Today in Weather History

1755: An earthquake, tsunami, and fire struck Lisbon, Portugal all in one day. A magnitude 8.5 earthquake devastated the city of Lisbon, Portugal on this day, death-toll estimates range from 50,000 to 100,000 people. The epicenter was located 120 miles west-southwest of Cape St. Vincent. Many people who sought safety on the Tagus River were killed by a tsunami that struck 40 minutes after the earthquake, and many more perished in the firestorm that ravaged the surviving buildings and killed thousands more people. The trio of disasters brought down the Portuguese ambitions of establishing a colonial empire and changed the course of European history. It also gave birth to the scientific fields that study earthquakes and tsunamis.
