Event: The Eat X Dignity Relaunch

By Aiman Azri

The official relaunch this month of Sentul's Eat X Dignity, formerly Project B Cafe, marks a fresh step in collaborative efforts between Malaysia's Dignity for Children Foundation and the Berjaya Cares Foundation.

Eat X Dignity is more than a cafe; it's an initiative that provides underprivileged students with the opportunity to learn entrepreneurial skills in the F&B industry. Everyone who works at the cafe is part of the programme, which teaches practical skills that participants can take with them to other restaurants once they graduate.

At the relaunch ceremony, a cooking exhibition by programme participants produced lip-smacking Indonesian satay lilit. Guests also enjoyed nasi kerabu, which is however not part of the cafe's menu. On regular days, Eat X Dignity serves burgers, pasta, noodles, rice, salads and an assortment of fried chicken, ranging from RM7 to RM20 per dish.

All proceeds from the cafe's sales go to the Dignity for Children Foundation to fund further initiatives to help more children.

The young participants of this initiative are encouraged to pursue their own projects. For instance, they can cultivate herbs in a garden, which are then used in the cafe's dishes. Currently, you can discover lemongrass and various kinds of ginger there.

Eat X Dignity is one of the several initiatives run by the Dignity for Children Foundation. Other entrepreneurial efforts include Cut X Dignity (hair salon) and Sew X Dignity (fashion). The foundation also hosts fundraising opportunities for the public to help fund and Empower-a-Child.

To keep up with their projects, visit them on Facebook and their website.

The Cart @ SkyWorld Gallery, Sentul

Inspired by Sentul’s history as a railway hub that became home to thousands of immigrant workers, The Cart is a new pop-up cafe that serves Indian-Western fusion fare in SkyWorld Gallery @ Sentul. It’s an intriguing new collaboration between SkyWorld Development Group and three KL-based F&B brands - creative cuisine purveyors The Bowls, dessert destination Pretty On Plate, and coffee specialists The Mad Alchemy.

The Cart is billed as the first themed cafe operating within a property gallery in Sentul; its ambiance is meant to be serene, in line with SkyWorld's upcoming project launch of Bandar Baru Sentul's SkyMeridien residences.

We were invited to a preview of The Cart before its recent launch, with the house special of a Giant Curry Puff with Cheese serving as a striking introduction to the concept here. This is huge - potentially the biggest curry puff commercially available in KL. It’s both crunchy and chewy, stuffed with a filling mix of chicken and potatoes, plus the savoury novelty of melted cheese that dribbles out irresistibly, making each bite richer.

For main courses,we checked out the Premium Seafood Curry Marinara, served with a choice of Spiced Biryani Rice or Pasta. The curry is mildly spicy, packed with fresh oysters, prawns, and squid. Having this with rice feels like an upmarket variation of biryani, while enjoying it with pasta helps to spotlight the spices and the sauce even more thoroughly.

For dessert, the Pancakes with Bananas, Whipped Cream, Salted Caramel Compote and Cinnamon Ice Cream prove to be a comforting conclusion, with thick pancakes and a very evident flavour of cinnamon in the ice cream. The Cart’s Chai Latte is a refreshing beverage to wash down the meal.

Project B @ Sentul Raya Boulevard

Project B is a new eatery that encapsulates the soul of social enterprise - it marks the first F&B initiative by Malaysia's Dignity For Children foundation, which has worked for the past 12 years to help underprivileged children break the cycle of poverty. At Project B, all proceeds go to the foundation's education & training programmes; read more about Dignity For Children here.

This has the feel of a real neighbourhood space, brightly lit & crowd-friendly, with office workers from nearby strolling in for lunch & residents from elsewhere in Sentul stopping by for dinner. Project B is staffed mainly by older students from Dignity For Children - part of an effort to equip them with work experience & skills. An energetic team, enthusiastic to learn & please.

The focus for food is fried chicken - customers can have fun trying three varieties: The 'Signature Crunch,' two pieces of crispy buttermilk-coated chicken with chicken-salt crinkle fries & coleslaw; the Malaysian hot-&-spicy berempah with flavourful nasi lemak; or the Korean sweet-&-sticky with kimchi jjigae stew (each set is RM15 with a soft drink). Chicken wings are also available, with a buffalo or a Thai-inspired sauce. All coffee is RM6 per cup, whether you have an iced latte or a local 'Kopi B.'

Eat Drink KL is thrilled to be involved in a small way in Dignity For Children's work. Dignity For Children is one of our two co-beneficiaries for the month of June through the Eat Drink KL mobile app. For every transaction made through this app, participating restaurants in this app will contribute at least 20 sen to Dignity For Children & our other co-beneficiary, The Nasi Lemak Project (a youth-driven initiative to help feed the homeless & others in need).

Eat by Jun Chan @ D7 Sentul East

In one elegant, evocative word, Eat issues an impossible-to-ignore imperative to KL's food fans to swarm Sentul's D7 complex.

Eat is only the second F&B outlet to open in D7, more than a full year after Three Little Birds first took flight here. It required months of negotiations for Eat's founders, who include chef Jun & chief operating officer Ming, to secure this small space, with seating limited mainly to two tables in the courtyard so far, but this is a pleasant place to linger, for 20 minutes or two hours.

One of Eat's inspirations is Pret a Manger; you'll find plenty of ready-to-eat offerings here, from salads & egg sandwiches to sweet-&-sour chicken with rice, pan mee pasta & triple-mushroom aglio olio, mostly costing between RM7.50 & RM15. The food's prepared at a Subang central kitchen run by Jun, who also helms the cafeterias at the offices of DiGi & PwC Malaysia.

If it's available, seize the la mian, rich & robust with minced beef, chicken & onsen egg, testifying to Eat's tagline, 'Made With Love'. Props for proportion: There's plenty of meat in this serving, so every strand of the noodles is coated in creamy comfort.

Food that tells a story: Jun found himself missing his gastronomic adventures in Hong Kong, so he whipped up this homage to Mong Kok - pasta with firm-to-the-bite fish balls in tongue-tingling curry sauce. If you're eating here, the food is heated to order.

Eat's food scores not only for flavour but for freshness too, with everything looking & tasting terrific even in the evening.

Like various cafes, Eat vows to support home-grown entrepreneurs like Baked By JM, which supplies lemon meringue tarts.

For a satisfying juice, ask for 'Spongebob' (RM9), a blend of yellow watermelon, orange, mango, pineapple & pear. And while Eat isn't a third-wave coffee bar, it does conveniently offer bottles of 'That Iced Coffee' from That Foodie Place in Mid Valley.
