First Pictures Out of Russia in Two Years -- July 12, 2023

Motion Picture News, 07-July-1923

Fox released "Red Russia Revealed," a two-reeler using footage shot in the USSR. "The Issues of a Military Despotism." "A Panic Stricken Country Under Red Rule." Blood drips from the hand that holds cards with photos of Lenin, Trotsky and "Kalenin" (Mikhail Kalinin). "Soldiers Forcing Priests at the Points of Bayonets to Search Gravel for Gold." "150,000,000 People Fighting the Wolf of Famine." "The Iron Heel Crushing a Nation." I wonder if the producers were for or against.

Przemyśl in the News Again -- March 2, 2022

Motion Picture News, 07-August-1915

Przemyśl (pronounced "sheh-mih-shul") is a city on the border between Poland and Ukraine. It was the site of a major Austro-Hungarian fortress. First the Russians took the fortress and then the Austrians recaptured what was left.

The German and Austrian governments surreptitiously set up the American-Correspondent Film Company in New York as a front organization to spread films intended to influence the American public to support the Central Powers or at least stay out of the war.

Today Przemyśl is the site of a growing refugee camp, which is taking in refugees who crossed the border from Ukraine after Putin's invasion. When a reporter mentioned Przemyśl, I knew where she was.
