Poem

by Satu Manninen

I cut the patients out of the diagrams in an anatomy book,
under the paper-thin skin the blood doesn't circulate.
I trace the flowing blood vessels, cut the tumours
and appendix. The patients fold the pain into origami.
The nurses glide past like seagulls,
I feel their wing-beats in my abdomen.

Leikkaan potilaat anatomian kirjan kaavakuvista,
paperinohuen ihon alla veri ei kierrä.
Piirrän virtaavan suoniston, leikkaan kasvaimet
ja umpisuolen. Potilaat taittuvat kivusta origameiksi.
Hoitajat lipuvat lokkeina ohitse,
tunnen siiveniskut palleassani.
