I've been on a diet the past 2 months. My doctor insisted; she was quite adamant, in fact. For the most part I've been behaving myself and as a result I've gone down from 228 to 194. However I still love sweets and now that my weight is approaching normal (I actually need to hit 183 before my BMI is officially normal) I want to add some candy back into my diet. I still want to avoid fructose as much as I can, ie high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) which complicates things a mite since HFCS is in so much candy. So when I noticed that Amazon is running a 20% off coupon code special on YummyEarth lollipops ("YUMET924") I had to pick up a 5 lb bag. YummyEarth is a small company that makes organic candy that is free of corn syrup as well as being gluten-free, GMO-free, egg-free, soy-free, nut-free, casein-free, and dairy-free. *whew* But despite that word "free" occurring so often they're not free-free. Way back when, in the days that I was a little kid, my Mom would buy the generic soda at the Grand Union ---as I recall, the symbol on the cans was a penguin--- and my favorite flavor was the creme soda. Every once in a while I get a jones , if you will, for the taste of that creme soda. Not many companies make that flavor anymore so when I happened to notice Creme Soda from Jones Soda Co in a Food Lion yesterday I couldn't resist buying it. I think I've mentioned on here that I'm often on the frugal side. So my first criteria was price---and the Jones Soda was the same price as the generic, surprisingly enough. As soon as I picked it up I discovered why. Instead of coming in a 12-pack, the cans were packaged in an 8-pack. So in reality the soda cost 50% more per can. On Saturday while picking up some weekend food at Food Lion I purchased a 12-pack of Pepsi Throwback. In case you've missed the 70's Soul Train themed commercials that have been running the past month, Throwback is a temporary formulation of Pepsi (and Mountain Dew) that uses regular sugar instead of HFCS ( high fructose corn syrup ). I've never been a fan of the high government subsidies of corn production so any move towards limiting the use of corn products is good news to me. Manufacturers use HFCS because it's cheap, and it's cheap because the government (ie taxpayers) keeps the price of corn artificially low with subsidies to the farming community, especially large agricultural giants like ConAgra and ADM.
