3 time Olympic gold medalist Jean-Claude Killy, and Bernard Cahier, the famous Formula 1 photographer, drove a works Porsche 911 S to victory in the GT class in the 1967 Targa Florio

If the name Killy sounds like I've posted it before, it's because he was on tour with OJ Simpson https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2019/11/linda-emailed-me-and-wanted-me-to-post.html getting interviewed by Hunter Thompson.

Bernard is one of my favorite goofball characters, he was a gran prix photographer and photo bomber, and car salesman at Phil Hill's dealership, but might be most famous for handing Sir Moss a coke when Moss drove past at speed, on a hairpin turn https://justacarguy.blogspot.com/2014/08/the-grand-prix-photobomber.html

100th anniversary of the Targa Florio! (Thank you Phil!)

Palermo, 8 May 2016 - “A Targa Florio returned to the beauty of its golden years, seeing all the great car racing drivers together, once again behind the wheel, in many cases in the cars they competed with in days gone by. I want to thank the Alfa Romeo Museum for this and the many collectors that wanted to make their treasures available to us.” This was the comment of the ACI Chairman, Angelo Sticchi Damiani, at the Floriopoli Paddock, on the 100th Targa Florio.

The Mayor of Palermo, Leoluca Orlando also commented on the results of this edition. “It was wonderful to be able to celebrate the relationship between Sicily and the world of cars.” And when speaking of his city which was the start and finish of the Targa Florio Classic, he added “Palermo is not a painting, but a mosaic with stones that can be more or less beautiful, but which together generate great harmony.”

A movie about the Targa Florio is coming

the early Targa Florio Race story that is being told by the upcoming movie Pistons, Passions and Sicilian Pleasures and the publication The Belle Epoque of the Targa Florio Races, a new book written by David Biggins and Antonio Lombardi

The first Targa Florio was organized by Italian enthusiast Vincenzo Florio in 1906. The race at that time was a three lap event over a 92.7-mile circuit on the island of Sicily. Alessandro Cagno in an Itala won the event, taking 9.5 hours to finish, while averaging 29 mph for the run: Carlo Graziani was second in another Itala, and Paul Bablot in a Berliet was third. Florio a prominent Sicilian had previously initiated the Coppa Brescia held in Italy and first run there in 1900. It was renamed the Coppa Florio in 1905 after he offered the initial prize money and a trophy for the race.
