A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the Defense Forces are directing efforts to disrupt the execution of Russian invaders' offensive plans and exhaust their combat potential.

Since the beginning of the day, there have been 165 combat clashes, Russian forces launched 2 missiles (6 missiles), 57 air strikes (61 KABs in particular) and 472 kamikaze drones strikes, completing 2,776 shelling positions of Ukrainian troops.

In the Kharkiv direction, Russian terrorists four times stormed the positions of Ukrainian units in the areas of Liptsiv and Vovchansk.
Twenty-four times Russian forces attacked Ukrainian fortifications in the Kupians пkomu direction near synkivka, glushkivka, andriyivka, berestovoye and stelmahivka. At this time, the clashes are ongoing in six locations.
In the Lyman direction a day Russian troops 17 times stormed the positions of Ukrainian defenders in the areas of settlements of Novoyegorivka, Druzhelyubivka, Cherneshchyna, Terniv, Torsky, Dibrova and Makiyivka. Still one attack of the enemy is going on.
In the Siver direction, Ukrainian troops stopped five Russian attempts to improve the tactical position near Verkhnyokamiansky and Spirny. The invaders suffered losses. Another fight, in the area of Spirnogo, is ongoing.
In the kramators Наkomu direction, three attempts of zagarbnikív to advance near grigorívka, temporary yar and andriyivka.
In the Toretsky direction, Russian forces for today nine times stormed in the areas of Toretsk and Nelipivka. The enemy assault and bombarduvalna aviation was actively involved. Continuing combat in two locations - the enemy is pressing, trying to advance in the area of Dry Balka.
Intense Russian attacks of Ukrainian defenders in the Pokrovsky direction. Throughout the day, in general, made 45 assault and offensive actions. The largest activity of Russian occupiers is kept in the regions of Novogrodivka, Hrodivka and Mykhailivka. Nine clashes in the direction are still ongoing.
According to preliminary calculations, today Ukrainian warriors eliminated 92 and wounded 195 invaders. A tank, a cannon and six cars were destroyed. Also damaged nine Russian cars and the artillery system of the zagarbnikív.
A difficult situation in the Kurakhiv direction, at this time of the day there are 41 combat encounters. Russian forces have tried to advance in the areas of settlements of Krasnogorivka, Konstantinivka and Georgiyivka, currently nine fights are underway.
In the Vremivsky direction today, Russian forces stormed the front edge of Ukrainian defense eight times in the direction of Vodyany and Staromayorsk. The battle is on.
Nine Russian attacks were carried out in the Pridniprovsky direction, the opponent was unsuccessful.
The operation of the Defense Forces of Ukraine in the Kursk region is ongoing.

In other directions, there have been no significant changes in the environment.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that from 31 August to 6 September 2024, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation delivered 17 group strikes by long-range high-precision weaponry, including Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles and attack UAVs, to hit enterprises of rocket and space and aviation industry, critical power objects, missile artillery weaponry, POL, and logistics depots.

In addition, strikes were delivered at UAV assembly workshops, uncrewed surface vehicle depots as well as temporary deployment points of AFU, nationalists, and foreign mercenaries.

The AFU 179th Joint Training Centre was struck in Poltava, where under supervision of foreign instructors, electronic warfare specialists and UAV operators, which deliver strikes at civilian objects on the territory of the Russian Federation, were trained.

Units of the Sever Group of Forces continued the operation to eliminate the AFU formations in Kursk region.

Operational-Tactical and Army aviation, unmanned aerial vehicles and artillery delivered strikes at concentration areas of personnel and hardware of six mechanised brigades, one tank brigade, two air assault brigades, one jaeger brigade of the AFU, one marine brigade, and three territorial defence brigades, as well as thwarted attempts to attack and deploy reserves of the enemy.

In Volchansk and Liptsy directions, losses were inflicted on formations of one assault brigade, one jaeger brigade, one air assault brigade of the AFU, and two territorial defence brigades.

The AFU losses in the area of responsibility of the Sever Group of Forces amounted to up to 3,280 troops, nine tanks, 112 armoured fighting vehicles, 135 motor vehicles, 13 MLRS launchers, including four of U.S.-made HIMARS and five of MLRS systems, 34 field artillery guns, and 12 electronic warfare stations and counter-battery radars. Six counter-attacks launched by the enemy's assault detachments were repelled.

Units of the Zapad Group of Forces took more advantageous lines and positions and inflicted losses on formations of five mechanised brigades, one motorised infantry brigade, one assault brigade of the AFU, two territorial defence brigades, one national guard brigade, and the Azov Special Operations Brigade. Fourteen counter-attacks launched by AFU assault detachments were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to more than 3,350 troops, three tanks, 10 armoured fighting vehicles, including two U.S.-made M113 armoured personnel carriers, 42 motor vehicles, 37 field artillery guns, with 21 of them supplied to Ukraine by Western countries.

Moreover, 14 electronic warfare stations and counter-battery radars as well as 45 field ammunition depots were destroyed.

Units of the Yug Group of Forces improved the tactical situation along the front lines and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of seven mechanised brigades, one motorised infantry brigade, one infantry brigade, one airmobile brigade, three assault brigades of the AFU, and two territorial defence brigades. Six counter-attacks launched by AFU assault detachments were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to more than 4,725 troops, two tanks, three armoured fighting vehicles, 29 motor vehicles, and 45 field artillery guns, including 18 made by the NATO countries.

Eleven electronic warfare stations and 20 field ammunition depots were destroyed.

As a result of active and decisive actions, units of the Tsentr Group of Forces liberated Kirovo, Ptichye, Skuchnoye, Karlovka, Zavetnoye, and Zhuravka (Donetsk People's Republic).

Losses were inflicted on formations of five mechanised brigades, one infantry brigade, one jaeger brigade, one air assault brigade of the AFU, one national guard brigade, and one territorial defence brigade. Fifty-three counter-attacks launched by AFU units were repelled.

The AFU losses in this direction amounted to up to 3,515 troops, four tanks, 14 armoured fighting vehicles, and 32 field artillery guns.

Units of the Vostok Group of Forces liberated Prechistovka (Donetsk People's Republic), took more advantageous lines and positions, and inflicted losses on manpower and hardware of two mechanised brigades, one motorised infantry brigade of the AFU, and two territorial defence brigades. Ten counter-attacks launched by the enemy's assault detachments were repelled.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 860 troops, three tanks, two armoured fighting vehicles, 29 motor vehicles, six field artillery guns, including three Polish-made 155-mm Krab self-propelled artillery systems.

Units of the Dnepr Group of Forces inflicted losses on formations of two mechanised brigades, one infantry brigade, one mountain assault brigade of the AFU, one marine brigade, one coastal defence brigade, and three territorial defence brigades.

The AFU losses amounted to up to 485 troops, one armoured fighting vehicle, 31 motor vehicles, and six field artillery guns, including four Western-made 155-mm howitzers.

Moreover, three electronic warfare stations and four field ammunition depots were destroyed.

Over the week, air defence units shot down one MiG-29 aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force, and intercepted seven U.S.-made ATACMS operational-tactical missiles, 20 French-made Hammer guided aerial bombs, 54 U.S.-made HIMARS and Czech-made Vampire MLRS projectiles as well as 367 fixed-wing unmanned aerial vehicles.

Units of the Black Sea Fleet destroyed 11 Ukrainian uncrewed surface vehicles.

Over the past week, 41 Ukrainian servicemen have surrendered on the line of contact.

In total, 642 airplanes and 283 helicopters, 31,068 unmanned aerial vehicles, 578 air defence missile systems, 17,947 tanks and other armoured fighting vehicles, 1,446 combat vehicles equipped with MLRS, 14,158 field artillery guns and mortars, as well as 25,735 units of support motor vehicles have been destroyed during the special military operation.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation also reported that units of the Sever Group of Forces supported Army Aviation and artillery repelled two attacks of the enemy's assault detachments in the direction of Matveyevka and Olgovka. The AFU attacks in the direction of Borki, Komarovka, and Maryevka were thwarted.

As a result of active actions of Russian troops, the AFU losses amounted to up to 30 troops killed and wounded. Moreover, one armoured personnel carrier, two armoured fighting vehicles, and two motor vehicles were destroyed.

Aviation, artillery, and actions of Russian troops inflicted losses on manpower and hardware clusters of the AFU 22nd, 61st, 115th mechanised brigades, 80th, and 82nd air assault brigades, 92nd Assault Brigade, 152nd Jaeger Brigade, and 1004th Security and Service Brigade near Apanasovka, Borki, Vishnyovka, Vnezapnoye, Gordeyevka, Kruglenkoye, Kazachaya Loknya, Kositsa, Leonidovka, Martynovka, Malaya Loknya, Novoivanovka, Novaya Sorochina, and Snagost.

Operational-Tactical Aviation and Missile Troops delivered strikes at concentration areas in Sumy region of reserve manpower and military hardware of the 22nd, 115th mechanised brigades, 80th, 95th air assault brigades, 92nd Assault Brigade of the AFU, the 1st National Guard Brigade, 101st, 103rd, 106th, 107th, and 129th territorial defence brigades near Belopolye, Boromlya, Bruski, Gritsenkovo, Glukhov, Glybnoye, Linovo, Miropolye, Orlovka, Obody, Pisarevka, Sumy, Khoten, Yunakovka, and Yampol.

Over the past 24 hours, the AFU losses amounted to up to 300 troops and 12 units of hardware, including two armoured personnel carriers and 10 armoured fighting vehicles, two artillery guns, one electronic warfare station, and 14 motor vehicles.

Since the beginning of hostilities in Kursk region, the AFU losses amounted to more than 10,400 servicemen, 81 tanks, 41 infantry fighting vehicles, 74 armoured personnel carriers, 599 armoured fighting vehicles, 339 motor vehicles, 76 artillery guns, 24 MLRS launchers, including seven M142 HIMARS and five M270 MLRS systems, eight SAM launchers, two transport-loading vehicles, 19 electronic warfare stations, seven counter-battery radars, two air defence radars, eight units of engineering vehicles, including two counterobstacle vehicles and one UR-77 mine clearing vehicle.

The operation to neutralise the AFU units is in progress.


Russian forces have carried out assaults both northeast and west of Vuhledar. To the west they successfully advanced and captured the settlement of Prechystivka increasing the pressure of Vuhledar after the recent successes around Kostyantynivka. Russian forces have advanced southward from the Pokrovsk salient towards Ukrains'k and Hirnyk securing the settlement of Halytsynivka. Advances continue despite a reduction in pace relative to the rapid advance of recent weeks on in this sector. Ukrainian forces have pushed into the settlement of Pogrebki from both the eastern and western flanks. While the grey zone around Korenovo and Durovka has been reduced by the restoration of Russian control there. Russian troops have taken positions in the forests west of Syn'kivka as well as the southern edge of the settlement. Russian troops have secured new positions southwest of Mar'inka. Russia has taken positions along the canal north of Chasiv Yar and also taken ground southwest of Bakhmut. Newly identified Ukrainian positions have been mapped southeast of the settlement of Makiivka where Russia has recently advanced.
