veteran's day

Today at Allen's school they had a morning ceremony for Veteran's Day. I didn't go, but my parents and Abby were there. Ross had the day off but he was sick and I was up last night with the twins twice so it was nice for the two of us to sleep in a little until Emma reminded me she was hungry. (And when one wakes to eat, I wake the other. I'm trying to get them on the same schedule and it has been working fairly well.)

At the ceremony there was a place where the "special guests" (veterans) sat. My dad was one of the 40 veterans. He served in the army a few years after my parents got married. He was a field artillery officer during Vietnam and he was stationed at Fort Sill and Fort Ord in California. Dana (Ross's brother) and Robin (Ross's dad) also served in the military and we filled out a veteran sheets for them too which are now hanging in the school's hallway.

The program consisted of the high school choir, the Pledge, the National Anthem, all the veterans introducing themselves, and patriotic poems read by students. Following the ceremony there were refreshments (donuts and orange juice) for guests, veterans and their families. Allen beamed seeing his grandpa there. He kept waving at him and proudly told his peers, "that's my grandpa". My parents would not have come to town just for that (and grandparent day last week), but it worked out well that it happened while they were already here helping with the twins arrival.
