A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian defenders continue to decisively thwart the Russian enemy's attempts to advance deep into Ukrainian territory, giving him an effective fire effect, exhaustion across the entire frontline.

In total, since the beginning of this day, there have been 153 combat encounters.

Russian zagarbniki made 63 air strikes on the territory of Ukraine, dropping 83 kabi. In addition, the Russians used 448 kamikaze drones to impress and carried out more than 2,900 shells on the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements.

In the Kharkiv direction, Russian forces twice attacked the defensive borders of Ukrainian warriors near vovčans вавka.
In the Kupiansky direction, Russian forces carried out assaults ten times in the areas of Novoosinovoye, Sinkivka and Lozova. Ukrainian defenders repelled six attacks, four more are currently ongoing.
In the Lyman direction during the day Russian zagarbniki 21 times attacked the positions of Ukrainians near Grekivka, Druzhelyubivka, Makiyivka, Nevsky, Novosadovogo, Lozovoí̈, Bilogorivka and in the Serebryans 21komu forest. Currently, four fights are being sharpened.
In the sívers хkomu direction, Russian forces came in the areas of ivano-dar'ívka and pereíznogo. Defenders of the Ukrainian land stopped three attacks of Russians.
In the Kramatorsky direction there is one confrontation near Vasyukivka, and five Russian attacks have already been repelled by Ukrainian defenders.
In the Toretsky direction Russians 16 times attacked the Defense Forces near Nelipivka, Friendship, Toretsky and Iron. Ukrainian warriors have stopped 13 enemy attacks, three attacks continue.
In the Pokrovsky direction since the beginning of this day, the Russian invaders have tried 40 times to break through Ukrainian defense near the settlements of Vozdvizhenko, Hrodivka, Novogrodivka, Marinivka and Krasny Yar. The two clashes are still ongoing.
Russia suffers significant losses - today in this direction 188 Russian occupants were disarmed, 74 of them - irrevocably. Also destroyed a combat armored car and three vehicles. In addition, the BMP and the Russian enemy's car were damaged.
In the Kurakhiv direction, Russia is also active-42 times attacked Ukrainian positions near Ukrainian, Tsukurinogo, Zelannogo First, George, Konstantinivka and Katerinivka. According to the information, four fights are continuing.
In the vremívs ніkomu direction, the Russian zagarbniki carried out offensive actions near vugledara, katerinívka, vodânogo and konstantinívka. During the three clashes, they were defeated, four assaults are still continuing.
In the Orihivsky direction, one unsuccessful Russian attempt to advance in the direction of Ukrainian positions near Robotiny.
In the Pridniprovsky direction Russian zagarbniki tried five times unsuccessfully to push out Ukrainian units from positions.
In other directions, the situation has not changed significantly.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that in Liptsy and Volchansk directions, units of the Sever Group of Forces inflicted losses on formations of the 36th Marine Brigade, 125th and 127th territorial defence brigades near Liptsy, Izbitskoye, and Volchanskye Khutora (Kharkov region).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 70 troops and two motor vehicles.

Units of the Zapad Group of Forces improved the tactical situation and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the 43rd, 44th, 67th mechanised brigades of the AFU, 103rd, 110th, 117th territorial defence brigades, and Azov Special Operations Brigade near Staroverovka, Petropavlovka, Kucherovka, Novoosinovo, Kruglyakovka, Vishnyovoye (Kharkov region), Rozovka, Makeyevka, Nevskoye (Lugansk People's Republic), Torskoye (Donetsk People's Republic), and Serebryansky forestry.

Eight counter-attacks launched by assault detachments of the 14th, 63rd, 116th mechanised brigades, 3rd Assault Brigade of the AFU, and 1st National Guard Brigade were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 600 troops, one Kozak armoured fighting vehicle, 10 pickup trucks as well as UK-made 155-mm Braveheart self-propelled artillery system, a 155-mm FH-70 howitzer, and a 105-mm L-119 howitzer. Three electronic warfare stations and four field ammunition depots were destroyed.

Units of the Yug Group of Forces took more advantageous lines and inflicted losses on formations of the 54th, 93rd mechanised brigades, 143rd, 144th infantry brigades, 5th Assault Brigade, 10th Mountain Assault Brigade, 77th Airmobile Brigade, 95th Air Assault Brigade of the AFU, 114th, 119th, 124th, and 125th territorial defence brigades near Seversk, Verkhnekamenskoye, Zvanovka, Pervomaysky, Nikolayevka, Predtechino, and Kurakhovo (Donetsk People's Republic).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 550 troops, four motor vehicles, one U.S.-made 155-mm M777 howitzer, one UK-made 155-mm FH-70 howitzer, two 152-mm Msta-B howitzers, and three 152-mm D-20 howitzers. One electronic warfare station and two field ammunition depots were destroyed.

Units of the Tsentr Group of Forces continued advancing to the depth of the enemy's defences and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of the 23rd, 24th, 47th, 63rd mechanised brigades, 152nd Infantry Brigade, 68th Jaeger Brigade of the AFU, 122nd Territorial Defence Brigade, and 15th National Guard Brigade near Petrovka, Shcherbinovka, Dzerzhinsk, Nelepovka, Dimitrov, Krasnoarmeysk, Grodovka, Gnatovka, Selidovo, Lesovka, and Ukrainsk (Donetsk People's Republic).

Nine counter-attacks launched by assault detachments of the 30th, 32nd, 100th, 151st mechanised brigades, 25th Airborne Brigade of the AFU, 3rd and 12th national guard brigades, and Lyut Brigade of the National Police of Ukraine were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to more than 530 troops, three armoured personnel carriers, including one U.S.-made M113 armoured personnel carrier, three pickup trucks, one 152-mm Msta-B howitzer, and one 122-mm D-30 howitzer.

Units of the Vostok Group of Forces improved the tactical situation along the front line and inflicted losses on formations of the 61st, 72nd mechanised brigades, 58th Motorised Infantry Brigade, and 118th Territorial Defence Brigade near Dobrovolye, Zolotaya Niva, and Uglesborochnaya railway station (Donetsk People's Republic).

One counter-attack launched by an assault detachment of the 116th Territorial Defence Brigade was repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 115 troops, one tank, one armoured fighting vehicle, four motor vehicles, and one electronic warfare station.

Units of the Dnepr Group of Forces inflicted losses on manpower and hardware clusters of the 128th Mountain Assault Brigade of the AFU, 37th Marine Brigade, 121st, and 123rd territorial defence brigades near Novoaleksandrovka, Gavrilovka, Kamyshany, Pridneprovskoye, Veletenskoye (Kherson region), and Pyatikhatki (Zaporozhye region).

The AFU losses amounted to up to 50 troops, two motor vehicles, one 152-mm Msta-B howitzer, one U.S.-made 105-mm M119 gun, and one field ammunition depot.

Operational-Tactical Aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Groups of Forces delivered strikes at infrastructure of one military airfield, one UAV production workshop, four UAV depots, as well as engaged AFU manpower and hardware clusters in 144 areas.

The Russian Aerospace Forces shot down one MiG-29 aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force.

Air defence units shot down one French-made Hammer guided aerial bomb, 20 Czech-made Vampire MLRS projectiles, and 13 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles.

In total, 646 airplanes, 283 helicopters, 31,622 unmanned aerial vehicles, 579 anti-aircraft missile systems, 18,150 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,454 MLRS combat vehicles, 14,658 field artillery guns and mortars, and 26,127 units of support motor vehicles have been destroyed during the special military operation.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation also reported that the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are repelling an attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine against the territory of the Russian Federation.

In the course of offensive operations, units of the Sever Group of Forces liberated Uspenovka and Borki.

Losses were inflicted on formations of the 22nd, 41st, 115th mechanised brigades, 17th Tank Brigade, 82nd Air Assault Brigade of the AFU, 1st National Guard Brigade, 112th and 129th territorial defence brigades near Lyubimovka, Novoivanovka, Daryino, Nikolo-Daryino, Tolsty Lug, Plekhovo, and Pokrovsky.

Over the past 24 hours, units of the Sever Group of Forces repelled five enemy counter-attacks in the direction of Byakhovo, Bolshaya Obukhovka, Viktorovka, Lyubimovka, and Malaya Loknya.

As a result, the AFU losses amounted to up to 40 troops killed and wounded; four armoured fighting vehicles were destroyed.

Over the past 24 hours, with the support of Army Aviation and artillery fire, three attempts of the enemy to break through the border of the Russian Federation in the direction of Krasnooktyabrsky, Vesyoloye, and Medvezhye were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 50 troops killed and wounded; one tank and three armoured fighting vehicles were destroyed.

The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation continue reconnaissance and search operations in forestry areas to locate and eliminate enemy sabotage groups attempting to get to the depth of the Russian territory.

Air strikes, artillery fire, and actions of the troops inflicted fire damage on manpower and hardware clusters of the 22nd, 42nd, 61st, 115th mechanised brigades, 80th, 82nd, 95th air assault brigades, 112th and 129th territorial defence brigades near Bogdanovka, Guyevo, Daryino, Zeleny Shlyakh, Kruglenkoye, Malaya Loknya, Martynovka, Nikolo-Daryino, Novaya Sorochina, Novoivanovka, Pravda, Russkoye Porechnoye, and Yuzhny.

Operational-Tactical Aviation and Missile Troops delivered strikes at concentration areas and reserves in Sumy region of the 22nd, 41st, 115th mechanised brigades, 82nd Air Assault Brigade, 92nd Assault Brigade of the AFU, 1st National Guard Brigade, 1004th Security and Service Brigade, 101st and 103rd territorial defence brigades near Bondaryovshchina, Belovody, Iskriskovshchina, Mazevka, Novaya Sloboda, Obody, Rechki, Rudnevo, Ryzhovka, Pavlovka, Khoten, Esman, and Yunakovka.

Over the past 24 hours, the AFU losses amounted to more than 350 troops and 13 units of armoured hardware, including two tanks and 11 armoured fighting vehicles, as well as two artillery guns, three mortars, two MLRS launchers, including one U.S.-made M270 MLRS launcher, and eight motor vehicles.

Since the beginning of hostilities in Kursk region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have lost more than 13,800 troops, 115 tanks, 44 infantry fighting vehicles, 91 armoured personnel carriers, 729 armoured fighting vehicles, 439 motor vehicles, 98 artillery guns, 28 MLRS launchers, including seven of HIMARS and six of MLRS made by the USA, eight SAM launchers, two transport-loading vehicles, 26 electronic warfare stations and seven counter-battery radars, two air defence radars, 13 engineering vehicles, including seven counterobstacle vehicles and one UR-77 mine clearing vehicle.

The operation to neutralise the AFU units is in progress.


Russia launched a counteroffensive in Kursk, reclaiming control of at least three settlements and pushing more into contested status. Further west of the primary incursion, Ukrainian forces crossed near Veseloye, expanding their operations in the region. Russian forces have continued their push westward and northward from Pishchane, nearing the Oskil River. This advance is close to spliting Ukrainian forces on the eastern bank into two. Russia has seized control of the settlement of Vodyane, located north of Vuhledar, solidifying their hold on this area. Russian forces have entered and likely moved beyond the settlement of Ukrains'k. Further south, they have secured the northwestern outskirts of Krasnohorivka and have continued to push westward. Northwest of Bakhmut, Russia has pushed forward along the E40 highway, marking the first change in control along this route in several months. Russian forces have gained ground along the canal north of Chasiv Yar. To the south of Chasiv Yar, they have crossed the canal. In Toretsk, Russian forces have advanced from the east and are now approaching the town center. Meanwhile, the capture of positions on Niu-York's northern edge confirms Ukraine's loss of the town's eastern defenses. Russian forces have made minor gains in Hrodivka and in the vicinity of Novohridivka, southeast of Pokrovsk. Russia has secured control of the settlements of Spirne and Vesele, located near Sivers'k.
