Ghazghkull Thrakka is probably one of the most famous special characters in the whole 40k verse and understandably so since he's also one of the very first to have had his model. Orktober still being in the air (my understanding is that orctober runs from one month of october to the next), and having my schedule a little challenged by Trench Crusade I'm finally paying my hommage to Gork and Mork this year !
Now this model is obviously very inspired by the iconic rendition of Ghaz that graced the cover of the 2nd edition ork codex, another wonder from the ever inspiring Mark Gibbons !
Now as you'd imagine, I hesitated a bit between trying to copy the illustration and doing it in my own Klan's colours which is the solution that prevailed in the end !
That made all teh choices much easier since I know the palette for these guys well enough so it's just muscle reflex and enjoying a mindful painting time (which quite frankly is very convenient and pleasant)
Size wise, he's a real beef but not to the point of being unplayable in old fashioned games I reckon, he's pretty much ogryn sized and if you consider his face alone, it's about he same size as old orks. Being a 3D print though, you can adjust scale to whichever you see fit really.
This guys is in a way the 3 Ghaz I've painted and it's funny to see how much of the original (as Mike McVey had converted him) still shows in the later iterations although this one is of course not GW licensed and strays away from the last 2 incarnations of the ultimate boss.
Now this orctober has got me a little carried away with BIG models, and I mean really heavy ones, it might take a while but it's going to be fun so in the meantime, happy painting to you all !
When I just saw the first pic I started skeaquing like a Snotling in love. Wow, this is so impressive. Truly an amazing work, JB, congrats
ReplyDeleteThanks mec ! He was great fun working on !
DeleteFantastic painting and a very cool model! Never realised that the Ork on the cover was Ghaz, despite looking at it countless times since my childhood, haha
ReplyDeleteFun fact: The Squig Hound in my profile picture was painted to resemble the Squig in that artwork :D
I'll admit it did take me a while before figuring out that ork was was Ghaz as well !
DeleteMega! I really like all the little touches like the flames on the cannon barrel and the reddened knuckles. Are you gonna paint the other 3 official Ghazghkull incarnations?
ReplyDeleteI can only think of 2 other official incarnations and although I could surely paint the metal one, the big plastic one isn't the kind f project I'd want to throw cash on although I'd surely give my best on if I had one.
DeleteImpressively done, especially your work on the chainsword. The muted colours there mean the checks are obvious but they don't distract from the rest of the model.
ReplyDeleteBill.
Thanks ! I usually keep my colours muted so both the white and black parts are actually opposite greys, I tend to keep pure black and pure whites for specific purposes.
Deletebeautiful work dude
ReplyDeleteThanks !
DeleteBrilliant work. He's a really nice model - he's got that old-school chunkiness that really suits the orks.
ReplyDeleteI agree, he almost has a saturday morning cartoon/toy feeling that's just under the bar to stay cool without being ridiculous.
Deletegenial, simplemente genial.
ReplyDeleteMerci !
