Dynamic Duos

Threes a crowd, and pop culture's best teams are pairs. From Calvin & Hobbes to Jessie and Walt, Sam Carter put together 69 pairs for his solo show, Duos, at F+ Gallery.

Great Scott! Lots of Lloyds

Christopher Lloyd is all kinds of crazy but it is Judge Doom that still freaks me out. That final scene when his bugging out and his screeching is still stuck in my head. Nice work, Sam. (Lots of Lloyds by Sam Carter)

I Want You To Kill Every Gopher On The Golf Course!

"Correct me if I'm wrong Sandy, but if I kill all the golfers, they're gonna lock me up and throw away the key."

Low brow pop surrealist Sam Carter's latest is a panoramic of Caddyshack. Gunga galunga... gunga, gunga-lagunga. (It's In The Hole by Sam Carter)

The Wizard of Toy Story

There's No Place Like Andy's! Pop artist Sam Carter paints the cast of Toy Story as the characters from The Wizard of Oz. Woody is the Scarecrow; Jessie as Dorothy; Buzz Lightyear as the Tin Man and Rex as the Cowardly Lion. The barrel full of monkeys as the flying monkeys is a nice touch.

Super Sized Last Supper

Your eyes are bigger than your Last Suppers, at least according to a study of 52 of the most famous paintings of the Last Supper painted between 1000 and 2000.
“The last thousand years have witnessed dramatic increases in the production, availability, safety, abundance and affordability of food,” said Brian Wansink, a professor of marketing and applied economics at Cornell University in New York.

“We think that as art imitates life, these changes have been reflected in paintings of history’s most famous dinner.”
Over a thousand years, the size of the main dish progressively grew by 69.2%, plate size by 65.6% and bread size by 23.1%, they found.

No doubt they were looking at my collection of pop culture Last Supper parodies which are rife with fast food and  mascots for restaurant and sugar cereals.  We are what we worship.

Above: The Fast Supper by Sam Carter. "To me this has nothing to do with Christianity, it's more about the Religion of Fast Food. I felt that these commercial icons were my disciples." I've eaten at that religion.

Cereal Killers

Late at night, outside the Kellogg's factory and all hopped up on sugar, the cereal mascots are in the mood for trouble. Well, maybe not Sonny, who looks as blissed-out as usual. But the Trix Rabbit looks like he's looking for a different kind of trick and Lucky is just a drunk, but Cap'n Crunch, Tony and Sugar Bear look mean. Cereal Killers from pop artist Sam Carter.

Birth Of A Golden Girl

Bea Arthur as the goddess of love and beauty? Quick, Estelle, get that robe on her! Pop artist Sam Carter reinterprets Botticelli's The Birth of Venus into a tribute to The Golden Girls.
"Dorothy Zbornak is my favorite Golden Girl. The poor lady has been compared to a man her entire life and I felt it was time she got her time in the spotlight."

By The Power Of My Little Pony

What does He-Man need of a Battlecat when you he ride a fabulous My Little Pony? Pop artist Sam Carter has mashed together these two solitudes of kids cartoons (and product lines if we are to be honest) into one gender-bending super toy.

I was never much of a Masters of the Universe fan but my sister was crazy for the Ponies. Despite my lackluster interest, He-Man appears to be having a pop culture revival. Gallery 1988 will be presenting Under The Influence: He-Man and the Masters of the Universe next month and you can see many of artists entries at Super Punch.
