Entertainment Weekly - 10/21/16

The newest issue of Entertainment Weekly (Oct. 21) has a Doctor Strange cover plus an article on the 30 Most Power Superheroes. Usually, lists like this where Aquaman and mainstream pop culture meet are a source of frustration. Aquaman would normally A)be left out entirely, or B)mentioned, but mocked.

Luckily times have changed, so we get the Sea King placing at #30 on the list, complete with decent(ish) bio and cool pic. I'm not going to quibble about just where he places on the list, since it's meaningless; I'm just glad he's here!

Aquaman’s Spanish Vacation

My pal Dan Greenfield (editor of 13thDimension.com, for which I write a movie review column) recently took a trip to Spain, and the King of the Seven Seas went along for the ride! Check out this superhero team-up over at 13thDimension.com!

Training T-Shirt

My pal, F.O.A.M. member, and author Steve Spatucci found this insulting t-shirt design available for sale...in Ocean City, NJ no less! I guess we can appreciate the Sea King being mentioned at all, but still.

Thanks(?) Steve!

DC Summer Reading

Author, world traveler, and F.O.A.M.er Marc Tyler Nobleman sent in this imaginative sign promoting a library's summer reading program. As MTN points out, you see the Superman, Batman, and Flash chest emblems all the time, it's rarer to see Aquaman's "A" used for a similar purpose. Nice job Barbara Gordon!

Aquaman in the Library

F.O.A.M.er Ashton Burge (co-composer of the Fire and Water Podcast theme song) is an Information Services Supervisor in his civilian identity, and this year the Summer Reading Program is superhero themed. It was up to Ashton to put together the display, and as you can see he made sure Aquaman was well represented! Outrageous!

Bonus: Ashton mentioned that a kid in the program came up to him and told him that Aquaman was his favorite hero. Mission Accomplished, thanks Ashton!

Aquaman Street Art

sgsg
Newest F.O.A.M.er Hugo Duvergey sent this pic in, taken while he was on vacation in San Jose, Costa Rica--genuine Aquaman street art! Outrageous, or should I say, indignante!

Thanks Hugo, and welcome to F.O.A.M.!

History Friends

sg
This clever, delightful shirt was sent in by F.O.A.M.er Barry Fackler who described it as "featuring two of of childhood heroes, Aquaman and Jacques Cousteau."

I would totally watch this if it was a show: Cousteau, Shakespeare, Da Vinci, Lincoln, and Earheart fighting for justice! Thanks Barry!

The Big Bang Theory - 10/6/14

sg
Prof. Leonard Hofstadter reads Aquaman and The Others! Good thing, maybe this high profile plug will help boost sales a bit.

The Fisherman in "Ernest Goes To Camp"

sg
F.O.A.M.er Chris Franklin, who never seems to tire of exposing his children to cinematic flotsam, discovered a curious cameo during a scene in 1987's Ernest Goes To Camp.

Look closely, and you'll see one of the kids is reading a copy of Who's Who #8, where you can plainly see the listings for the Golden Age Flash and one of Aquaman's Rogues Gallery, The Fisherman!
 sgsg
Chris also points out that, by 1987, this issue of Who's Who was two years old, so where the heck did it come from? That's a good question, but it takes away from the larger one, which is why was Chris showing his kids Ernest Goes To Camp?

Aquaman in Entertainment Weekly

sg
This jab at Aquaman ran on the "Bullseye" page of the August 22nd edition of Entertainment Weekly. An "Aquaman is lame" joke, really? What's next, making fun of Star Wars fans for being nerds? Really keeping it fresh over there, fellas. Besides, didn't you ever read my Aquaman Delcaration of Principles, which was printed in your very own magazine, back in 2005?

Aquaman in The Lego Movie

sg
We're all excited about Aquaman's upcoming appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of the Planet of the Justice of course, but did you know it's not the Sea King's first appearance on the silver screen? Eagle-eyed F.O.A.M.er Joseph Angsten managed to spot and capture Aquaman's cameo in first big Chris Pratt hit of 2014, The Lego Movie!

It's near the very end of the film, during the big celebration. All of the DC heroes who had appeared earlier--Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, and Green Lantern (who, for once, is the butt of all the jokes)--are there, but in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance, so is Aquaman:
sgsg
I saw The Lego Movie in the theaters, and while I enjoyed it quite a bit, I was a little disappointed that they managed to work in so many DC heroes but no Aquaman. I'm happy to find out I was wrong! Maybe this is a hint as to what's awaiting us in the inevitable sequel?

You can watch the scene here on YouTube, cued to the exact moment Aquaman shows up. Nice job Joseph!

Working Daze - 4/22/14

sg
Aquaman appears in the Funny Papers a lot, usually (but not always) the butt of the joke. Here (from the 4/22 edition of Working Daze), he's getting dissed on, but he is walking away with the girl, so...

Writer John Zakour was kind enough to write a story (and a great one!) for my book Hey Kids, Comics!: True-Life Tales From The Spinner Rack, so I guess I'll forgive him for suggesting going from Hulk to Aquaman is "downsizing."

Bloc-Quaman

sgsg
F.O.A.M.er Wil Radcliffe caught this quick reference to Aquaman in tomorrow night's all-Lego episode of The Simpsons. Hanging in The Android's Dungeon is this poster for a Lego-ized Aquaman known as...Bloc-Quaman!

It goes by super-fast, but here's a closer look:
sg
I'd read that comic. Thanks Wil!

Ancient Doguu or Black Manta?

sg
Was/is Black Manta real? Check out this alarming evidence involving undersea rock formations, possible alien visitors, and an ancient statue that just happens to bear a striking resemblance to a certain helmeted bad guy!
