Watermelon

In the September 2008 issue of Saveur , a magazine dedicated to authentic cuisines where ever they can be found, there's an article that has a very local flavor, if you will, to me. The title is Why We Love Watermelon and thus it'll come as no surprise that the writer, Dana Bowen, chose to explore the topic of Watermelon. Normally I'd skip over a topic as sweet as this because I have a nasty allergy to many fruits. This is known as Oral allergy syndrome (OAS) and while it's not usually dangerous, as are some food allergies, it is quite annoying. OAS is apparently the body misinterpreting fruit as pollen and it causes your mouth to burn and itch---and I can assure you, it itches A LOT! But to get back to my point---don't you hate it when a writer is constantly going off on tangents? oops---this article is based right here in the RTP area of North Carolina. Bowen starts off the article by mentioning the State Farmers Market in Raleigh, NC and quickly establishes t

Saveur

My new subscription to Saveur magazine started up while I was off in SC on Xmas vacation. It started up in the typical fashion for magazines. They sent me the past two issues of the magazine (November & December) along with the current issue so now the subscription is already a quarter way through. In my case, I like it since I'd not seen these two issues but had I already bought them on a news stand or some-such I'd have been rather annoyed. I think it's rather silly of magazines to pull that trick so often. There was a recipe for a drink in this issue that, Chris, a former girlfriend of mine, probably would have liked. It's called a Caipirinha--which I'd never heard of before--and it contains rum, lime, sugar, and cachaca . This drink is considered to be the national drink of Brazil and sounds quite good. I don't know if I'd be able to get cachaca locally though. It's similar to rum but made only in Brazil The cover of the December issue is quite

magazine shopping

When I go shopping price is usually the component of the experience that I find most important. That's actually how I first found Saveur Magazine . (The pic to the left is a screen shot of what the magazine currently costs to subscribe to) You see I wanted to get a magazine about food and cooking about two years ago and at that time Saveur was doing a push for more subscribers. At a site I used to frequent for good online deals, Dealsea.com , there was an offer for a year subscription for 5 bucks. I'd never heard of Saveur but I jumped at the offer. I'm very glad I did too--it's a wonderful magazine. However after my initial subscription ended, the best price I could find on resubscribing was something like $30 a year and I was far too cheap at the time to pay that kinda money. But I've missed reading it and so we come to my magazine shopping trip. After doing a Google search on the magazine name, and coming up with a few sites like that one above, that all had Sav
