Made By A Fabricista: Relaxed Challis Set

Happy Friday All! It's amazing how fast this summer is flying by. Even with my decision to work this summer, I've been determined to carve out some time for a few sewing projects before the new school year begins. Lately, I've been pondering over my style and contemplating the wardrobe pieces I'd like to create for the upcoming school year and know comfort would be a priority. I am drawn towards loose, flowy clothing that's versatile and easy to style. When I stumbled upon this stunning rayon challis fabric print with two different colorways, I immediately envisioned two specific looks, a pants or skirt set.  I wanted a loose-fitting relaxed set that I could rock to work. Even though I didn't end up creating those exact looks, I was certain that I wanted to make a coordinated set.  Initially, I wanted to use Simplicity 9756, but upon examining the finished garment for the size 18 pants, it became evident that extensive modifications would be needed to achieve th...

Made By A Fabricista: A Double-Duty Topper Sewn in a Lightweight Bubble Crepe

Hello Sewing Friends! Sharon here with my latest Fabricista make, a lightweight kimono influenced  topper – or is it? The fabric I used is a polyester bubble crepe, lightweight and airy, perfect for my loose-fitting topper.  If you’ve heard that lightweight polyester fabrics are difficult to sew, don’t be afraid to try this bubble crepe. I was pleasantly surprised that it was fairly easy to handle and sew.  Even though polyester fabric does not shrink, I prewashed the fabric.  I prefer to make sure any potential sizing has been removed from my fabrics before I sew my garments. I placed an old cardboard cutting board on top of my cutting table and cut out my pattern pieces with the fabric on top of the board.  It helped keep everything from slipping while I pinned and cut.  Pattern weights would have worked well also. Because the fabric is lightweight and translucent (meaning light does pass through so it’s semi-transparent) a French seam would make for a be...

Made By A Fabricista: Summer Feels

Hello darlings,    I feel like it’s been such a long time since my last post, don’t you think? Time is however still flying buy and we are almost to the end of summer and to close it on a high note I am bringing you two looks and they are super cool, fun summer looks. For the first look I used this beautiful challis/rayon, the color palette is what attracted me to choosing this print. The black font is covered with orange, white, peach, a burgundy and two shades of green palm leaves, screaming summer. The hand on this fabric is super soft, while it has a nice body to it, it drapes amazingly. Needless to say that I was excited to work with it! For the top I used Simplicity 8549 view C. This pattern showcases trendy bra tops or bralettes in three length, shoulder straps and closure variations. The version I used C can be treated as a faux bustier and ties in the back with a generous size bow. I love this tops as it fully lined and I used a black broadcloth. It is a simple top, I...

Made by a Fabricista: Showing Some Kimono Love!

Sometimes other sewists and their amazing garments are the best inspiration!  I knew I wanted to finally jump on the Kimono craze, but wasn't sure how to go about it.  Until....I saw this gorgeous fabric!

Made by a Fabricista: Kimono and Jacket for Fall in Florida!

"I hope that my daughter grows up empowered and doesn't define herself by the way she looks but by qualities that make her an intelligent, strong and responsible woman."   Isaiah Mustafa I am all about the palm trees and the 80 degrees. I am in love with Florida weather and would not trade it for the snow and frigid cold.  I have been lucky the last few years to be able to wear summer type clothing most of the year.  Even though it doesn't snow here, once in a while we get to dress up in sweaters and boots when the temperature drops to the low 40s.  Lucky for my daughter and I, we get to wear kimonos, light weight jackets and sweaters during the fall season. My daughter fell in love with my pink kimono ( here ) and insisted that I make a mini size version.   She actually wanted a light weight rayon kimono and jacket made for her birthday. She loves when we dress up in similar colors or matching prints.  On the first of the month, she...

Sew Over It Kimono - Maternity Style

As many of you can probably relate, finding maternity clothes can be a hard task! I don't want to spend a lot of money on them but I also need to be comfortable. And as my baby bump grows, my regular clothes are getting tighter and tighter.  Thankfully as a sewist, I have the ability to sew maternity clothes that will fit and I will like. I have already remade the tops of a few over-the-belly pants and took older pairs of regular shorts and added an over-the-belly band. That's been helpful for sure! (I think the over-the-belly pants are so uncomfortable. I make my belly bands a little bigger while still holding my pants on me.) Being the frugal person that I am, I REALLY don't want to make a lot of garments that will only be used in pregnancy (and for a time in post pregnancy.) I want things that I can adjust later to fit my new "regular" body. Therefore I have sewn a lot of tunics and dresses that have plenty of room to grow but will still be stylish afterwar...

Made by a Fabricista: The Golden Girl

Hello Peeps! We had a little va-kay while the sewing competition was happening but we are baaaccckkkk! Let me tell you how much I love gold especially metallic-gold so when I saw the gold tone silks that Fabric Mart had to offer I had to get a few shades. I have two shades one  Hollywood-Gold  for myself (yes I said myself) and this  Gold-Black  for Mori. Now since this is a LUXE fabric the pattern needed to be simple, so I chose McCall's 7200 "Easy" kimono. I made view C with view B length. The pattern is very Easy perfect for a beginning sewist. It is a slim fitting kimono so if I use the pattern again I will add some width for a fuller look. I would also make my ties thicker, they are a little dainty for me. I love the look of this kimono because you can dress it up or down. I topped my Golden look off with a pair of DIY distressed jeans that I made using  Simplicity's 8222  #Mimigstyle pattern, a plain white t-shirt, these fabulous Gold open to...
