John Barrowman, Aquaman Fan

Actor John Barrowman (Arrow, Tochwood), shows off...just how much of an Aquaman fan he is at the 2014 NC Comic Con, held last weekend.

I kinda want to see a close up of those shorts, and I also kinda don't.

AquaFamous: Jack Guzman

F.O.A.M.er Jonathan Schalembier found this interesting piece of video. We'll let him explain it:

"Not sure if this counts as an 'Aquafamous' quote, but I was watching some videos from the most recent Power Rangers Morphicon. The actor who played the Black Wild Force Power Ranger, Jack Guzman, expressed his love for Aquaman, just after the 9:40 mark. It was part of a discussion about if children look at race as a deciding factor when choosing their heroes. Thought you might want to check it out!"

We do indeed! Thanks Jonathan!

AquaFamous: Jillian Michaels

sg
Here's a really out-of-left-field Aquaman reference, courtesy our newest F.O.A.M. member Steve McCarty, who posted this on the Shrine's Facebook page.

Apparently the Famous Footwear chain has an in-house magazine (who knew?) and in the Spring 2011 issue there's an interview with fitness guru Jillian Michaels, including a questionnaire. Check out the last answer:
sg
Jillian Michaels is an Aquaman fan, who knew? And what are Aquaman socks? I've never seen any such thing!

I love weirdo references like this! Thanks Steve, and welcome to F.O.A.M.!

This Week With Larry Miller

F.O.A.M. member Chuck Coletta alerted me to this Aqua-riffic clip from comedian/actor Larry Miller's podcast This Week With Larry Miller, where he discusses some of his favorite childhood comic books:

...wow, how cool is that? I had no idea!

Its from the 2/9/11 episode, "The Greatest Story Never Told" and features more of Mr. Miller's reminisces about comics, and you even get to hear him recite the Green Lantern Oath!

I had never heard of the show before, but after listening to one episode I subscribed via iTunes. I only hope he talks comics more in later shows.

Thanks Chuck!

Thanks Joe!

TV Guide SDCC Edition - 2010

sg
Apparently TV Guide did a special San Diego Comic Con edition (wow, have things changed...) and it was chockablock with Aquaman appearances and/or references. F.O.A.M.er Brent Almond was nice enough to scan in all the pertinent pages and send them into the Shrine. Thanks Brent!

First up is what you see above, that famous group shot from the "Justice" episode of Smallville, but there was a lot more Aqua-content, like:

There was also a centerfold Young Justice poster, and some more Smallville stuff. But was most exciting to me was this mini-profile of actor Kunal Nayyar, one of the cast members of The Big Bang Theory:
sg

"Aquaman--he needs more fans." I totally agree, Mr. Nayyar!

Wow, what a fun issue, and of course its great to see Aquaman in it so much. Between all this media attention and his resurrection in Brightest Day, it seems like Aquaman is poised to make a big, er, splash in the next decade (fingers crossed).

Great stuff, thanks Brent!

AquaFamous: Matt Bomer

sgIt's been a long time since I've posted another installment of AquaFamous, which is where a celebrity of some kind professes an admiration for the Sea King.

But I just got sent a link to an MTV interview with actor Matt Bomer (who stars on the USA show White Collar) who talks about how he screentested for director Brett Ratner when he was attached to do the Superman revamp.

In the clip, he talks about how much of a superhero fan he is. When asked, he rattles off some of his favorites...Spider-Man, The Flash...and Aquaman!

This clip was sent to me by our newest F.O.A.M. member Jerome Ty, who also sent some other stuff that will shop here eventually. Thanks Jerome, and welcome to F.O.A.M.!

AquaFamous!

sg

sgHappy New Year everyone!

To kick off the new year, I thought I'd roll out a new ongoing feature here on the Shrine, called "AquaFamous." This feature will consist of quotes from famous people (from any walk of life) declaring their love of the King of the Seven Seas.

I got the idea when my pal and fellow Kubert School alum Sean Tiffany sent me this quote from professional Cool Guy Samuel L. Jackson while he was promoting The Spirit: "
My favorite characters though were the ones with superpowers. Everyone wanted to be fast like the Flash or strong like Superman, me I wanted to be Aquaman because I swam a lot."

Of all the interviews I have read with with Jackson, and amid all the comic book references he has dropped in those interviews, I've never heard him talk about Aquaman, let alone wanting to be Aquaman as a kid. Is he trying to lay claim to play Black Manta in any Aquaman movie that might get made?

sgMy contribution to this first installment is something I previously posted, from an interview in Wizard with the actor/rapper Common:

"I'm definitely a fan of superheroes. I'd love to play Superman, to be honest. To have a black Superman would be beautiful. I used to watch superheroes on TV more than read them. I used to check out the Justice League [on Super Friends]. Some of my favorites were, like, Aquaman.

[Wizard: Really? Aquaman?]

"Well, I'm a Pisces, you know. I like the water."

Like The Aquaman Timeline, "AquaFamous" will be an ongoing feature here on the Shrine, updated any time someone sends in a genuine quote from a famous person talking Aquaman. So if you find a quote not represented here, please email me and let me know!
