. There was some silent backstage footage at the end of the first VHS tape that is included at the end of the second DVD. I attempted to list the lineups for each song but since there are so many changes there might be minor errors. I could've fit this on one DVD9 disc but not at maximum video quality so it's only being shared in this two single-layer DVD set.

Finally, from a blog I found online about this show:
"Elvis: Certainly a candidate for the world's greatest record store is Village Music, in Mill Valley. Every year John Goddard has a party for his friends and customers, and he always has a really good bill of people. So on the twenty-first anniversary, I did a show with Nick Lowe, and he invited James Burton and Jerry Scheff, who'd played with me on the road. I did my little set, Nick did his set and then it was a free-for-all; Charles Brown did a piece, and people were getting summoned to the stage. I was standing in the corridor when I suddenly heard, "Jerry Garcia to the stage!" And, emboldened by several margaritas, I decided to join him.

Jerry: Not only that, but it was one of those situations where I had the choice of playing either Elvis' guitar, which is low and it's stiff, and the strings are quite wide as well, and all this confusing script, or of playing Burton's guitar, which is strung with spider webs. I mean it's the absolutely lightest you can string a guitar and still get a sound out of it. I'd take Burton's and play a note on it and it goes "spack." So I opted to play Elvis' guitar as the lesser of two evils. [*laughter*] And I vowed I would never go to another one of those shows without my own.

Elvis: It was a whole Three Stooges routine -- "Here, you take my guitar," "No, I'll take your guitar." I think I had Burton's old Telecaster for half a song, and James had my old Martin acoustic which wasn't cranked up so he couldn't solo--and Jerry's struggling with my guitar. But once everybody got settled we managed to struggle through a couple of Hank Williams songs. Like any sort of jam thing it inevitably came to degenerate towards lots of blues. But we managed a few songs with changes.

Jerry: A pretty high level of jam-sessionry really, considering what it was. Really fun. And Elvis' solo set was phenomenal, I thought. That's one of those things that I can't do at all, just playing the guitar and singing. You're so solid with that, you don't miss a band. I always feel like I'm missing a band."

Some words from the BBC:
Trawled from the depths of the BBC Archive and classic BBC shows of the day - Old Grey Whistle Test, Top of the Pops and Full House - a collection of performance gems from a totally rock 'n' roll early 1970s.
This was a golden era for British Rock 'n' Roll as everyone moved on from the whimsical 60s and looked around for something with a bit more oomph! In a pre- heavy metal world bands were experimenting with influences that dated back to 50s rock 'n' roll whilst taking their groove from old school rhythm and blues. It was also a time when men grew their hair long!
In a celebration of this era we kick off with an early 1970s Badfinger number direct from the BBC library and continue the groove from the BBC vaults with classic rock 'n' roll heroes like Free, Status Quo, the Faces, Humble Pie and Mott the Hoople. Plus from deep within the BBC archives we dig out some rarities from the likes of Babe Ruth, Stone The Crows, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Man, Heavy Metal Kids and original rockers Thin Lizzy... to name but a few.
Sit back and enjoy a 60 minute non-stop ride of unadulterated Totally British 70s Rock 'n' Roll!

Some words from the BBC:
A romp through the BBC archive library from 1975 to 1979 has unearthed some seldom seen performances of the rarely-explored genre of pub rock and other late 70s rock 'n' roll gems from classic music programmes like the Old Grey Whistle Test and Top of the Pops. Before the DIY culture of punk took hold there was a whole breed of real musicians who honed their craft in the backrooms of pubs. And towards the end of the 70s men's hair was starting to get shorter too.
This compilation has uncovered rarely-seen footage from the likes of Canvey Island's Dr Feelgood, original pub rockers Ducks DeLuxe, Eddie and the Hot Rods, Elvis Costello, Meal Ticket, Steve Gibbons Band, Dave Edmunds and chum Nick Lowe, a pre-Mike & the Mechanics' Paul Carrack in his first band Ace, a post-Faces Ronnie Lane, the Motors, the first TV performance from Dire Straits, Graham Parker and the Rumour and many more.

Most commonly called 'Nick Lowe and his Noise to Go' they worked together through 1982 and 1983. This is a nice FM broadcast which went out over the airwaves across the country.
