SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Horus Heresy: The Crimson King - Graham McNeill

Release Date: 30/11/17
Publisher: Black Library

SYNOPSIS:

After the razing of Prospero, Magnus the Red spirited the Thousand Sons away to the Planet of the Sorcerers, deep within the Eye of Terra. Removed from the concerns of the galaxy at large and regarding the Warmaster’s unfolding Heresy with cold detachment, Magnus has dedicated his hollow existence to the preservation of all the knowledge once held in the great libraries of Tizca, should mankind ever seek such enlightenment again. But his sons can see the change in their primarch – he is a broken soul, whose mind and memories are slipping away into the tumult of the warp. Only by returning to the scenes of his greatest triumphs and tragedies can they hope to restore him, and allow the Crimson King to be crowned anew by the Ruinous Powers.

REVIEW:

OK, lets get the basic business done first. Are you a fan of the Thousand Sons? Have you read the Thousand Sons as well as Prospero Burns? If the answer is no, stop right here now. Read those books first to get the full flavour as well as a good bit of background to this story.

Right up to date? Ready to roll? Magic. This book by Graham is an epic outing as we learn how the chapter deals with thier seperation from the Throne into the realms of chaos as the primarch seeks to preserve their knowledge should mankind ever need it again. Its a dark tale, it has some magical twists and with the way that its woven makes this a book that I had a hell of a time putting down. Back this up with good action sequences alongside a brotherhood uniting to help return thier Master and all round its a book that I'll be rereading again.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy: Sons of the Forge - Nick Kyme

Release Date: 18/11/16
Publisher:  Black Library

SYNOPSIS:

Charged with a solemn duty by the primarch himself, Forgefather T’kell of the Salamanders prepares for what may well be his final journey. Along with a chosen few of the Legion’s elite Firedrakes, he must bear the last seven of Vulkan’s greatest weapons away to the secret vault known as the Wrought, putting them forever beyond the reach of treacherous enemy and well-intentioned ally alike. But word has already spread of these legendary artefacts, and there are many who would see T’kell’s endeavour fail for their own gain – the Salamanders must remain true, no matter what horrors they might face...

REVIEW:

Getting to see an origin story is one of the things I love about diving back into the Horus Heresy and to be honest its one of the reasons you have to read Nick Kyme's Sons of the Forge as the reader accompanies Forgefather T'Kell on his journey to hide the artifacts of the Salamander Chapter that future generations will attempt to reunite.

Its a cracking story, high octane action, top notch prose and of course the reader gets to the see the effects of this mission play out amongst his unit. Add to this a story arc that works wonderfully well for the misfortunes of 40K and all round I was a more than happy reader. Another cracker and a must for Salamander fans.

SCIENCE FICTION AUDIO REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: The Horus Heresy: Censure - Nick Kyme

REVIEW:

A cracking new audio book from the Black Library that will not only come across to the listener wonderfully with top notch audio effects and a storyteller that knows how to weave for his audience. With a cracking lead character and an outing that will keep the listener not only glued but entertained all round makes this a top notch offering.

SCIENCE FICTION AUDIO BOOK REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: The Horus Heresy: Honour to the Dead - Gav Thorpe

Release Date: 29/08/13
Publisher:  Black Library

SYNOPSIS:

As Calth burns, the Battle Titans of the Fire Masters legion take to the streets of the city of Ithraca, ready to massacre the fleeing civilian population in the name of their new, dark masters. But the remaining loyalist engines of the Legio Praesagius - the True Messengers - still stand ready to defend the Imperium, even in the face of almost certain death. With the nearby Ultramarines forces scattered and lost, the people of Ithraca must fend for themselves as gigantic war machines unleash apocalyptic weaponry across the ravaged skyline...

REVIEW:

The audio books from the Black Library are always good fun to listen to and whilst they usually are told from a quite small point of view of huge epic battles, bloodshed as well as wonderfully acted by the talent, this one is a little different as we get the story partly from a civilian point of view.

Its wonderfully descriptive, the dialogue works wonderfully and the sound effects generate a story that will have the listener on tenterhooks as it slowly unveils itself, told from multiple points of view including Space Marines, Chaos, civilians as well as from the War Machine Gods that stride the Battlefield of death. Its definitely different and Gav Thrope really has captured the terrible confusion of a war being fought. All round a great piece of Audio fiction and one that I’ll be listening to again in the near future. Magic

SCIENCE FICTION SHORT STORY REVIEW: Horus Heresy: Dark Heart - Anthony Reynolds

Release Date: 28/01/13

SYNOPSIS:

When the Word Bearers launched their surprise assault on Calth, it marked the beginning of their righteous campaign of vengeance against the hated Ultramarines Legion. But for one young acolyte of Kor Phaeron, it is not the sons of Guilliman that he seeks to bring low - through infernal pacts and daemonic power he strives to carve out a destiny for himself in the midst of the greatest war that the galaxy has ever seen. The name of Marduk shall be spoken with awe for millennia still to come...

REVIEW:

The Forces of Chaos are at the forefront of this short story by Anthony Reynolds as he takes the darker path giving the reader the opportunity to see how those Acolytes of the Ruinous Powers see to not only raise their own standing but demonstrate that no man will stand in their way.

Back this up with solid prose, some great combat that demonstrates how brutal the war is between the Warriors of Man and those of Chaos and all round it’s a short story that will give you that dark chilling edge as you sit there travelling to your destination.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy 22: Angel Exterminatus - Graham McNeill

Release Date: 17/01/13

SYNOPSIS:

Long has he lived in the shadow of his more favoured primarch brothers, frustrated by the mundane and ignominious duties which regularly fall to his Legion. Pursued by vengeful survivors from Isstvan V and the revenants of a dead eldar world, they must work quickly if they are to unleash the devastating power of the Angel Exterminatus!

REVIEW:

OK, the dark nights have closed in around you, you’re wrapped in your duvet and seeking a little chill in your Science Fiction reading that will have you keeping the light on for a little bit longer, suddenly learning that its past dawn and you’ve spent the night reading, so what have you discovered?

Well quite possibly the latest book in the Horus Heresy series by Graham McNeill that not only gives the reader a tale of sordid deeds but one that will sink its pleasurable claws into the readers imagination as notable characters appearances will haunt you from page to page.

The writing is crisp, the descriptiveness works well and when the reader gets to see how low the chapter has fallen, they really can’t help but be dragged screaming to the twisted pleasures of Slaanesh as Graham’s writing holds you within its grasp. Add to the mix some wonderful plot devices some great sleight of hand and all round this book is a hell of a way to start the New Year. Magic.

SCIENCE FICTION AUDIO BOOK REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy: Garro: Sword of Truth - James Swallow

Release Date: 06/12/12

SYNOPSIS:

Nathaniel Garro, knight errant and agent of the Sigillite, returns from the battlefields of Calth to find a new mission already waiting for him – a ragged fleet of Space Marines from several Legions lingers at the edge of the Terran system. With the presence of World Eaters and Emperor’s Children causing concern among the loyalist defenders and drawing a grim parallel with his own frantic flight, Garro must look beneath the obvious if he is to determine friend from foe...

REVIEW:

As many people are aware I love a good audio book, its something that I can enjoy on journey’s or something that really hits the spot when I’m having trouble sleeping and can’t find a way to relax taking me back to the days of my childhood when I used to listen to ghost stories on the radio that sent not only a chill of excitement down my spine but delivered that wonderful feeling of safety as I’m toasty in bed.

What this title by James Swallow provides will, for quite a few readers, turn out to be something not far short of miraculous as this double length story will not only thrill and entertain but deliver a tale that will have not only the characters questioning loyalties but the listeners as well as quality vocal acting brings everything to the fore. Add to the mix a story that lends itself to the series wonderfully as well as giving the reader the type of tale they love and all round you really can’t go far wrong. Definitely value for money.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy 1-3: Horus Rising, False Gods, Galaxy in Flames - Dan Abnett, Graham McNeil, Ben Counter

Release Date: 25/10/12

SYNOPSIS:

It is the 31st millennium. Under the benevolent leadership of the Immortal Emperor, the Imperium of Man has stretched out across the galaxy. It is a golden age of discovery and conquest. But now, on the eve of victory, the Emperor leaves the front lines, entrusting the great crusade to his favourite son, Horus. Promoted to Warmaster, can the idealistic Horus carry out the Emperor’s grand plan, or will this promotion sow the seeds of heresy amongst his brothers? Horus Rising is the first chapter in the epic tale of the Horus Heresy, a galactic civil war that threatened to bring about the extinction of humanity.

REVIEW:

The first book of the Horus Heresy rereleased as a Hardback in time and whilst the cynical out there may think that its just an excuse to cash in I’d have to disagree. Firstly you have the hugely talented Dan Abnett writing it and secondly because, if like me you like to reread books prior to starting the next in the series, your original copy might be looking a little bit worse for wear by now.

All in the writing is crisp, the story wonderfully told and if you have to start on something this epic, you need perhaps your top man up there to help direct the readers into the struggle of an immensely complex and game changing war in mankind’s fate. Back that up with some wonderful phrases, cracking combat alongside a wonderfully imagined story and all in you’re in for a treat. Great stuff.

Release Date: 25/10/12

SYNOPSIS:

The Great Crusade that has taken humanity into the stars continues. The Emperor of mankind has handed the reins of command to his favoured son, the Warmaster Horus. Yet all is not well in the armies of the Imperium. Horus is still battling against the jealousy and resentment of his brother primarchs and, when he is injured in combat on the planet Davin, he must also battle his inner daemons. With all the temptations that Chaos has to offer, can the weakened Horus resist?

REVIEW:

The Second Horus Heresy novel and whilst I truly loved the first, it was this that really announced the explosion onto the scene of a series that will be a firm fan favourite for a number of years. As with the Horus Rising reprint, this too is another hard back and all in really gives the reader the full meat and bones of the events that led to the split of mankind’s legions. It’s dark, it has some cracking twists and when added to the authors writing style that not only keeps you glued but finds way to make the changes understandable, it’s quite easy to see what a slippery slope good intentions can be. All in a cracking title and one that I loved rereading.

Release Date: 25/10/12

SYNOPSIS:

Having recovered from his grievous injuries, Warmaster Horus leads the triumphant Imperial forces against the rebel world of Isstvan III. Though the rebels are swiftly crushed, Horus's treachery is finally revealed when the planet is razed by virus bombs and Space Marines turn on their battle-brothers in the most bitter struggle imaginable.

REVIEW:

As with the other two rereleases this is the third (and for the moment) last book to be reprinted as a Hard Backed copy. It’s a fitting place to leave the series and when added to the readers will to return to the beginnings of the struggle, its definitely a book that will see a lot of hand time as you eek over every choice made alongside the authors lavishly created tale of the struggle.

As with the others the pace is quickening, the action is hard and fast which when added to the authors own unique voice really allows the reader to get to the heart of the story. Back that up with some great visual viscera and all round the reader is in for something spectacular.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy: Shadows of Treachery - Ed. Christian Dunn

Release Date: 27/09/12

SYNOPSIS:

From the battlefields of Phall and Isstvan, to the haunted shadows of Terra itself – the greatest war in the history of mankind rages on. While the traitor Legions continue their campaign of terror across the galaxy, preparations are made for the defence of the Imperial Palace and the final, inevitable reckoning that must yet come between Horus and the Emperor...

REVIEW:

To be honest this book is one that you might want to watch picking up if you’ve been pretty up to date with buying a number of the E-books as well as the audio titles from the Black Library as quite a few of them have been about before. Don’t get me wrong if you’ve not purchased either it’s a book that you’ll love especially with the rich writing talent within but if you’ve already got a lot of the addition mediums, the odds are you’ll feel a little short changed.

That said, the writing is crisp, the short stories a wonderful diversion for journeys and when backed with a whole host to dip into all taking part during mankinds galactic civil war makes this a book that would be wonderful for a Christmas Gift. All in pretty reasonable but check what the person you’re buying it for already has as otherwise you may find it hardly touched.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy: Fear to Tread - James Swallow

Release Date: 13/09/12

SYNOPSIS:

Since the earliest days of the Great Crusade, Sanguinius - angelic primarch of the IXth Legion - was ever among the closest and most loyal of Horus's brothers. But the Blood Angels have long kept their true nature hidden from the rest of the Imperium, and when the Warmaster hints that the key to their salvation may lie in the ruins of a conquered world, the sons of Sanguinius race to claim it. Now, as the revelation of their betrayal dawns and the traitors' hand is revealed, the Blood Angels must face all the warp-spawned armies of Chaos, as well their own personal daemons, upon the blasted plains of Signus Prime...

REVIEW:

To be honest I generally sit back and enjoy any Horus Heresy title that lands but for some reason this one felt a little flat. Don’t get me wrong there was solid action, some great twists but overall it felt like it was more a series of idea’s to help patch it up to a full length novel than one that was fully planned originally.

It does have some good prose, the pace does fluctuate to allow the reader to breathe but for me something was just missing that meant that my overall reading pleasure just wasn’t there so for me, this wasn’t one of the best HH titles to date.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy: The Primarchs - Ed. Christian Dunn

Release Date: 24/05/12

SYNOPSIS:

Created in the Emperor’s own image, the primarchs had long thought themselves to be princes of the universe and masters of their own destiny – they led the Space Marine Legions in glorious conquest of the galaxy, and no enemy of the Imperium could stand against them. However, even amongst this legendary brotherhood, the seeds of dissent had been sown long before the treacherous Warmaster Horus declared his grand heresy.

REVIEW:

I’m a massive reader of the Warhammer 40K titles so when I had the chance to get to know the originators and Primarchs of the Emperor’s Legions I really couldn’t wait to get my hands on the book. What unfurls within is a series of four short stories written by some of the top talent at Black Library, Each has their own benefits and strengths and also their weaknesses within the text.

Whilst I did enjoy the tales, I wanted something that separated these venerable warriors from the masses that were to follow in their name, I wanted tales of inspirational history that demonstrated why the Space Marines would each lay down their lives in the battle for the Emperor and of course I wanted something that really grabbed firmly from start to finish without giving you chance to breath.

What I got did do this to a certain degree but in my opinion I feel that the writers had to hold something back purely for the fact that these warriors were the originators, and whilst I felt that they did fulfil their brief I think that for me the fear of filling these boots of the Astates “God” were mighty big to fill.

All in it was a solid read and I did enjoy it despite my niggles. But for me, the best tale was saga of Alpharius and Omegon. Great stuff.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Audio Book Unabridged: Horus Heresy: A Thousand Sons - Graham McNeill

Release Date: 27/03/12

SYNOPSIS:

Censured at the Council of Nikea for his flagrant use of sorcery, Magnus the Red and his Thousand Sons Legion retreat to their homeworld of Prospero to continue their use of the arcane arts in secret. But when the ill-fated primarch forsees the treachery of Warmaster Horus and warns the Emperor with the very powers he was forbidden to use, the Master of Mankind dispatches fellow primarch Leman Russ to attack Prospero itself. But Magnus has seen more than the betrayal of Horus and the witnessed revelations will change the fate of his fallen Legion, and its primarch, forever.

REVIEW:

Alongside Dan Abnett, Graham McNeill is perhaps one of the other heavy hitters for the Black Library’s 40K line. The writing is not only crisp but the action is heavy with blood, guts and gore that will keep the reader hooked within especially as its Marine Vs. Marine in this none stop action thriller set during the Horus Heresy.

It’s dark, the audio medium works well and when you add that you’re getting the full force of the authors writing talent as none of the text is slashed then you know that you’re in for something special. Great stuff all in and a real treat for all.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Audio Book Unabridged: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy: Prospero Burns - Dan Abnett

Release Date: 27/03/12

SYNOPSIS:

The Emperor is enraged. Primarch Magnus the Red of the Thousand Sons Legion has made a terrible mistake that endangers the very safety of Terra. With no other choice, the Emperor charges Leman Russ, Primarch of the Space Wolves, with the apprehension of his brother from the Thousand Sons home world of Prospero. This planet of sorcerers will not be easy to overcome, but Russ and his Space Wolves are not easily deterred. With wrath in his heart, Russ is determined to bring Magnus to justice and bring about the fall of Prospero.

REVIEW:

I love an audio book but when you normally get them, they story has been slashed to the nuts and bolts to keep it down to a certain length and as such a lot of the detail is usually missing. So I was very happy when I learned that the Black Library was bringing some of the Horus Heresy titles to the fore to allow readers to feel the full force of battles both on the field as well as within the minds of men without having to cut anything out.

As with the other Black Library audio books it is fun, it has the full on flavour of the Dark Future universe and of course the characters within will remain within the readers mind for quite some time to come. (In fact I dare you to read any Horus Heresy titles after listening and not place the vocals to the characters.) Add to this a foreboding sense throughout due to background atmospheric music alongside cracking talent reading the tale and you know that its going to be a gem. Great stuff.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Horus Heresy 19: Know No Fear - Dan Abnett

Release Date: 05/03/12

SYNOPSIS:

Unaware of the wider Heresy and following the Warmaster’s increasingly cryptic orders, Roboute Guilliman returns to Ultramar to muster his Legion for war against the orks massing in the Veridian system. Without warning, their supposed allies in the Word Bearers Legion launch a devastating invasion of Calth, scattering the Ultramarines fleet and slaughtering all who stand in their way. This confirms the worst scenario Guilliman can imagine – Lorgar means to settle their bitter rivalry once and for all. As the traitors summon foul daemonic hosts and all the forces of Chaos, the Ultramarines are drawn into a grim and deadly struggle in which neither side can prevail.

REVIEW:

If there’s one author that is a constant as well as a trend setter then its Dan Abnett, his imagination is rich, the worlds within vying for attention and I suspect that the devils on his shoulder must be fighting it out in strategic battles just to get their chance to whisper in his ear. (Although I suspect that he probably has a set of Heavily Armoured Angels with bolters dug in there. LOL)

This, the 19th book in the Heresy series is one that delivers what fans want, heavy combat, intrigue and of course blends it all together with blood, heroism and strategy. It’s hard hitting, the combat bloody and when all hope seems lost a pyrrhic victory is won. It gets the heart beating and of course I suspect that a certain author is perhaps responsible for quite a few Aquila tattoos. Great fun all in and one of my favourite heresy titles to date.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy 18: Deliverance Lost - Gav Thorpe

Release Date: 02/01/12

SYNOPSIS:

As the Horus Heresy divides the Imperium, Corax and his few remaining Raven Guard escape the massacre at Isstvan V. Tending to their wounds, the bloodied Space Marines endeavour to replenish their numbers and return to the fray, taking the fight to the traitor Warmaster. Distraught at the crippling blow dealt to his Legion, Corax returns to Terra to seek the aid of his father – the Emperor of Mankind. Granted access to ancient secrets, Corax begins to rebuild the Raven Guard, planning his revenge against his treacherous brother primarchs. But not all his remaining warriors are who they appear to be… the mysterious Alpha Legion have infiltrated the survivors and plan to destroy the Raven Guard before they can rebuild and threaten Horus’s plans.

REVIEW:

Whilst I’ve been into the Horus Heresy for quite some time this one in the series, which whilst OK, didn’t quite hit the same spot or level that quite a few of the others did for me as personally I felt that Gav tried to cram a little too much into the title and whilst succeeding didn’t get it in enough detail to make it convincing enough for myself as a reader. It does have some decent characters, it has some acceptable prose, but considering it’s during a pivotal point in mankind’s civil war then it should have perhaps split the plot between two titles to allow them to be explored fully rather than rushing through to get to the meat of the tale.

All in, it is a middle of the road title for the series which in my opinion is a great shame as the rich and vivid tapestry really has all the elements available to create something a little special with enough freedom for the authors to move within the established structure.

SCIENCE FICTION AUDIO BOOK REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy: Galaxy in Flames - Ben Counter, read by Martyn Ellis

Release Date: 02/01/12

SYNOPSIS:

Having recovered from his grievous injuries, Warmaster Horus leads the triumphant Imperial forces against the rebel world of Isstvan III. Though the rebels are swiftly crushed, Horus’s treachery is finally revealed when the planet is razed by virus bombs and Space Marines turn on their battle-brothers in the most bitter struggle imaginable. Ben Counter brings the opening trilogy of this bestselling series to explosive life as the Horus Heresy begins!

REVIEW:

We’re always looking for ways to save not only time but to have a kickass way of doing so. So when we have the opportunity to enjoy an audio book it’s a real joy to be able to sit back and listen to it, whether its to help you get relax or whether its to help use up journey time.

What this five CD (yes that’s right I said five CD’s) audio book does is bring the Horus Heresy to life from the pages of the full length novel published originally in 2006 and gives you a story that will live within the imagination for quite some time to come. Add to this the sheer value for money aspect to this (£20) and the expert reading by Martyn Ellis (who was Tuck in Warner Brothers New Adventure of Robin Hood) and it’s a sheer joy to listen to. Cracking fun for all.

SCIENCE FICTON REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy 17: The Outcast Dead - Graham McNeill

Release Date: 10/11/11

SYNOPSIS:

The galaxy is burning. The Emperor’s loyal primarchs prepare to do battle with Warmaster Horus and his turncoat Legions on the black sand of Isstvan. Such dark times herald new and yet more terrible things still to come, and when Astropath Kai Zulane unwittingly learns a secret that threatens to tip the balance of the war, he is forced to flee for his life. Alongside a mysterious band of renegades, he plunges into the deadly underworld of Terra itself, hunted like a criminal by those he once trusted. In the face of betrayal, Kai must decide where his own loyalties lie and whether some truths should be buried forever.

REVIEW:

I’m a fan of Graham’s writing, I like the dark gritty style of hard combat, mental conundrums for the lead characters and the struggle of never knowing which way to turn, which is even harder during the time of the Horus Heresy where brother fights brother and the outcome could go either way.

As usual with Graham, its cleverly plotted, the characters have doubts and of course each choice could mean the difference between salvation and a descent into madness. Add to this, great prose, characters that you want to be around and of course cracking pace which leaves you tired yet satisfied.

SCIENCE FICTION AUDIO BOOK: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy: False Gods - Graham McNeill, Read by Martin Ellis

Release Date: 07/07/11

SYNOPSIS:

The Great Crusade that has taken humanity into the stars continues. The Emperor of mankind has handed the reins of command to his favoured son, the Warmaster Horus. Yet all is not well in the armies of the Imperium. Horus is still battling against the jealousy and resentment of his brother primarchs and, when he is injured in combat on the planet Davin, he must also battle his inner daemon. With all the temptations that Chaos has to offer, can the weakened Horus resist? This abridged audio continues the epic tale of the Horus Heresy. The fate of the galaxy now rests in the simple choice of one man; loyalty or heresy?

REVIEW:

Whilst the cracking novel by Graham McNeil originally came out in 2006 its taken a while for the turning point of the Heresy to find its way to audio book. Whilst many of the titles out there are condensed versions of the original text, here, the Black Library has done their best to preserve the book in its original form taking a staggering 5 CD’s to bring this epic to life.

Whilst its going to take a few days to get through, its one that will help you get the most from this adventure. Add to this, not just the writing talent of award winner Graham McNeill but the vocal talents of Martin Ellis. All in a wonderful addition to the series and one that really will help get people into the books. Finally look at the value for money (5 Audio Book CD’s for £20) and wow, its unbelievable.

SCIENCE FICTION REVIEW: Warhammer 40K: Horus Heresy: Age of Darkness - Ed. Christian Dunn

Release Date: 12/05/11

SYNOPSIS:

After the betrayal at Isstvan, Horus begins his campaign against the Emperor, a galaxy-wide war that can lead only to Terra. But the road to the final confrontation between father and son is a long one - seven years filled with secrecy and silence, plans and foundations being formed across distant stars. An unknown history is about to be unveiled as light is shed on the darkest years of the Horus Heresy, and revelations will surface that will shake the Imperium to its very foundation...Age of Darkness enters a new chapter of the epic Horus Heresy story, and features stories from some of the Black Library's best-known authors, including Dan Abnett, Graham McNeill, James Swallow and Aaron-Dembski Bowden.

REVIEW:

There are times when as a reader I want a title that I can dip into as and when I feel the need or I get a break from the everyday world. Add to this the chance to journey amongst the stars with great companions and a wide selection of authors and you pretty much have a book that will entertain as well as please. What Christian has brought together in this title is a whole selection of Horus Heresy side stories and additions that not only delve into some of the smaller aspects of the overall struggle but also add extra flavour and depths that would otherwise have been missed by so many. All in this is a great title and one that will also allow readers to pay out for one book to decide if they feel like indulging in the overall arc of the most infamous civil war of the 40th Century.

REVIEW:

In a world full of chaos where at times, it feels that every spare second is accounted and that you have next to no free time then you know it’s time to get an audio book. After all you can always squeeze it in on the drive to work, during your lunch hour or even whilst taking public transport or household chores. It’s a great way to enjoy a title without having to stay still. Of all the audio books out there, the ones that tend to give me the most pleasure are the ones from the Black Library as they’ve hired top vocal talent, have dark gritty tales and when blended with background music and sound effects they take me away to another place.

This title, a story by James Swallow, takes us back to the Horus Heresy where Garro is seeking a select few chosen ones for a mission that even he has no idea about the importance. It’s beautifully told, the combat stunning and with a great plot line the reader will be highly entertained. All in a lot of fun for me and something that clearly demonstrates that the medium is often underused.
