Women Of Legend Supergirl Card
I promise you all that this will be the last post on Cryptozoic's Women of Legend card series. (Okay, I reserve the right to change my mind).
But I picked up a pack on a whim and was happy to find the Supergirl card inside.
Much like the Superman: The Legend Supergirl card, I am very happy with this. The pose with Supergirl flying above the Earth with the sun behind her is a riff on an iconic Superman pose, perhaps best seen at the end of almost every Superman movie. I like how there is a sort of action-y feeling to this, as if she is streaking to intervene somewhere as opposed to just basking in the sun. And I like the expression on her face, just a hint of happiness there.
The back text is a bit wonky, befitting the 'she's older but she's younger paradox' in Supergirl's origin.
One thing I don't like about the Cryptozoic cards in general is that they don't credit the artist. Who did this art? They deserve some credit.
I had to include this card which was in the same pack. There are lots of women Legionnaires but somehow Duplicate Damsel merited a card over such notables as Shadow Lass, Shrinking Violet, Phantom Girl, and Lightning Lass. (Saturn Girl does get her own card, appropriate given her 'original Legionnaire' status.)
Luorno did become something of a force in the Legion comic over the last several years becoming a leader, a warrior, and a no nonsense practical member. She rose pretty high on my 'favorite Legionnaires' list because of how she was written recently. So I was actually pretty happy to see her honored this way. I would have voted for her for Leader if there was another election. Alas the Legion has vanished.
I like the stylized art here as well, a little cartoony, a little anime, a little anger. It all worked.

Katie Cook Women Of Legends Sticker Set
As if I needed one more reason to DC Women of Legends collecting cards, Katie Cook just shared the stickers she is drawing for the set over on her site. Here is the link:
http://katiecandraw.typepad.com/katiecandrawcom_internet_/2013/09/katie-can-draw-a-dc-sticker-set-for-cryptozoic.html
That's one cute Supergirl sticker. It even makes the New 52 costume look good! Incredible.
Now I know that I could search for this on-line. But buying and opening the packs is about 80% of the fun. I know I'll never get this sticker that way.
Cook shares all the stickers she did including Wonder Woman, Power Girl, Harley Quinn, Batwoman, and others.
But this Poison Ivy one really stood out as fantastic. I really like this.
Of course, I am well acquainted with Cook's recent works on My Little Pony, a book the supergirls at home love to read. Cook and artist Andy Price sprinkle in plenty of Easter Eggs for grown-ups which make it a truly all ages book.
So looks like I'll be buying more Women of Legends cards on the way out.

Women Of Legend DC Universe Cards
The last thing my strained budget needs is an impulse buy item right at the cash register of my comic book store. But The Women of Legend trading cards have come out and I can't resist. Curse you Cryptozoic! Here is the company's page on the item: http://cryptozoic.com/trading-cards/dc-comics-women-legend-trading-cards
Much like the Superman:The Legend cards, they are a tempting little treat to grab as I cash out on Wednesdays. I suppose I could buy another comic with what I spend but there is something nostalgic and kind of magical about opening that little pack and hoping you get the cards you want.
I picked up a couple of packs recently and was happy with what I got.
First of I got this card with Supergirl and Silver Banshee together, looking quite team-ish in poses.
The art is also very nice here.
But the winner was this Lois Lane card.
I love the pose and how the card says she has suspicions about Clark. All while she coyly looks away from an open window where a necktie is floating down.
Very nice.
The series has a number of bonus like cards. There are 'totally fabricated' cards which include a piece of fabric from the hero's costume. (I didn't get this one). Seems a little silly.
There are also 'Gail's picks', foil cards of the 9 women characters Gail Simone thinks are the most important in the DCU. Yes, Supergirl is one of them.
But for me the best aspect are the rarer artist sketch cards which are included in some packs. If you look around on the internet, you can see examples of them everywhere.
I love this one by Tony Perna with Supergirl in her classic Bronze Age costume flying with the Legion. Seriously, that is one beautiful card.
Will I drop as much money on this product as I did with the Superman cards? Probably.

Supergirl Smorgasbord And Other News
I have been busy with reviews and news but there has been a bunch of small Supergirl news items I wanted to tell people about.
First off, blog friend Valerie21610, an ardent Supergirl and Brainiac 5 supporter has set up a Facebook group celebrating the couple. Here are her words:
I have started up a new facebook group, dedicated to Supergirl, Brainiac
5 as a couple and XTC their daughter. Talk about Supergirl,
Brainiac 5 and the Legion of Super Heroes will be allowed in it too.
The name of the group is Supergirl + Brainiac 5 = XTC.
Here is a link to the group. Sounds like a great group and a great cause: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/575563919149237/
While there are other Supergirl costumes I like much more than the New 52 one, I have to admit the last collectibles of the new costume have been pretty. This new Kotobukiya statue looks gorgeous. Here is a link to an store taking preorders: http://www.alteregocomics.com/supergirl-artfx-statue.html
And the solicit:
Now I might need to see this up close as Kotobukiya statues sometimes veer to being to cheesecakey and provocative for me. But this one looks pretty slick.
I spoke about the upcoming DC Women of Legend cards here. I get the sense that like the Superman The Legend cards, that these will be an impulse buy at the store.
I saw Nina Edlund's premiere sketch cards of DC's female super-heroes and super-villains over on the Mary Sue. Here is the link: http://www.themarysue.com/chibi-dc/#0
Supergirl is in the middle and looks super-cute.
Lastly, just the Boston Comic Con was just a couple of weeks ago and they have already announced next year's dates. In what I think is a great sign, they have added a third day! Hopefully I can swing all three. And they also kept it at the same site! I thought the Seaport was a great place - big spaces, easy to find, plentiful parking.

Kotobukiya continues their line of
awesome ARTFX+ Statues featuring characters of the DC Universe with the
Supergirl ARTFX+ Statue. Supergirl stands just over 7.5 inches tall and
includes magnets in her feet for added stability on the display base. The Supergirl
ARTFX+ Statue would make a great addition to your DC statue collection.

Women Of Legend Trading Cards
I cringed a bit when Cryptozoic released Superman:The Legend cards, knowing full well that those cards would be a money-losing impulse buy every time I went to the comic book store. And like most self-fulfilling prophecies it has come true. (I have 4 Morgan Edges and no Supergirl cards!!!)
And now, to make matters worse, coming out in the third quarter of 2013, Cryptozoic is releasing The Women of Legend trading cards. Here is the link to their official page:
http://www.cryptozoic.com/trading-cards/dc-comics-women-legend-trading-cards
And some of the information:
Packs: 5 Cards per pack, 24 packs per box
MSRP: $3.50 per pack
Base Set: 63 card base set featuring all-new original art
Chase Sets: Katie Cook Sticker Collection, Legendary Ladies foil cards (both 2:24), and Totally Fabricated costume cards (insert ratio to be determined)
Inserts: Sketch cards (1:24 packs)
My guess is I will be buying these as much as the Superman ones.
Here is the 'title card' by Ryan Odagawa showcasing a number of DC's most famous women.
It is very nice and I am happy that Supergirl is displayed so prominently on the card.
So looks like Cryptozoic will be taking more of my money very soon.
