ἐν βραχεῖ ξυνθεὶς: cp. Eur. fr. 362. 5 “βραχεῖ δὲ μύθῳ πολλὰ συλλαβὼν <*>ρῶ”: Thuc. 2. 41ξυνελών τε λέγω”. It has been supposed that the spectators were intended to perceive a second meaning in “ξυνθείς”,—that of ‘composing’ a false story (see n. on 584); but this would surely be unfitting here.
