Birthday in SC

Image
I went to South Carolina yesterday in the wee hours of the morning 'cause it was my mother's birthday. This is one of the cards she got. No, I didn't send it. And I took a picture of it 'cause I really liked the way it looked. I don't think it was even a "real" birthday card 'cause it just said "happy day" but I thought it was the best one anyway. Just something about that enigmatic cow smile, I guess. On the other hand, hoof?, there are a couple of gifts in the picture---one on the cow and another on the ground. This birthday is a bit of a milestone 'cause it's Mom's 70th. That's getting up there. Given how many aches and pains I have, I don't see much chance of me making it. I doubt I'd be willing to endure that much discomfort (assuming the aches etc keep getting worse, that is). With the exception of one grandchild that is in the military, all the immediate attended. Mom opened her presents just before dinner. Bel...

Birthday Present

Image
A few days ago I blogged about how I don't like receiving presents . And used Lee's rather prettily wrapped present as a prime example. Well, I have to admit she did come through. I had expected that she was giving me an 11x14 framed photograph from her recent journey to Egypt--instead what she gave me was a painting. And she managed to fulfill the criteria that I like in presents. It didn't cost her anything, she knew that I'd like it, and it was easily available. The reason she knew that I'd like it was that I gave it to her for her birthday something like 12 or 13 years ago. And I suspect it's more of a loan than a gift since she likes it as much as I do. I know that the picture below doesn't convey the emotional impact that the real painting does, but at least you can see what it looks like. Click on it to see it a little bigger to get some detail. It's rather bleak and has this aura of starkness that just grabs at my very bones. Weird. I bought it ...

Of birthdays and unexpected visits

Image
As anyone who knows me can attest, I do love to tease. Chris, from what I've gathered so far, is too much of a straight-shooter to tease. However she has warned me several times that she can spoon out at least as much as she gets--and that card I posted yesterday seems to be her warning shot in the teasing game. Inside her words were sweet and caring--quite a contrast to the warning message on the front. *whew* And to make the surprise even nicer she decided to visit me for a few brief hours before zooming off to have a birthday dinner/party with a group of long time friends up in the wilds of Virginia. No boys allowed, dammit. This is Chris preparing to depart for her party. She's wearing shades so you can't see those lovely green eyes. But you can see from her smile that she's already thinking about all the presents she's gonna get. LOL Can you say "Princess"?
