Skirt Challenge: Selene for Travel!

I wore this outfit on Friday to school, to give the skirt a test run before my trip! When Fabric Mart announced they were hosting a skirt challenge for May, and asked if I would participate, I jumped in with both feet immediately.  During the school year I prefer to keep my makes to once every two months, but I couldn't say no!  I am heading to California in a week to spend time with some relatives, and I figured making a skirt and top from a double knit printed fabric  (they sold out of this pretty feather printed version) would be an excellent choice.  I told Fabric Mart I loved the idea of wearing the two pieces together so they looked like a dress, and I also loved the fact that the skirt could pair well with multiple tops in my closet, and the top would also pair with many bottoms.  This means I can pack less for my journey out west! The Selene from Colette Patterns was my first choice for its classic shape (a straight skirt that I could...

Made by a Fabricista: Another Winter Coat

I had to make another winter coat and this time in a trend...mustardy-yellow. Can you blame me? This color is all over the place and I love it! Instead of being a year or two late, I decided for once in my life to be (sort of) on time for a fashion trend! Here is the pattern I choose. It is a uni-sex pattern. I'd previously made it for my son and knew what I needed to do to make it fit me. And, guess what? You can find this pattern on Fabric Mart's site! Here is a link: Colette Albion Coat If you don't like following links, here is a picture :)   I love the fabric I chose for this coat. It has a nice heft to it and is soft and warm!. And, isn't it a great color? This fabric doesn't ravel at all, so to finish off the seams, I choose to topstitch 1/4" on each side of the seamline. There was only one seam that I was unable to do this and that one you can see in the photo below. This fabric is a bit heavy, for the ...

Made by a Fabricista: Summer Sewing with TNT Patterns

I'm happy to be back this month with a summer Fabricista project and some exciting news... There's nothing more rewarding for a sewist than having a TNT (tried and true) pattern you love to make, is easy to wear and versatile enough that you can make it over and over with great results. I decided to set out and do just that: design a line of modern patterns with friendly, fully illustrated instructions that sewers could use to build their sewing skills, fill their closets and add to their TNT pattern list. So with that, I'm excited to announce  Blue Dot Patterns, my new sewing patterns! For my summer outfit, I used one of Blue Dot's first patterns,  the Dover Jacket  which comes with two views. View A is short sleeved with a single button closure and view B has a 3/4 length sleeve, gathered bodice and a three button closure. I chose a lightweight stretch denim from Fabric Mart (sadly it sold out) would be perfect for view A because it would look great wi...
