Betty White 100 -- January 17, 2021

Betty White would have been 100 years old today. She was born on 17-January-1922. During World War Two, she participated in the American Women's Voluntary Services. She started working regularly on television in 1949. I remember her on the Mary Tyler Moore Show. Lots of people were looking forward to celebrating her birthday, but she died just a few weeks ago.

Ed Asner, RIP -- August 30, 2021

Actor and activist Ed Asner has died. I remember when I first saw the Mary Tyler Moore show that he played a stereotypical gruff, angry man. Over time, the character grew and showed he had a heart, while still being gruff. I was amazed when the Lou Grant show spun off as a drama. I could not think of another example where a situation comedy had spun off a drama. He was a good enough actor to make the transition.

 The whole family loved Up

Asner served in the Army during the Korean War. He was always interested in politics, serving twice as the president of the Screen Actors Guild. He later fought the merger with AFTRA. He spoke of clashing with John Wayne during the production of Howard Hawks' El Dorado.

Cloris Leachman, RIP -- January 28, 2021

I was sad to learn that actress Cloris Leachman has died. She was good in everything. She made a large impression with a small part in Kiss Me Deadly. I remember her on Mary Tyler Moore. She played a dramatic role in The Last Picture Show and funny parts in Young Frankenstein and High Anxiety

"Such sad news—Cloris was insanely talented. She could make you laugh or cry at the drop of a hat. Always such a pleasure to have on set. Every time I hear a horse whinny I will forever think of Cloris’ unforgettable Frau Blücher. She is irreplaceable, and will be greatly missed."

Mary Tyler Moore, RIP -- January 26, 2017

www.listal.com

I was sad to learn of the passing of Mary Tyler Moore.  I first saw her in reruns of The Dick Van Dyke Show.  Later I watched The Mary Tyler Moore Show on first run or rerun.  "The Death of Chuckles" was one of the best sitcom episodes I have ever seen.  Mary was always delightful.  Mary and Dick Van Dyke were a team.  She played a housewife, but insisted on dressing like a real person.  On her own show, she played in independent woman who had to compete with men in the workplace, and did a good job.  She demanded equal pay for equal work.  Her production company made many good situation comedies and dramas.  She was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award for Ordinary People.  She spent much of her life educating people about diabetes and fighting for better treatment of animals.  What a wonderful person.
