Lon Chaney in His Greatest Role -- January 15, 2025

Tulsa Daily World, 03-January-1925

I have not written about Lon Chaney often enough. Swedish director Victor Sjöström (billed as Victor Seastrom) directed Chaney, Norma Shearer, John Gilbert and Tully Marshall in He Who Gets Slapped, based on a play by Leonid Andreyev. Chaney gave a remarkable performance as a man who acted out his humiliation every day as a clown. This M-G-M's first production.

Note "Extra! Cross-Word Puzzle Fun For the Film Fans." Crossword puzzles were a craze in 1925.

Buster Keaton as the Gum Shoe Man Who Gums Things Up is the Snake's Elbow -- April 21, 2024

Los Angeles Evening Post-Record, 25-April-1924

100 years ago today, on 21-April-1924, Buster Keaton's latest feature film, Sherlock, Jr, went into release. It is short but wildly funny. Buster and his crew performed several technical miracles. "Death to Crime/Long Live Laughter." "'Laugh Week' Starts Tomorrow"

Atlanta Constitution, 26-April-1924

Readers will notice that the ads for both the Angeles and Atlanta are for Loew's Theaters. Loew's, Incorporated was in the process of merging Metro and Goldwyn to form M-G-M.

Atlanta Constitution, 26-April-1924

A detail from the ad above. The scene with Buster on the motorcycle is one of the highlights of the movie. "Fun, Fast and Furious in this feature length comedy that tops the best Buster has ever done. It's funny enough to give a bald-headed man a permanent wave." Permanent waves, now usually called permanents, were just becoming popular in the US in the 1920s.

Memphis Commercial-Appeal, 26-April-1924

"Buster Keaton Conceals himself in 'Sherlock, Jr.'" Buster played a movie projectionist who longed to be a detective. He wore a subtle false mustache and carefully studied his book, How to Be a Detective. He took its instructions literally.

"Buster Keaton as the Gum Shoe Man Who Gums Things Up is the Snake's Elbow." What a great tag line. This ad uses the permanent wave joke again.

M-G-M 100 -- April 17. 2024

Film Daily, 06-April-1924

100 years ago today, on 17-April-1924, the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (M-G-M) Corporation was formed by the merger of the Goldwyn Company and Louis B Mayer's Metro Pictures Corporation. M-G-M became the most powerful film corporation in Hollywood. I notice that this item does not mention the Loewe Corporation. I remember the credit on M-G-M movies that said "Controlled by the Loew's Corporation."

Along with Mayer, the new company received production manager Irving Thalberg and his wife actress Norma Shearer.

Samuel Goldwyn Allowed Use of Name -- November 26, 2023

Motion Picture News, 03-November-1923

Samuel Goldwyn was born in Warsaw, which was then part of the Russian Empire, in 1879 or 1882. When he came to the US in 1899, he was called Samuel Goldfish. He worked in the glove industry, eventually becoming a successful salesman. In 1913, he joined with Jesse Lasky, Cecil B. DeMille, and Arthur Friend to found the Jesse L Lasky Feature Play Company. In 1916, the Lasky Company merged with Adolph Zukor's Famous Players Film Company to form the Famous Players–Lasky Corporation. Goldfish was chairman of the board, but, later in 1916, he resigned after repeatedly clashing with Adolph Zukor, he resigned. Goldfish joined with brothers Edgar and Archie Selwyn to form Goldwyn Pictures. Goldfish liked the name Goldwyn, so he changed his last name in 1918. In 1924, Goldwyn Pictures merged into the Metro Company. Goldwyn left before the merger and formed Samuel Goldwyn Productions.

The original Goldwyn Company sued to prevent Goldwyn from using his name on the new company. He eventually prevailed in court and went on to a long career as an independent producer.

Actor John Gilbert was born 125 years ago today, on 10-July-1897. He became a big star when he signed with M-G-M in the 1920s. There were stories that his voice was not suitable for talkies, but it sounded fine in the two talkies I have seen.
