Movie Matinée: The Third Man

Screencap from The 3rd Man

The Third Man is one of the classic movies in the Film-Noir Genre.

It’s the story of Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) an unemployed fiction writer going to Vienna after the Second World War for a job offered by a good friend; Harry Lime (Orson Welles). On his arrival, his friend has just been killed by a car while crossing the street in front of his home. The mysterious death of Lime is slowly revealed to Martins as the story goes by. And that is all I am going to tell you about this film...

Sunday Matinée:
Plan 9 from Outer Space

This is a bad movie, even by the standards of the Lifetime Movie Network...but still better than Wrestling.

The plot is preposterous (even for the 1950's, and the special effects are bad. Very, very bad.

Here is Wikipedia has to say:

Plan 9 from Outer Space (originally titled as Grave Robbers from Outer Space) is a 1959 science fiction/horror film written, and directed by Edward D. Wood, Jr. The film features Gregory Walcott, Mona McKinnon, Tor Johnson and Maila "Vampira" Nurmi. The film bills Béla Lugosi posthumously as a star, although footage of the actor was shot by Wood for another film just before Lugosi's death in 1956.
The plot of the film is focused on extraterrestrial beings who are seeking to stop humans from creating a doomsday weapon that would destroy the universe. In the course of doing so, the aliens implement "Plan 9", a scheme to resurrect Earth's dead as zombies to get the planet's attention, causing chaos.
For years, the film played on television in relative obscurity, until 1980, when author Michael Medved dubbed Plan 9 from Outer Space the "worst movie ever made". It has also earned Wood a posthumous Golden Turkey Award (an award of Medved's creation) as the worst director ever. Various critics since have concurred with this opinion.

Internet Archive. (lefthand sidebar to choose your desired format)

Here is the Laugh Out Loud funny short from the Mystery Science Theater 3000 guys making fun of the movie...

If you know where I might get a copy of these guys panning Plan 9, please let me know in the comments.

Sunday Matinée:
War of the Worlds

This is the superior version of the films, and comes from the Golden Age of Science Fiction movies...I like them even if there is a bit of Lefty Moralizing in them.

If you have trouble viewing the video,
try this page, and try installing the Veoh Web Player on your computer and using Firefox, although I have no trouble in Google Chrome.

If I ever succumb to making amateur films again, this is one story I would want to tackle, both in trying to be faithful to the original, and in making a modern re-telling.

Sunday Matinée:
2010 The Year we Make Contact

How can I NOT embed this movie?

This movie is a fair adaptation of Arthur C. Clarke's book, save for leaving out the Chinese space mission to Europa.

I would like to see the movie franchise remade and retold in a fashion that included the Chinese space mission to Europa and also movies made of the prequel 2001 and the sequels 2061 and 3001.

Friday Night Cinema
Starship Farragut "For Want of a Nail"

**updates are at the bottom of this post**

The original series Star Trek is my favorite era of the Trek Universe, and I am glad that some fans are keeping the old-style production alive.

This is the second episode of the Star Trek Fan Film [see wikipedia] project of Farragut Films. You can check out what their next projects are at the Starship Farragut website.

The videos should advance automatically, and I hope that you enjoy the second episode of Starship Farragut, "For Want of a Nail"

This will be one of the last live action shows for the series because they have decided to further develop the project as an animated series. That will be interesting, but I'll miss the live action stuff.

**04-12-2009** Corrections and Additional Information

The first is a correction from Mark Hildebrand (I added the links in his comments):

This is Mark Hildebrand. I directed For Want of a Nail and am a producer for Starship Farragut.

I wanted to let you know that we are indeed making more live action adventures, most recently a "Crew Log" we released in November called A Rock and a Hard Place. The animated episodes are a side project spearheaded by Michael Struck at NEO FX. More information is on our web site.

And the second is from Clive, of Fan Cinema Today:

If you want to find out more about the world of fan films, you might want to check out my daily fan film blog, fancinematoday.com, where I've written about the Farragut crew a few times, most recently about their studio space move from Baltimore to Georgia.

This is very good news, and I am glad that both these guys checked in the correct my errors and provide additional information, and am glad that Clive pointed my to Fan Cinema Today.

A Christmas Story

You know, this is one holiday movie that I seem to have missed seeing while growing up.

I still don't know what to think about it...and I've only watched the first part. I'll keep an eye out for the DVD this week as I go about my Christmas shopping, and I hope there is a commentary track...

Thanks Giving Day Movie:
Planet of the Apes

Okay, it's not the real ones from the 60's and 70's but the "re-imagined" movie from a few years ago.

Click here if you want to watch it on Hulu.

I noticed that the movie was expiring in a few days, so watch it now or be left out...
