Follow the Sign...
For the past two Saturday mornings, my friend Rachel and I have gotten up at the crack of dawn and put out a yard sale. We both had a bunch of "junk" that we wanted to get rid of, but didn't just want to throw it away. So we rallied together and put out a pretty good spread of baby equipment, baby clothes, toys, toddler clothes, children's books, adult clothing, shoes, lamps, rocker chair w/ottoman, house rugs, Mary Kay leftover stock, pictures frames, wall hangings etc... My daughter Alyssa and Rachel's daughter Janie set up a little Lemonade stand on the yard and sold glasses of cold lemonade for .10 a glass. They were so cute that every one gave them more than that for their glass. Of course, after a couple of hours, they went inside to play with toys while we were still yard selling. We ended up offering the buyers lemonade and I noticed they didn't want to take it from us quite as much as the little girls. Maybe it had something to do with how crappy we looked because it was so early in the morning and we were hot and sweaty?
We had a pretty good turn out both Saturdays, but I think we would have done a lot better had the City of Broken Arrow not have taken down our cool signs off of the intersections. LOSERS! For your future yard sale information- you must go get licensed yard sale signs from the city to put out or they will get taken away. I'm not sure how much they cost because obviously we didn't get them. We just put out another set of signs and they stayed out. The more stubborn one wins! :)
Anyway, after a couple of Saturdays of yard selling in the heat, I made a whopping $95.00 and I think Rachel made about $100.00 as well. We got rid of a lot of our stuff and whatever we didn't sell, we packed up in bags and took over to our local good will store.
I have decided that yard selling really isn't my kind of thing, but all in all it was a good experience. We made a little cash, cleaned out our old crap, and made a good contribution to a good will. Not too bad right?
You know what they say..."One mans trash is another mans treasure!"
