The Texas AG race Bush vs. Paxton

NY Times: Bush Dynasty, Its Influence Fading, Pins Hopes on One Last Stand in Texas George P. Bush is running to unseat the incumbent attorney general. His family, once powerful in Texas, has become an albatross as well as an asset. George P. Bush appears to be the most conservative Bush politicians.  He also has name recognition and is running against a politician that appears to be a magnet for law suits.  However, when Paxton is on the job as Texas AG he has been effective in getting verdicts that conservative Texans appreciate.  One of the curious things about the litigation against Paxton is that it never seems to go anywhere. I think either of these candidates would continue the Texas tradition of using litigation to accomplish conservatives' ends.  I think the staff of the AG's office in Texas also has able and effective lawyers.

The immigrant invasion

Karens Townsend: George P. Bush: Time for a declaration of invasion in Texas ... A week ago, the Texas Tribune reported that there is pressure on Governor Abbott from Republicans, including former Trump administration officials, to issue a declaration of invasion. This would allow local law enforcement to expel illegal migrants apprehended at the border. The term ‘invasion’ is incendiary and a declaration is likely unconstitutional. George P. thinks there is justification under the constitution to allow Texas to secure its border when the federal government fails to do so. George P. says Texas can invoke Article IV, Section 4 and Article 1, Section 10 of the constitution and exercise wartime powers, using state law enforcement to turn back illegals at the border. Arizona Attorney General Brnovich is also in favor of declaring an invasion in his state but so far Governor Ducey has rejected the idea. Brnovich is currently running for governor. Ducey is term limited out of office...

Trump considers endorsement in Texas AG race

CNN: As Donald Trump seeks to remain a kingmaker in Republican politics, the former President teased an upcoming endorsement in an important statewide race in Texas. In a new statement to CNN on Tuesday, Trump said he will soon be endorsing for Texas attorney general ahead of next year's GOP primary. The race will likely be between the incumbent, Ken Paxton , and current state land commissioner George P. Bush , who is expected to announce his challenge to Paxton as early as next week. "I like them both very much. I'll be making my endorsement and recommendation to the great people of Texas in the not-so-distant future. I told Texas that Sleepy Joe would be against guns, oil, and God, and I was right!" Trump said Tuesday. The jockeying for Trump's support is becoming standard practice in competitive Republican races. ... As Texas' attorney general, Paxton has been an ally of Trump's, including in the effort to overturn the results of the 2020 election. La...

Biden doing the opposite of what works on the border

Newsmax: President Joe Biden caused a crisis on the southwest border "overnight" after taking office in January, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton told Newsmax TV on Monday. The Biden administration is “actually doing exactly the opposite of what works," Paxton said on "John Bachman Now." "He made this vague argument… that this was all shut down. The reality was, under [former President Barack] Obama we had, you'll remember this, it's factual that we had migrant caravans coming up through Mexico into our country," he said. "President [Donald] Trump had to deal with the same thing, and what he did was he put forward proposals like building a long term solution like the wall, he encouraged border security to turn these people out and to keep them from crossing the border. And then the asylum process, he found a way to stop the loophole so that people have to wait in Mexico. "Those things actually worked," said Paxton. And Vice Pr...

George P. Bush beats back attempt by former Land Commissioner to retake the job

Fox News: George P. Bush, Texas’ land commissioner, won the state’s GOP primary on Tuesday, getting the outright majority of votes against a challenger from a former office holder and avoiding a runoff election. Bush, the son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, won against former land commissioner Jerry Patterson in the wake of an endorsement from President Donald Trump. His win was projected late Tuesday night when he had 58 percent of the vote. The stakes were high for Bush. His loss would have meant that no one from his family’s political dynasty, which includes two presidents, would be in elected office. “The name is definitely an asset here in the state,” Bush told Fox News on Tuesday morning. “Along with the president’s endorsement, I think it shows we are able to get support from many different types of Republicans,” he added. Deep-red Texas kicked off the nation's 2018 midterm primary elections Tuesday with a surge in turnout among Democrats, dozens of women seeking ...

George P. Bush is spokesman for school choice

Fox News Latino: While his father has grabbed headlines in recent days as he prepares for a possible 2016 presidential run, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush lent national star power to a school choice rally, championing school vouchers and charter schools in flawless English and Spanish. The son of presidential hopeful Jeb Bush, George P. Bush is a former public school teacher in Miami and served on the board of one of Texas' largest charter school operators. His office oversees Texas' Permanent School Fund, which helps pay classroom costs and which recently surpassed a Harvard University fund as the nation's largest educational endowment. Many at the rally wore "National School Choice Week" scarfs, and Friday's was one of many similar gatherings being held throughout the country. One of the organizers of Texas' event was the Libre Initiative, a national group funded by the conservative mega-donor Koch Brothers to woo Hispanics to conservative cau...

The next generation of Texas Republicans

San Antonio Express-News: Last Tuesday, George P. Bush tweeted the good news. “It's official! I filed my paperwork this afternoon to be your Republican candidate for Texas Land Commissioner — lots of work ahead and excited to potentially serve this Great State! #txlandcomm” He also uploaded photographic evidence of the occasion on Instagram: a pic of himself wearing a snazzy blue tie, signing the paperwork. It wasn't a professional photo, just a snapshot probably taken by an acquaintance or staffer who captured the moment on the smartphone. Good thing, too, because signing his name while taking one of those arm's-length selfies might have come across as bush league. By Wednesday morning, TeamGeorgeP had about 130 Instagram likes. His campaign's Facebook page? 117k. Thumbs up! It's hard not to be hopeful for this guy, and just a tad worried. This is not because of the impact George might have on the General Land Office , either; it's doubtful he'll spend a...
