ART BOOK REVIEW: Draw and Paint Vampires - Scott Purdy

BOOK BLURB:

This title includes ten extremely gradual step by step projects that show how to conceptualise, draw and paint a great selection of fantasy art vampires. Projects include all vampire classics - from the legendary Dracula to modern pop-culture icons such as a Goth Vampire and a High School Cheerleader vampire. First part of the book provides general guidelines on basic concepts and art techniques, and vampire lore - accompanied throughout by Scott's highly impactful art. For anyone who draws and paints fantasy art, but particularly teenage/twenty-somethings who really 'dig' vampires and vampire-related culture.

REVIEW:

Traditional artwork of fantasy creatures for the artistically minded and one that will give the reader a number of years experience in a very short time. Easy to follow, beautifully written with step by step instructions to allow the reader to create their own vamps in a very short time. Add to the mix a style that is pretty easy to replicate it’s a title that will inspire as well as impress the reader with their own sense of accomplishment after following Scott’s advice. Also add to the mix some great tips on how to organise your workspace, what colours work well together and its lessons that will last a lifetime.

ART BOOK REVIEW: Goblinoids: How to draw... - Scott Purdy

BOOK BLURB:

This classic fantasy art title explores the previously unchartered territory of Goblinoids. This book will show readers how to design, draw and paint every kind of goblinoid. This is a fun exploration of all six goblinoid 'races' of the fantasy world. Highly practical and packed with hot tips a series of classes are presented with each race which gives the author the opportunity to show readers how to construct characters in strong step sequences. The characters range from the humorous, dragon flying Goblin through to the dark, evil and twisted torturous Hobgoblin. A wealth of visual and textual information offers guidance on drawing and painting - both traditionally and digitally - the diverse world of Goblinoids.

REVIEW:

If there is an iconic race that for most defines the villainy of the fantasy genre its Goblinoids. Here, for the first time, is an artists playful interpretation of the green skins that makes this a pure joy to read, backed up with tips and tricks that have taken years to learn. All variants of the race are taken into consideration from the hulking, brute like Orcs and Trolls to their more mentally driven brethren, the Goblins. Its quirky, its fun and above all it is a book that will inspire artists of all ages to challenge themselves as traditional fantasy rules are thrown away to allow the fully realised concepts to step into the foreground from their imaginations to the realised interpretations upon the page.

Whilst other fantasy art books allow the reader/artist to grasp a greater range of fantasy stereotypes, there is not a concentration to aid the artist on getting each variant along with angles right over quantity. This is a book purely for those who want to let their imaginations run riot and have a lot of pleasure along the way. A great instructional guide to own and inspire the next generation of artists, that will allow each to develop their own indomitable style.
