Entertainment Weekly - 10/21/16

The newest issue of Entertainment Weekly (Oct. 21) has a Doctor Strange cover plus an article on the 30 Most Power Superheroes. Usually, lists like this where Aquaman and mainstream pop culture meet are a source of frustration. Aquaman would normally A)be left out entirely, or B)mentioned, but mocked.

Luckily times have changed, so we get the Sea King placing at #30 on the list, complete with decent(ish) bio and cool pic. I'm not going to quibble about just where he places on the list, since it's meaningless; I'm just glad he's here!

Aquaman in Entertainment Weekly

sg
This jab at Aquaman ran on the "Bullseye" page of the August 22nd edition of Entertainment Weekly. An "Aquaman is lame" joke, really? What's next, making fun of Star Wars fans for being nerds? Really keeping it fresh over there, fellas. Besides, didn't you ever read my Aquaman Delcaration of Principles, which was printed in your very own magazine, back in 2005?

Megozine #1

sgsg
This is the cover to Megozine #1, the official magazine for the all-encompassing Mego Musuem website, which has been the spot for Mego love on the web for almost as long as the internet has existed.

For it's inaugural outing, the Megozine folks are using their army of dolls (sorry, "action figures") to recreate the cover to the classic Superman vs. Muhammad Ali treasury edition:
sgsg
As you can see, Aquaman didn't get a very good seat for the Fight of the Century. But the MegoMuseum was a lot kinder, putting him at ringside, next to who is arguably the most famous Mego ever, Spider-Man! Only fitting, considering the Sea King was one of the original World's Greatest Super-Heroes. I wonder how much money Arthur had on the fight, and whom did he bet on?

You can order a copy of Megozine here. And tell them The Aquaman Shrine sent ya!

Super Friends in The Monster Times

sg
This gem of an article about the nascent Super Friends TV show comes from a 1973 edition of The Monster Times. Apparently the writer was none-too-pleased with the show, as the write-up shows. Click the image to embiggen and see other snarky comments about the show!

I found this on the blog of Big Time Comics Pro Al Bigley, who is always managing to undercover cool stuff and posts it for all of us to enjoy. Thanks Al!

"Aquaman looks like a foppish Robert Redford"?

Entertainment Weekly, 7/13/2012

sg
This article about DC's relative inability to get movies made (at least, compared to Marvel) is running in this week's Entertainment Weekly. As you can see, Aquaman is both pictured and mentioned!

Thanks to F.O.A.M.er Marc Tyler Nobleman for the tip!

Aquaman Special Review

sg
I found this preview of the 1988 Aquaman Special in an old (I guess they all are, now) issue of Amazing Heroes.

It's written by F.O.A.M.er and comics writer/editor Andy Mangels, and I can only guess that this was written after a long string of tedious comic book recaps Andy had to get done, because it barely mentions the book at all and spirals off into its own crazy, stream-of-consciousness direction. End it with "It's called The Aquaman Special" and call it a day.

Wizard "Zero Hour" Preview - 1994

sg
F.O.A.M.er and Fire and Water Podcast co-host The Irredeemable Shag sent me this Aquaman-centric page from an old issue of Wizard, covering DC's "Zero Hour" crossover.

You can click the image to embiggen, though I suggest you don't, since this thing is so hideous to look at. "Zero Hour" took place in 1994, and that's just about when Adobe Photoshop really became widely available to most graphic designers. I know from experience that people were in love with all the bells and whistles the program could deliver; if one splashy tone was good, five must be better! Bevel that type, and emboss it while you're at it! Hence, you got stuff like this.

Thanks, Shag...I think.

Aquaman Mini-Series Preview

sg
sg
I've been digging through issues of the old comics magazine Amazing Heroes, which did a yearly Preview Issue, talking up all the new releases.

In the 1985 preview, they ran this article on the upcoming Aquaman mini-series by Neal Pozner and Craig Hamilton. If you look at the beginning of the listing, it says the series it "concludes with the 50th issue." Oh, if only!

TV Guide - August 2011

sg
Aquaman gets a shout-out via an interview with Brave and the Bold voice actor John DiMaggio, which appeared in an August edition of TV Guide. Say it with me...Outrageous!

EW on Justice League #1

sg
Entertainment Weekly reviews Justice League #1, and even mentions Aquaman (in the context of, "he isn't here")!

Wired Magazine - Sept. 2011

sg
The newest issue of Wired features an interview with Jim Lee about DC's New 52 (which debuts in comic shops tonight!), accompanied by some illustrations of the new looks for Superman, Flash, and Aquaman!

And look who Wired chose to put on the table of contents to represent the piece:
sg

Here's the page itself, click on the graphic to see a readable version:
sg
I had heard about this article, but hadn't had the chance to find a copy of the magazine. But now the Shrine doesn't have to, thanks to F.O.A.M.er Craig McGinnes, who sent in all three pages! Thanks Craig!

"Aquaman: The Underdog of Superheroes"

sg
This guest column extolling the virtues of Aquaman actually ran in a newspaper, The Lerner Times, on October 9, 2003 and was written by our newest F.O.A.M. member, John Wroblewski!

John is a die-hard Aquaman fan, writing several pieces about him for his blog Johngy's Beat, which you can find here. John wrote in to the Shrine asking to become a member of F.O.A.M., and one click revealed he is a true friend to the Sea King!

Thanks John, and welcome to F.O.A.M.!

Aquaman vs. Ozymandias!

sg
sg
Yet another piece of Aqua-coolness courtesy the SDCC-centric issue of The Hollywood Reporter! Check out Aquaman as he lounges with six beautiful TV actresses, and prepares for battle against Ozymandias, to (presumably) decide who gets to take these ladies out for some drinks, and perhaps a midnight swim!

What can you say? LLCoolA: Ladies Love Cool Aquaman!

Hollywood Reporter Aquaman #1 Sneak Preview

sg
Hollywood Reporter magazine has just published a special issue devoted entirely to this year's San Diego Comic Con. Our newest F.O.A.M. member, Kim August, sent the Shrine an email to say that one article features a sneak preview of Aquaman #1!

Well, none of the bookstores (fewer every day) in my area carry HR; Shrine Correspondent Joe Slab's diligent search also proved fruitless. I tried finding it online; but its not available for purchase as a download, and I didn't feel like waiting who knows how long to get it by snail mail. I pretty much gave up. Then I thought, maybe someone on eBay...?

I checked, and indeed some intrepid and speedy seller was offering the issue for sale. Not only that, but they had high-res shots from inside the mag, including the spread featuring Aquaman! So here it is--click to embiggen, and enjoy!

Thanks Kim, and welcome to F.O.A.M.!

Channel Chatter - 1972

sg
I found this little mention of the upcoming Super Friends show in an old newspaper. What's with spelling Wonder Woman as Wonderwoman? That just looks weird.

Also--it didn't really occur to me as a kid, but I guess the show did teach "useful social lessons". I learned quite a bit from that show, the least of which was I was woefully inept at making craft-y stuff out of household items.

Saturday Morning Line-Up - 10/20/67

sg
I recently signed up for an account at NewspaperArchive.com, a really cool, invaluable resource for finding obscure references in hundreds of years' worth of newspapers.

You can search by subject, so of course "Aquaman" was one of the first things I plugged in. I got a ton of hits, but very few of them are anything other than TV listings. I waded through a couple of them, and was really struck by this one, from the 10/20/67 edition of the Maryland News: check out that Saturday morning line-up!

In addition to the Filmation Superman and Aquaman shows, you've got Spider-Man, Space Ghost, Atom Ant, The Beatles, King Kong, Jonny Quest, George of the Jungle, and more--all back-to-back-to-back!

This gave me warm, fuzzy memories of the similarly awesome line-up one of my local Philly stations, Channel 48, had going when I was a kid. Man, that was back when the phrase "Saturday Morning" really meant something...

Anti-Violence - 1973

sg
F.O.A.M.er Brian Heiler is like a one-man LexisNexis--he sends me all sorts of really odd bits of flotsam from newspapers and magazines that feature Aquaman in some way, the kind of stuff you would think be lost to the mists of time. This little bit is a classic example of that.

I know when I was growing up, the Aquaman show inspired me to perpetrate all kinds of violence, especially on monstrous sea creatures, alien invaders, and oddly-domed undersea criminals
. Great Neptune, won't somebody think of the children?!?

I looooove seeing this stuff, thanks Brian!

Wizard #185 - 2007

sg
Ever since joining F.O.A.M., member Hart Rieckhof has been a fountain of material for the Shrine, finding all kinds of stuff that I didn't know existed.

Case in point, this fun Wizard article about the Super Friends and its modern parallel, Justice:
sg

You can click the image to see a bigger, readable shot of the whole two pages, but here's a close-up of the Aquaman profile:

sg
With Alex Ross being such a huge fan of Aquaman, I hope that maybe if/when the Sea King gets a solo feature again, DC taps Ross to do a cover once in a while.

Neat article, thanks Hart!

TV Guide SDCC Edition - 2010

sg
Apparently TV Guide did a special San Diego Comic Con edition (wow, have things changed...) and it was chockablock with Aquaman appearances and/or references. F.O.A.M.er Brent Almond was nice enough to scan in all the pertinent pages and send them into the Shrine. Thanks Brent!

First up is what you see above, that famous group shot from the "Justice" episode of Smallville, but there was a lot more Aqua-content, like:
sg
sg

There was also a centerfold Young Justice poster, and some more Smallville stuff. But was most exciting to me was this mini-profile of actor Kunal Nayyar, one of the cast members of The Big Bang Theory:
sg

"Aquaman--he needs more fans." I totally agree, Mr. Nayyar!

Wow, what a fun issue, and of course its great to see Aquaman in it so much. Between all this media attention and his resurrection in Brightest Day, it seems like Aquaman is poised to make a big, er, splash in the next decade (fingers crossed).

Great stuff, thanks Brent!
